Accordng to the Oho lobs and Growth Plan Web ste, Oho voters wll have a chance to approve a state consttutonal amendment that wll call for a casno to be bult n the ctes of Cleveland,CoIumbus,Cncnnat and Toledo. The amendment, f passed, wll also lead to $ bllon n prvate nvestment, $200 mllon n lcensng fees, 5600 mllon annually n tax revenue and an estmated 20,000 more jobs. The possblty of new jobs and economc growth through ths proposed plan has some people excted. One n partcular s Toledo Mayor Carty Fnkbener. Between teachng hs two classes, hs research, hs countless ntervews and hs never-endng dutes as a husband and father, the psychology professor was recently named the edtor-n-chef of the Amercan Psychologcal Assocaton's frst handbook on the nvolvement of relgon and sprtualty n psychology. Studyng the relatonshps between sprtualty and mental health has been Pargament's callng card snce he frst came to the Unversty n 979. Over the past three decades, he has watched the world of psychology evolve to the pont where he s one of the foremost experts n hs feld. When the BBC, USA Today or The New York Tmes need an authorty, they call Pargament. Even before he earned hs doctorate degree from the Unversty of Maryland, he yearned to learn what makes people tck. I le stll remembers the bleak, behavorstc vew of human nature that prevaled when he entered the feld. And he stll dsagrees wth t. "It used to be that few people were nterested," he sad. By hs own count, he has also publshed over 75 artcles durng hs tenure at the Unversty. "BGSU's program s really a hdden gem," he explaned. "Well, maybe not anymore. There's such a great program here that people have begun to notce. Ths Unversty s one of the man centers for ths knd of study." The fact that hs wfe s a therapst based n Toledo mght have kept hm around as well, but I'argament prased the Unversty as beng ncredbly receptve even when many nsttutons were not. Some of hs most renowned work nvolves the ways n whch people use relgon to cope wth major lfe stresses. These studes strred up controversy when they suggested that a relance on a hgher power dd seem to help reduce mental turmol n dre stuatons. Though they weret't the frst of ther knd, I'argament defended the neutralty of the studes. "People are just so passonate about the topc," he sad. "Athests are passonate about beng athest, and devout ndvduals are equally passonate about ther own fath. Where there's emoton there's power. In France, lones can put what he's learned all these years of college and n the real world to good use. le knows he probably won't be the next Steven Spelberg, but some of Spelberg's col leagues may beatlhefestvalthsyearandcould even be watchng one of hs flms n the Short Flm Corner n an area just outsde of the tents where fame seems to seep through the cracks. In the meantme, he's workng on a full length documentary about the Lucasvlle rots of 993 and networkng full tme. He scored the move nght at the Cla-Zel from help from one of hs fraternty brothers and hs recommendaton for the flm program from hs former advsor and Assstant Dean of Students Deb Novak. "I'm stll connected to BG n a lot ofways.'hesad. dgest these fndngs. There are n lany cu rous but skept cal people out there, and that group s growng. There s no complete neutralty when t comes to relgon. But what gudes our research s curosty. We're open to whatever there s to learn. We make sure to avod overly smple statements." Pargament's own sprtualty admttedly nfluences hs work, hut hs lewsh fath s balanced out by the opposng perspectves of hs colleagues, such as psychology professor Annette Mahoney. Another mportant project under Pargament's supervson s the frst major study of the role of relgon n the famly. As part of the research, I'argament and hs colleagues are keepng n touch wth 75 pregnant couples through the frst year after gvng brth. The only real problem he has mght seem lke a blessng to most: "My bggest challenge s how to choose between so many nterestng thngs," he confessed. "There's just too much to get at. Ths s such a new area of study, and the more we learn the more there s to learn. I get overwhelmed sometmes. But there are a lot worse stuatons to be n," he added wth a laugh. "'Into the Woods' has been one of my favortes for a whle," he sad. "I've always wanted to be n t. I always wanted to play ths role, but I thought I was too young." Stonebrook sad hs character, the Baker, has to "go nto the woods to break a spellcastbyawtchwholves next door." He and hs wfe have to collect Cnderella's slpper, lack's cow (of lack and the Beanstalk), Lttle Red Rdng Hood's cape, ALPHA XI DELTA ALPHA XI DELTA and Rapunzel's golden har and gve them to the wtch so they can have ther happly ever after and have a chld. The muscal shows the sde of fary tales that audences rarely see: what happens after happly ever after. The show, whch was orgnally drected on Broadway by lames Lapne and showcases musc and lyrcs by Stephen Sondhem, mxes the experences of many fary tale characters and explans that granted wshes come wth a cost, accordng to the department Web ste. "There's a great message that the audence gets through the story," Sollsh sad. "There are consequences to your actons, and sometmes when you get your wsh, t's not always for the best." Sollsh sad he knew Stonebrook would be a good choce for the lead role, partly because Sollsh had played the Baker, and he saw smlartes between hmself and Stonebrook. "He just has a vulnerablty that the Baker needs. He's very honest n hs actng," Sollsh sad. "Honestly, when I played the part back when I was hs age... a lot of what saw n myself, see n hm n ths part." Stonebrook's fellow senor cast members also had good thngs to say about hm. "Cory's just the sweetest man, and he's one of the easest actors I've ever had to work wth," sad Kelly Rogers, who plays the Stepmother. "He's a catch for any theater person who wants hm n ther show." Tommy Thurston, who plays lack, sad he wll mss workng wth Stonebrook and the other senors. "It's overwhelmng because I'm sad because t's our last show together, and I'm happy because I feel honored to work wth them for one last tme," Thurston sad. "It's gong to be an awesome experence dong a show wth them one last tme." Holly Blnn, the Wtch n "Into the Woods," sad she wll also mss performng wth Stonebrook and Thurston. "It's knd of hard to thnk that I may never be performng wth them agan," Blnn sad. Stonebrook's goal s to be an actor n ether Chcago or New York.
