Aluminum Assault Over the last several seasons, OSU has established itself among the top hitting teams not only in the Big 12 Conference but on a national scale. In 2009, the Cowboys rank among the Big 12 s best in doubles (107), triples (19) and slugging percentage (.492). Last season, OSU led the Big 12 in three offensive categories batting average (.326), slugging percentage (.531) and home runs (89). The Cowboys finished second in the league in runs, hits, triples and RBIs. In 06, OSU led the Big 12 in homers, triples and slugging percentage, and in 2007 the Cowboys led the Big 12 in six offensive categories and ranked second in two more. Kings Of The Hill OSU also had one of the top pitching staffs in college baseball in 2008, and the 09 version has been solid as well. Four different Cowboy hurlers have at least five wins in 2009, and the pitching staff ranks second in the Big 12 Conference in saves (14) and strikeouts (464). Last season, the Cowboys led the Big 12 with a 3.98 team ERA and also topped the league with 21 saves. A product of Lubbock, Texas, Lyons was a second-team All-Big 12 pick a year ago after compiling a 12-2 mark and 3.31 ERA to go along with 92 strikeouts and only 19 walks. In 15 starts, he led the Big 12 with innings pitched, and he tied for the league lead with four complete games. Lyons 12 wins tied for fourth nationally in His win total also marked the eighthmost wins in a single season in OSU history, and the most by a Cowboy hurler since In Big 12 play, Lyons was 7-1 with a 2.99 ERA and four complete games in 12 starts. Lyons pitched OSU to an opening-round win over Western Kentucky in the NCAA Stillwater Regional with an 8.2 inning effort and was named to the All-Tournament Team. With a 5-5 mark in 2009, Lyons has won 17 of his 24 career decisions, including a stretch of 13 in a row. Lyons is 17-7 with a 3.70 ERA in his OSU career. The Big O One of the nation s top Friday night starters resides in Stillwater in the form of southpaw Andrew Oliver. In the first start of his junior season, Oliver tied a career high with 11 strikeouts against BYU, and he is 4-3 this season with 53 strikeouts in 45.2 innings of work. Oliver is coming off a dominating sophomore campaign in which he went 7-2 with a 2.20 ERA in 15 games. In nine Big 12 starts, he notched a 2.48 ERA and picked up three wins and a complete game. The Vermilion, Ohio native allowed two or fewer earned runs in 12 of his 14 starts in 2008 and opponents hit just.211 against him. Further proof of Oliver s dominance he racked up 96 strikeouts in 98.1 innings and struck out six or more in 10 of his starts, including reaching double figures three times. Oliver notched a career-best performance on April 11, pitching the Cowboys to a 1-0 win over No. 6 Nebraska with a complete game, three-hit shutout. He struck out 10 and did not allow a walk. He retired the first 15 batters in order, taking a perfect game into the sixth. Oliver is 18-9 with a 3.79 ERA in his OSU career, and he has racked up 228 strikeouts in innings of work. He s Back On the strength of a first-team All-Big 12 sophomore campaign, Neil Medchill was a 33rd round draft pick of the New York Mets last June. But the Cowboy outfielder spurned pro baseball to return to Stillwater for his junior campaign and add a boost to the OSU lineup. Medchill is hitting.333 with 12 homers and 50 RBIs in He ranks in the top 10 in the Big 12 in runs, home runs and total bases. In his first season in an OSU uniform in 2008, Medchill ranked fourth on the Cowboys with a.349 batting average to go along with 11 homers and 41 RBIs. He also led the Cowboys and ranked fifth in the Big 12 with a.628 slugging percentage. In 08 conference games, Medchill hit.370, which ranked as the fifth-highest average in league play. Along with his All-Big 12 honor, Medchill was named to the 2008 NCAA Stillwater Regional All-Tournament team. Big 12 s Best Tom Belza burst onto the scene in his first season of collegiate baseball and established himself as one of the nation s top freshmen. Belza moved into the Cowboys starting lineup early in the 2008 conference season and quickly proved to be a slick fielder and one of OSU s most dependable bats. A native of Loveland, Ohio, Belza led the Big 12 with a.386 batting average and collected three or more hits in 10 games, including a 6-for-6, six-run, five-rbi effort against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in March. The six-hit performance tied an OSU and Big 12 record, and the six runs also tied the school mark. During OSU s season-long 12-game winning streak, Belza hit.479 (23-for-48) with 11 RBIs and eight runs. Named a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger, Belza also earned secondteam All-Big 12 honors and was named to the NCAA Stillwater Regional All Tournament Team after going 5-for-14 (.357) with a homer and four RBIs. After spending last season at second base, Belza has spent the majority of his time at shortstop in He hit safely in OSU s first two games this season to extend a career-best hitting streak to 16 games. Belza was a prep star at Cincinnati s famed Moeller High, which produced such major leaguers as Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin. OKLAHOMA S TA TE 3

The Cowboys have a solid group of veterans to go along with several new faces who have shown the ability to contribute. Thomas Keeling - Keeling is 5-1 with a save in 15 appearances this season. A redshirt sophomore, the southpaw has racked up 71 strikeouts in just 48.1 innings. He earned his first career win at Arizona with a seven-inning, 12-strikeout effort. Jeff Breedlove - A senior hurler, Breedlove has made 68 appearances in his OSU career, which is tied for sixth on OSU s all-time list, and has proven effective both as a starter and out of the bullpen. Brad Propst - Propst has appeared in 13 games on the mound and earned his firstcareer save against Arizona. The sophomore is 1-0 with a 2.74 ERA while recording 17 strikeouts in 23.0 innings of work. Uriah Fisher - The freshman right hander has made nine appearances and is 2-0 with two saves and a 3.76 ERA. He earned a win in his first-career start against Western Illinois. Brett Davis - A senior southpaw who has made 24 appearances for the Cowboys over the last two seasons, Davis is 3-2 with 24 strikeouts in 28.0 innings during his OSU career. He is 1-0 in 10 appearances in 09. New Faces The Cowboys 2009 roster includes 12 newcomers, with six freshmen and five junior college transfers and one player who is starting his collegiate baseball career as a junior. Three of OSU s recruits have been selected in the MLB Draft, including freshmen Mark Ginther and Marcus Knecht in Highlighting the freshman class are a pair of infielders/right-handed pitchers from Oklahoma in Ginther and Randy McCurry. Ginther was a two-sport star at Jenks High School, while McCurry led Tupelo High School to three state championships. The group of junior college newcomers includes JUCO All-American Doug Kroll, who slugged 37 career homers and hit over.400 in both of his seasons at Iowa Western CC. After redshirting at OSU two years ago, Eric Walker played at Grayson County College last season and hit.372 with five homers and 62 RBIs while leading his team to a JUCO World Series title. Stars and Stripes During the summer of 2008, Cowboy pitchers Andrew Oliver and Tyler Lyons were members of the Team USA club that led the United States to a gold medal at the FISU World Championships. The duo was part of a squad that went 24-0 during its tour and a pitching staff that combined for a National Team Record 0.88 ERA. In 11 appearances with Team USA, Lyons was 2-0 with 17 strikeouts in 14 innings, and he did not allow an earned run. Oliver made four starts for Team USA and was 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA while racking up 24 strikeouts in 19.1 innings. OSU has had 10 players earn a spot on a Team USA roster, including three Lyons, Oliver and Jordy Mercer under head coach Frank Anderson. Feeling A Draft A trio of Cowboys are expected to be among the top prospects for the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. According to Baseball America, OSU has three of the top 100 college prospects for the 09 Draft in juniors Andrew Oliver, Tyler Lyons and Neil Medchill. Oliver is listed as the nation s seventh-best college draft prospect and Lyons the 23rd, while Medchill comes in at No. 87. Oliver is listed by Baseball America as the 11th-best overall prospect for this year s draft. The Closer OSU has a long tradition of players from small-town Oklahoma blossoming into collegiate stars, and it looks like the Cowboys could have another in freshman Randy McCurry. A native of Tupelo, Okla., which has a population of approximately 360, McCurry has made a team-high 24 appearances on the mound and has nailed down the role as the Cowboys closer. In those 24 outings, in which he has worked 33.0 innings and compiled a 2.73 ERA and 46 strikeouts, the right hander is 2-1 with nine saves. His nine saves ranks third in the Big 12 and is just one shy of OSU s singleseason record of 10, shared by Marques Davis (1997) and Dennis Livingston (1982). In limited action at the plate, McCurry is hitting.379 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. During his prep career, McCurry hit over 100 home runs and led Tupelo High School to three state championships. OKLAHOMA S TA TE 4

He also scored five runs, walked seven times and had a.958 slugging percentage. During the six-game stretch, David collected multiple hits five times and also had RBIs in five of the six games. David is hitting.341 on the season, which is tops on OSU, and leads the Big 12 with 21 doubles. He has a pair of seven-rbi games (vs. Western Illinois and Arkansas-Pine Bluff). Big 12 Bashing Senior outfielder Micheal Dabbs is leading OSU s offensive attack in conference play. In OSU s 22 Big 12 games, Dabbs is hitting.384 to go along with seven home runs, six doubles, two triples and 12 RBIs. He also sports a.744 slugging percentage in conference games, the highest in league play. Dabbs, who is fourth on OSU with a.325 batting average, had a career-long 12-game hitting streak earlier this season during which he hit.395 with three triples, five homers and 12 RBIs. A native of Chandler, Okla., Dabbs leads the Big 12 with five triples and ranks third with a.656 slugging percentage. Down Under Thunder Australia native Tyrone Hambly is another of OSU s hottest hitters of late. A senior infielder who has spent most of the season at third base, Hambly s production at the plate over the last two-plus months has resulted in a dramatic rise in his batting average. After a March 10 game at Arizona, the Aussie was hitting.238, but his offensive tear has raised his average to.337, which ranks second on the Cowboys. Hambly had a career-best nine-game hitting streak snapped at Missouri State. During the streak, he hit.452 (14-for-31). Entering the Baylor series, Hambly had hit safely in nine-straight Big 12 games and was 18-for-35 (.514) with six RBIs during that span. Coming Of Age After two seasons of showing glimpses of the talent that made him a 34th-round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles out of high school, Tyler Blandford has emerged as one of OSU s top pitchers in A hard-throwing right-hander, Blandford is 7-3 in 11 starts this season and leads the Cowboys with 92 strikeouts and 61.2 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just.191 against him, the lowest mark of any Big 12 hurler. Blandford has recorded at least five strikeouts in each of his 11 outings this season, including a stretch of three-straight games in which he had double figures in whiffs. He had back-to-back, 11-strikeout efforts against Rhode Island and Nebraska. In his seven Big 12 starts this season, Blandford is 4-3 with 56 strikeouts in 47.0 innings of work. Against OU, he racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed just one run on two hits to the league s top hiting team. He tossed 8.1 innings against the Sooners and threw 166 pitches, 101 of them for strikes. Blandford s seven wins are a career-high, besting his previous high of four last season. Short Hops The Cowboys are 8-11 against ranked teams in 2009, including three wins over Top 10 teams (#6 Cal State Fullerton, #7 Baylor & #9 Texas). OSU pitchers Andrew Oliver, Tyler Blandford and Thomas Keeling rank third, fourth and ninth, respectively, in the Big 12 in strikeouts. In the latest official NCAA RPI rankings, OSU comes in at No. 25. The Big 12 Conference has seven teams among the top 28 in the RPI. Two Cowboy pitchers had career-best strikeout performances against Oklahoma last week. Tyler Lyons racked up 13 strikeouts, the most by an OSU pitcher this season and three more than his previous career high, and Tyler Blandford bested his previous high with a 12- strikeout effort. Sophomore Tom Belza has hit safely in nine-straight Big 12 Conference games and is hitting.469 (15-for-32) during the streak. Tyler Blandford (92) and Andrew Oliver (90) are both on the verge of reaching the century mark in strikeouts this season. OSU has not had a pitcher collect 100 strikeouts in a season since Matt Smith had 114 in OKLAHOMA S TA TE 5
