3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR MAIN SPONSOR We are proud to announce that this year marks our 20th Anniversary sponsoring the Brighton National Speed Trials, the oldest racing event of its kind in the UK. Many things have changed in the past 20 years, but Frosts commitment to this magnificent spectacle certainly hasn't! As car and motorsport enthusiasts ourselves, each year we look forward to welcoming drivers, riders and spectators old and new to this wonderful event on the South Coast. But it's not just our involvement that should be recognised, the commitment, enthusiasm and hard work put in by the Brighton and Hove Motor Club makes the Speed Trials such a popular occasion. Each year they organise a truly wonderful event and we're sure that you will join us in thanking them for their huge efforts. As some of you may already know, this month also marks our 60th year serving the motoring needs of East & West Sussex. Even during the current economic climate, the Frosts group sell over 5000 cars and vans every year to customers all over the UK, repairing 4000 vehicles in our Bodyshop annually and servicing in excess of 50,000 vehicles a year. Thanks to the loyalty of our customers, we remain the number one multi franchise dealer group in the heart of Sussex. This year also saw the return of Freddie Frost, our fun loving Company mascot who has already represented Frosts at our Brighton Racecourse Ladies Day, the South of England Show, Brighton Marathon and our Drive-In movies to name a few. He will also be appearing at our up-and-coming Frosts Fun at the Fireworks on November 5th where Britain's Got Talent winner Jai McDowall and runner up Ronan Parke will be performing in front of a stunning fireworks display. For more information, go to Freddie on Facebook or follow him on You will also see him today at the Speed Trials! To find your nearest Frosts dealership and for the very latest offers, news and comprehensive stock lists, go to our website or speak to a member of our dedicated Frosts team here today. We hope you have a great day and look forward to taking care of all your motoring needs now and in the future.

14 Welcome to the Frosts Brighton National Speed Trials We the VMCC Sprint Section are extremely pleased to be invited back again to provide the Motorcycle entry for this event, probably the most prestigious event in the UK Sprint calendar today. We wish to thank our hosts Brighton and Hove Motor Club and Frosts for their continued support of this event, not forgetting you folks up on the "shelf" and walking around the open paddock, as without you there would be no Speed Trials. I do hope that the weather gods are looking down favourably upon us this year, because after something like seventeen years our luck finally broke last year and we experienced wet track conditions all day. This extremely limited the motorcycles, with some riders only managing to put in a practice runl For one particular rider however it worked completely in his favour, more of that later. I can't promise you good weather, but I can promise you a great selection of motorcycles and three wheelers from the 1920's right up to the current day, with the likes of Malcolm Herwin on his 1928, 500cc DT Douglas through to Andrew Embling on his 2011, 675cc Triumph Street Triple A. In the Consistency Class, Class 1, we have the welcome return of one of the great stalwart supporters of the sprinting fraternity, Frank Clarke. I'm sure Frank will not mind me telling you that he celebrated his eightieth birthday earlier this year; and for me it was a privilege to be invited to go and celebrate the occasion with Frank and his many friends. It truly was a great day. So here is Frank today, eighty years young, still sprinting and putting in some very respectable times with his much loved and used 1936 Brooklands Norton JAP. Well done Frank. When deciding upon who is to get an entry Into the speed trials (a task that I personally don't cherish each year) we have always allowed the first and second place winners from each class, as well as those who make the top 6 run off, a place if they wish to enter. This is so they have the opportunity to defend their position and/or improve upon the previous year's results. This year has been no different. However for one man in particular, Steve Walton, this is going to be a mighty challenge. Last year in appalling conditions Steve took on the challenge and blew everybody else into the seaweed and cleaned up at the prize-giving by taking the Dolphin Trophy for FTD, as well as rather large chunk of the other silverware on offer home with him. To say that he was in a complete state of shock was an understatement. Roger Simmons was one of the first to congratulate Steve on his brilliant ride, a second run with a terminal speed of some 143mph against Rogers second run with a terminal speed of 146mph. Did I say that it was raining at and that Roger was on full wet tyres as well? Not wishing to take anything away at all from Steve's brilliant achievement, but he will have to work extremely hard this year if the track conditions are dry and he wants to keep polishing all that silver, as Roger (who took the course record in 2009 with an absolutely blistering 8.73 second run with a terminal speed of 164mph) wants the Dolphin Trophy back. I wish them both the best for the day and they both, I know, will put on a good show for you the spectators. This year we nearly lost one of our top riders from Class 7, Steve Wood, to the FIA European Drag Racing Finals at Santa Pod. Steve was in two minds as to whether he should enter the Speed Trials as he has been chasing down his times all year and was hoping to push them down even further at the Pod. However the call of the Speed Trials is too strong and Steve decided to turn down a fully prep'd drag racing strip and ride here at Madei[a Drive. Let's hope Steve can improve on his best ever time here at Brighton - a 9.12 second run with a 156mph terminal speed back in and brake into the 8 second bracket. That would absolutely make his weekend, definitely if he picks up the Geetong Trophy along the way to boot, again! Finally, it just leaves me to say thank you all, enjoy your day on the seafront and have a safe journey home with all your memories of the day. We look forward to seeing you all again here in Juan Manzano - VMCC Sprint Section

16 VINTAGE AND HISTORIC The Vintage and Historic Class has always produced an interesting, if varied selection of cars that made motor racing history in the pre-war thirties, and during the exciting post war racing scene. Perhaps the most outstanding event was the demonstration run by the Napier Railton in However, looking over recent years the choice of runner up to the Napier is far from easy. Would we choose the ex Raymond Mays ERA R4D, Roger Saul's beautiful Alfa Romeo P3 or perhaps the Halford Special which competed in the 1926 British Grand Prix. Which of the many powerful Bentleys would be chosen, and the elegant Bugatti Grand Prix T37 and T35B cannot be overlooked. The evocative 1916 Indianapolis Sunbeam and the 24 litre Hispano engine Delage surely must be included. Without doubt the most exciting entry this year is the famous Ecurie-Ecosse Lister Jaguar of well known historic racer David Ham, and must be favourite for a class win. Brian Lister began producing sports racing cars during the 1950's The most successfull was the Lister-Jaguar driven by Archie Scott Brown who won 11 out of 14 races entered and either broke or equalled the lap record for sports cars in every event entered during Sadly, Archie Scott Brown would lose his life in a major accident during bad weather at the Sports Car GP at Spa-Francorchamps in As is a longstanding tradition at Brighton, as well as the outright class winner, we have a race within a race. The VSCC Handicap. The eligible cars have handicap times set by the Vintage Sports Car Club who have detailed records of past per formance of all entrants. Rob Cobden in his methanol burning two stage supercharged Riley will be very quick and could well be in contention for the class win as well as the handicap. John Seber and Ron Turner with a pair of Wolseley Hornets could provide a sting with a surprising turn of speed.. However, last years winner David Venables may have found some extra power for his elegant Aston Martin, and limit man Richard Ellingworth could well take the trophy home with him at the end of the day. The fun of a Handicap is that every driver has a sporting chance and a surprise win is always on the cards NORMAN GOODMAN (2011)
