3 Bob Geren 17 Manager Robert Peter Geren Named as A s bullpen coach, November 13, 2002 Named as A s manager, November 17, 2006 Birthdate: September 22, 1961 Birthplace/Resides: San Diego, California / Danville, California Contract Status: Signed through 2011 Bob Geren has compiled a (.474) record in four seasons as manager of the Oakland A s. He was named the 28th manager in franchise history and the 17th in Oakland history on November 17, Geren guided Oakland to an record and second place finish in the American League West in 2010 after posting losing seasons in each of his first three years at the helm of the A s. The A s used the disabled 23 times last year, which was second most in Oakland history, and the 23 players combined to miss an Oakland record 1397 games. After employing an Oakland-record 54 players and tying the club record by using the disabled list 22 times in 2007 en route to a record, the A s utilized 51 players in 2008 and set a new Oakland record by using the DL 25 times while finishing The A s utilized 51 players again in 2009 and used the DL 17 times in a season. Oakland has now used the DL 87 times during Geren s four seasons as manager, a total surpassed only by the Texas Rangers (98), and has employed 129 different players. Geren has been a member of the A s coaching staff for the last eight seasons, serving as the club s bench coach in 2006 after spending the previous three seasons as bullpen coach. He joined the A s organization in 1999 as manager of Single-A Modesto and spent the next three seasons ( ) at the helm of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats. He also managed in the Boston Red Sox farm system for three seasons, guiding Utica of the New York-Penn League in 1995, the Red Sox Gulf Coast League team in 1996 and Sarasota of the Florida State League in His seven-year managerial record on the minor league level is , including a record in the A s system. He gained further managerial experience in the 2005 off-season, leading Escogido in the Dominican Winter League. Geren was named the California League s Manager of the Year in 1999 after his Modesto club finished and won both halves in the Northern Division of the California League. He then led Triple-A Sacramento to consecutive first place finishes in the Southern Division of the Pacific Coast League, as the River Cats posted a record in 2000 and mark in A former catcher, Geren s professional playing career spanned 15 seasons, including five years in the major leagues with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres. Originally a first round pick of the Padres in 1979, Geren was traded to the St. Louis organization prior to making his major league debut with the Yankees in He played four seasons with New York from and enjoyed his best season in 1989 when he batted.288 and hit a career high nine home runs. After spending the 1992 season in Boston s minor league system, Geren finished his playing career with San Diego in He owns a.233 career batting average in 307 Major League games. Gallego joined the A s from the Colorado Rockies organization, where he spent nine seasons, including four as third base and infield coach on Clint Hurdle s major league staff, including a storybook 2007 season when they won the National League Pennant. Under his tutelage, the Rockies set a major league record for fielding percentage with a mark of in Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki led major league shortstops with a.987 fielding percentage that year and Todd Helton topped all National League first baseman with a.999 fielding percentage. Gallego joined the Rockies organization as a roving infield coordinator in 2000, a position he held until joining the major league coaching staff May 1, He returned to his minor league duties in , before rejoining the major league staff in Gallego began his coaching career as Boston s minor league infield instructor in Gallego s professional career began when the A s drafted him in the second round of the 1981 June draft out of UCLA. 5 Gerald Perry Hitting Coach Gerald June Perry Named A s hitting coach, October 20, 2010 Birthdate: October 30, 1960 Birthplace/Resides: Savannah, Georgia / Marietta, Georgia Gerald Perry returns to Oakland in 2011 as the club s new hitting coach, a position he previously held with the A s in Perry, hitting coach for Boston s Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket last season, began his major league coaching career in Seattle under Manager Lou Piniella in During his three seasons there, the Mariners reeled off a record (.617), including a 116-win playoff season in 2001 that set an American League record and tied the Major League mark (1906 Chicago Cubs) for most victories in a season. Perry, who enters his 28th season in professional baseball this spring, has also served as hitting coach with Pittsburgh ( ), Oakland and the Cubs ( ). During the 10 major league seasons as a hitting coach, his teams have advanced to the playoffs five times, including Mariners teams that played in the ALCS Series in 2000 and 2001, and the 2006 A s club that also appeared in the ALCS. In his second stint as hitting coach with Piniella, his 2008 Cubs ranked second in the National League in batting average (.278) and paced the NL in runs scored (855). The average was the franchise s highest mark in 71 years. That 2008 Chicago club also finished first in the National League and second in the majors with 636 walks. It marked the fifth time in which Perry helped an offense rank first or second in the league in walks (also with Seattle and 2006 with Oakland). During his three-year stay in Seattle, the Mariners led the majors in on-base percentage (.357) and walks (2018), and paced the American League in batting average (.278) and runs scored (2648). Besides last season, Perry previously spent three years in the Boston organization as a minor league hitting coach with Single-A Michigan (1997) and Triple-A Pawtucket (1998), and was the club s minor league hitting coordinator in Originally an 11th round selection by Atlanta in the 1978 Draft, Perry played parts of 13 major league seasons with the Braves ( ), Kansas City Royals (1990) and St. Louis Cardinals ( ). A.265 lifetime hitter with 59 home runs and 396 RBI in 1,193 games, the Savannah, Ga. native was named to the National League All-Star Team in 1988 when he batted.300 with 29 doubles, eight homers, 74 RBI and 29 stolen bases for the Braves. The previous season, 1987, he set an Atlanta record with 42 stolen bases, the most by a full-time Major League first baseman since Rod Carew swiped 49 with Minnesota in When he finished his career in St. Louis, he left as the Cardinals all-time leader in pinch hits (70). 6 Ron Romanick 37 PITCHING Coach Ronald James Romanick Named A s bullpen coach, October 16, 2007 Named A s pitching coach, November 1, 2010 Birthdate: November 6, 1960 Birthplace/Resides: Burley, Idaho / Fountain Hills, Arizona Ron Romanick begins his first season as the A s pitching coach in 2011 after spending three seasons on the A s major league coaching staff as bullpen coach. Romanick joined the A s coaching staff in 2008 and assisted former pitching coach Curt Young in developing one of the best young pitching staffs in baseball over the past three seasons. During that three-year period, the A s have posted the best earned run average (3.95) and fewest home runs (444) in the American League, and ranked second in the AL in both shutouts (34) and lowest opponents batting average (.254). Romanick joined the Oakland organization in 1999 as the A s minor league roving pitching instructor and spent nine seasons in that role. He also served as a pitching coordinator in the Seattle Mariners organization for seven seasons ( ). Romanick s major league career spanned three seasons ( ) with the California Angels, compiling a career record of and a 4.24 ERA in 82 appearances, all starts. He made 33 starts for the Angels as a rookie in 1984 and posted a record and a 3.76 ERA. Romanick followed up his rookie season with a 14-9 showing in After going 5-8 in 1986, he was traded to the New York Yankees organization and spent the 1987 season with Triple-A Columbus. He retired in 1988 after spending one year in the Milwaukee farm system. Romanick pitched at Arizona State before being drafted by the Angels in the first round of the Secondary Phase of the 1981 January Draft. A native of Bellevue, Wash., Ron makes his off-season home in Fountain Hills, Ariz. MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD W L ERA G IP H R ER BB SO TOTALS Joel Skinner BENCH Coach Joel Patrick Skinner Named A s bench coach, October 20, 2010 Birthdate: February 21, 1961 Birthplace/Resides: La Jolla, California / La Jolla, California Joel Skinner, who previously served nine seasons ( ) on the Cleveland Indians coaching staff, begins his first season as the A s bench coach in Skinner, who managed Cleveland s Double-A affiliate Akron to a record last season, served on the Indians major league staff for nine years, including the 2001 and 2007 clubs that advanced to the postseason. The La Jolla, Calif. native was named third base coach in 2001 and held that position for parts of eight seasons ( , ). He was named interim manager of the Indians midway through the 2002 season, posting a record after replacing Charlie Manuel. Skinner also served as bench coach for Cleveland during the 2006 campaign. Son of former major league outfielder Bob Skinner, who played 12 seasons with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis, Skinner played 15 seasons in professional baseball prior to his coaching career, including nine years on the big-league level with the Chicago White Sox ( ), New York Yankees ( ) and Indians ( ) when he registered a.228 batting average with 17 home runs and 136 RBI in 564 career games. 7 League Baseball history. The elder Skinner played in three All-Star Games and was a member of the 1960 World Series championship Pirates team. He logged seven seasons as a minor league manager, including three years in Akron ( , 2010), and has notched a career winning percentage of.562 ( ). Skinner guided five of his minor teams to the playoffs, earning Minor League Manager of the Year awards from Baseball America and The Sporting News after guiding Triple-A Buffalo to the International League championship in He also served as a coach on Team USA at the 2000 Futures Game. In 1998, he was named USA Today Baseball Weekly s Manager of the Year with Akron, and earned additional Manager of the Year honors in 1997 while at Kinston (Carolina League) and in 1995 with Watertown (New York-Penn League) after leading the Indians Single-A teams to league titles. He spent the 1994 season as a roving catching instructor after retiring during the season. Skinner was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 36th round of the 1979 Draft and was later picked by the Chicago White Sox in the 1982 Compensation Draft. The former catcher spent the last three seasons of his playing career ( ) battling back from right shoulder surgery after the 1991 season. The La Jolla, Calif. native played baseball and water polo at Mission Bay (Calif.) High School. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three daughters, Kate, Erin and Tara, and one son, Cameron. He was the A s first base coach in 2007 and split his duties between first base and third base in The 2010 season was Waller s fourth on the A s coaching staff and his sixth on a major league staff, as he was San Diego s bullpen coach in 1995 and first base coach in Waller spent 19 years in the Padres organization, beginning in 1988 as a coach with the Padres rookie-level club in Spokane, Wash. He then served as the club s minor league outfield and base running instructor from before taking over the managerial duties at Spokane for the 1994 season. Following his one-year stint on the major league staff in 1995, Waller served as San Diego s coordinator of minor league instruction from and as director of player development from Selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth round of the 1977 First-Year Player Draft, Waller played 11 seasons professionally, including parts of four seasons in the majors. In his first season of professional ball, he batted.320 for Calgary and led the Pioneer League in hits, runs and RBI on his way to league MVP honors. He made his major league debut with the Cardinals in 1980 and appeared in five games for the Redbirds. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in the off-season to complete a deal that sent Leon Durham and Ken Reitz to the Cubs for Bruce Sutter. He appeared in 30 games for the Cubs in 1981 and finished the season batting.268 with three home runs and 13 RBI. Waller was traded to the White Sox in December of 1982 and signed a free agent contract with the Astros in He appeared in 11 games for the Astros in 1987, his last season of professional ball. A native of Fresno, Calif., Waller graduated from Hoover High School and attended San Diego City College for two years. Tye makes his off-season home in San Diego with his wife, Cynthia.
