1 FISH BITES The Marlins continue a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at 7:10 p.m. The homestand began with Miami dropping two of three to the Philadelphia Phillies. Tonight, the Fish will send RHP Tom Koehler to the mound for his seventh career start against the Dodgers, going 3-2 with a 2.94 ERA. He will be facing the Dodgers' LHP Rich Hill, who in two previous appearances (one start) against the Marlins has gone 0-1 with a ERA. This evening's national anthem will be performed by the Coral Gables High School band, while ceremonial first pitches will be thrown by Dr. Frank Civantos and former Marlins starter and current broadcaster Al Leiter. Tonight is the 12 th All-Star Saturday at Marlins Park, and the first 10,000 fans will get an Al Leiter 1996 All-Star bobblehead, presented by Sunshine Gas. The Fish came into this homestand after returning from a 1-6 road trip to New York (1-3) and Cleveland (0-3), marking their worst road swing of seven-or-more games since going 1-6 against Colorado (1-2) and San Diego (0-4) from August 15-21, Upon conclusion of this series, Miami will hit the road again, going on a six-game trip to Atlanta (Sept ) and Philadelphia (Sept ). LAST NIGHT VS. LOS ANGELES With a 4-1 win, the Marlins ran their winning streak against the Dodgers to five games. Miami's second batter of the game, J.T. Realmuto, put Miami on the board with his 10 th home run of the season. Miami extended its lead in the second, as Chris Johnson plated Jeff Francoeur with a run-scoring single. In the fifth, Christian Yelich scored the first run of the inning with a squeeze bunt to score Dee Gordon. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Ichiro Suzuki was hit by a pitch to score the second run of the frame. Yelich led the offense with a two-hit game. José Fernández (14-8) pitched a gem, as he allowed just three hits, struck out 14 and walked three over 7.0 scoreless innings. A.J. Ramos entered with two runners on and no outs in the ninth, retiring all three batters faced for his 33 rd save of the season. ELIAS SAYS... José Fernández, making his 74 th Major League start, struck out 14 Dodgers as the Marlins came out victorious on Friday. It was the 17 th start in which Fernandez fanned at least 10 batters. Over the last 50 years, only four other pitchers had that many 10-strikeout starts over their first 75 Major League starts: Dwight Gooden (27 such starts in first 75, 1984 to 1986 seasons), Kerry Wood (18, 1998 to 2001), Mark Prior (17, 2002 to 2005), and Yu Darvish (24, 2012 to 2014). LUCKY #13 José Fernández struck out 14 Dodgers last night to tie a career high (fifth time). He is one of 19 starting pitchers to record 13-or-more strikeouts this season, but is only one of two starters to have multiple games with 13+ Ks. Fernández has tallied five such games this season, while Clayton Kershaw has three. In addition, he is the only starting pitcher with multiple 14-strikeout games this year, doing so three times. DEALING Last night, Miami pitchers recorded 17 strikeouts, equaling a Club record for most strikeouts in a 9.0-inning game. The only other time the Marlins punched out 17 in a 9.0-inning affair was on July 21, 2002 vs. Montreal. The 17 strikeouts are the second-most in a game this season, as they tallied 18 in an 11.0-inning contest on July 18 at Philadelphia. The Club record for most strikeouts in a game of any length is 22, done over 12.0 innings on July 6, 2005 vs. Milwaukee. TK REFRESH In 10 starts after the All-Star break, Tom Koehler has gone 3-3 with a 2.85 ERA (60.0 ip/19 er), while holding opponents to a.230 average. In that stretch, he has gone at least 6.0 innings eight times and has held opponents to three runs or fewer in seven of the 10 contests. His ERA over that span ranks sixth in the National League (min. 8 starts), while his average against ranks 10 th. HOLLYWOOD HITS J.T. Realmuto has feasted on Dodgers pitching over his career to the tune of a.429 average (15x35). He has recorded at least one hit in each of his 10 games played against Los Angeles. The 10 consecutive games with a hit against the Dodgers is tied for the second-longest streak to open a career since 1980, with Stephen Drew, Chris Stynes and Barry Larkin. Only Juan Pierre has had a streak longer in that span, hitting in his first 16 games against Los Angeles. LEFT IS RIGHT Overall record on this date: 14-8 The Marlins are now 22-10/.688 in games when their opponent starts a left-handed pitcher, the second-best mark in the Majors, behind the Pittsburgh Pirates (18-8/.692). Miami has won 10 of its last 14 when a lefty starts against it, and handed Clayton Kershaw two of his three losses this season. As a team, the Fish are hitting.268 against lefties, the third-best mark in the NL, behind Arizona (.274) and Colorado (.269). Martín Prado leads all of baseball with a.427 (50x117) average against lefthanders. RAGING BULL(PEN) Miami's bullpen has been one of the best in the National League this season, as its 26 wins are tied with the Dodgers for the league lead, while its 478 strikeouts rank third and.234 average against ranks fourth. The pen's 3.64 ERA and 478 strikeouts currently rank fifth in Club history, while their collective average against is second behind a.232 mark in Marlins relievers have struck out 9.16/9 innings, the highest mark in Franchise history, just ahead of a 9.15 mark in AFTER THE BREAK Christian Yelich has seen his average dip following the All-Star break, however, his home run and RBI numbers have taken significant turns upward. He ranks second in the National League with 42 RBI after the break, behind Nolan Arenado (48), while his 11 home runs are tied for 13 th, behind league leader Jedd Gyorko (19). He has recorded 58 hits after the break, tied for 14 th, while teammate Martín Prado is tied with Adonis Garcia and Yadier Molina for ninth with 60. Realmuto ranks sixth in the NL, Prado eighth and Yelich 12 th. The Marlins are currently the only NL team with three hitters batting.300-or-better.
