Is cycling mainly for low income groups? No. Cars are very pricy in Denmark, but average income is high, and most families have at least one car. Still, a lot of people choose to ride a bike on a regular basis. Riding a bike is something enjoyed by everybody - top leaders, Nobel Prize winners, and even the Danish crown prince rides a bike. How do children learn to ride a bike? Mom and dad. Most kids in Denmark ride a bike before they start school - anything else would be a bit embarrassing for the family. We don t run school programs on how to ride a bike as we do on swimming. Instead we focus on building up good transport habits on traffic rules and safety. This is a great strength, but sometimes a problem for people who don t grow up here, as they need attention not be excluded from this important part of Danish culture. page 4
Cycle Action Plan sets high ambitions Aarhus Cycle City is the name given to all cycle-related activities initiated by Aarhus Municipality. In Aarhus, almost 25% of residents use a bicycle to get to work, but the ambition is to increase this proportion considerably. A large-scale Cycle Action Plan sets out completely new ambitions for cycle traffic with projects totaling 34 million Euro. This will put Aarhus on the national map as one of the most cycling-friendly municipalities in Denmark - if not the world! New projects to be implemented include new, high-grade cycle routes, Denmark s first cycle streets, projects to reduce accidents involving cyclists and trucks, high-grade parking facilities, high-grade path and route signage, cycle barometers, electronic info displays, massive upgrading of cyclist safety and movement through various improvements at intersections, and Park & Bike terminals. 7 urban cycle solutions Vekso was founded 60 years ago with the purpose of developing and producing cycle parking facilities for Danish schools. Today, Vekso is an international brand in the market of urban furniture and lighting, and we strive to combine design, qua lity, usability, and sustainability in all our products. In order to have a cycle-friendly city where people choose the bicycle as a means of transportation, we must have safe and cyc-list-friendly facilities. Vekso has than 60 years of experience in the development and production of a variety of different high quality cycle parking solutions for different needs and places. We integrate communications technology in many of our solutions, which also include cyclist service equipment for the urban space - such as bicycle air pumps, bicycle barometers, cyclist counters, signage, and locking devices. Our knowledge of urban cycling gives an edge to our competitive advantage, and we employ two skilled mobility experts with Danish and international experience with promoting cycling. 8 The first city to focus on cycling Ten years ago, Odense took the lead in pioneer work as the Danish National Cyclist City; today, cycling is the strongest landmark of Odense. Now, cyclists in Odense benefit from 500 km of cycling lanes, tire pumps, cycle-counters, indoor and secured parking spaces, and many street intersections with first priority for cyclists. Apart from continuously improving cycling facilities, our focus is aimed on campaigns with a motivating effect and we want to reach out to as many target groups as possible. The vision for future initiatives is to keep Odense a first-rate city for cyclists - because Odense makes cycling easier, safer, and comfortable. Because of its knowledge in the field of cycling, Odense has been chosen to participate in the Urban Best Practice Area at EXPO Shanghai Parking; urban planning; campaigns; innovative solutions Contact by cyclecity@odense.dk
bicycle retailers association The Danish Two-wheel Retailers Association (DATRA) is a trade association for bicycle retailers. We were founded in 1901 and today we represent the interests of many of the bicycle retailers in Denmark. Our headquarters are in the cycling city of Odense. DATRA promotes cycling and safety in Denmark through cooperation with relevant partners on politics, lobbying, and counseling. In addition to this, DATRA supports innovation and improves the professionalism in the retailer s business through education and certification of the people working in the business. We also take part in bicycle campaigns and in communication to cyclists about traffic rules, safety, and maintenance of bicycles. 10 planning with cyclists in mind The municipality of Fredericia has a well-established tradition for planning with cyclists in mind: we have than 140 km of main bicycle paths and, and the number of trips made on a bike is similar to the national average of 19 percent. We acknowledge the numerous beneficial side effects associated with cycling and strive to set new and improved standards for cycle traffic. Therefore, we have now launched a large-scale initiative called Fredericia Cycle City. Fredericia Cycle City is an initiative based on four projects aimed at increasing the number of cyclists, distances traveled by bicycle, and creating a safer and better environment for cyclists. Six new cycle paths will be created, as well as a catalog for local companies with ideas on how to encourage cycling. Additionally, parking facilities in the city will be improved, and a traffic policy for each school in Fredericia will be compiled and implemented, with subsequent campaigns for children. 11 better cities for people Gehl Architects vision is to create better cities for people. Our approach to design extends beyond the use of sustainable materials and the advocating walking, cycling, and alternative transport - we work to promote a holistic sustainable lifestyle, and thereby to improve people s quality of life. We believe there is to cycling than cycling. In short, a bikeable city is a good city for people. In Mexico City, our Mobility Strategy Plan promotes energyefficient mobility to all income groups to ensure a competitive, equitable, and sustainable city. In New York City, we have worked to integrate bicycling into the wider transport network, inviting all people - young and old, male and female to bicycle in the city and, in turn, promote economic activity and diverse street life. 12 Promoting cycle tourism VisitDenmark strengthens tourism to Denmark and adds value for partners by creating greater global awareness and attracting visitors all year round. Active Denmark is one of VisitDenmark s close partners responsible for promoting and developing theme tourism in Denmark. Active Denmark has developed six quality label schemes. One of them, Cycling Denmark, focuses on developing and promoting the best cycling experiences for cycle visitors. The quality label scheme leads the way to the regions and accom- modation options that provide the best facilities for cyclists. Look for the red cycling symbol if you are searching for cyclefriendly experiences in Denmark. Marketing; theme tourism; cycling holidays in Denmark
BATTERy-free bike light Reelight is a permanent bike light. Reelight does not use batteries, but produces its own environmentally-friendly energy by means of induction. Reelight is permanently mounted, so you always have your lights with you. They are on whenever you cycle, which makes you visible and safe in traffic - day and night. According to a study conducted by Reelight, Odense Cycle City, TrygFonden, and the University of Aalborg, permanent bike lights reduce accidents by 32% while boosting a cyclists sense of security by up to 85%. Reelight provides safety and mobility to cyclists: the safety of always being visible in traffic. Reelight is also about freedom: the freedom of never having to remember to take our bicycle lights with us; the freedom of never having to worry about the impact of bike light batteries on the environment. Battery-free bike lights; reducing bicycle-related accidents; bike light campaigns; freedom and safety for cyclists page 12
Interdisciplinary approach to biking The municipality of Ballerup has approximately 50,000 residents and is situated in the greater Copenhagen area. Ballerup promotes biking to advance goals related to a diverse set of themes, including health, social issues, and the environment. Our goal is that people choose the bike as their everyday means of transportation to work, school, and recreational activities, and that the state of health of the general public is improved through biking. In 2009, the municipality of Ballerup adopted a bicycle policy. The process involved all departments of the municipality, because we believe that biking can only be successfully promoted by use of an interdisciplinary approach. This year, we were also appointed Cycle City of the Year 2009 by the Danish Cyclists Federation. Interdisciplinary approach to biking

We have companies and offices in 35 countries, and a total of 6,000 employees. COWI offers cross-discipline consulting services for cycle traffic, and we have great expertise in specific subjects: Reflection and counseling Planning and prioritization of cycle infrastructure Design of cycle paths Safety for cyclists Operation optimization Planning of bicycle parking Service for cyclists, including public bike sharing systems Campaigns and image Reviews Impact calculations for health, health science, and health economics Cycle planning; cycle parking; campaign concepts; health impacts; economical reviews; evaluations page 14
Small municipality - big scale cycling The municipality of Frederiksberg is the smallest municipality in Denmark. At just nine square kilometers, and a density of about 10,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, it is the most densely populated local authority in the country. This allows short distances, which in turn provide good opportunities for cycling. In 2007, one third of all trips were by bicycle, and for distances shorter than five kilometers it was nearly half. The Municipality has a dual approach to cycling: Continue improvements of the physical environment for cycling traffic Strengthen the citizens own motivation for cycling Urban planning; satisfaction and behavior of cyclists; safety; bicycle parking; campaigns
The city with innovative cycling solutions For Copenhageners, cycling is as natural as brushing their teeth. Very few Copenhageners regard themselves as cyclists. Most see themselves merely as citizens who transport themselves from A to B, using the fastest and most flexible mode of transport, which the bicycle just happens to be in most cases. Copenhagen illustrates that cycling can become a modern metropolis preferred mode of transport. This has been achieved, not least, because the bicycle - whether it is used for commuting, going to the beach or the bakery, or for bringing the kids to kindergarten - is a key component for urban planning in Copenhagen. Get a first-hand experience with Copenhagen bicycling culture in June Copenhagen will be the host city of Velo-city Global 2010, a conference that focuses on the potential and challenges of bicycling, and which is expected to attract participants from all over the world. 18 Bringing high fashion to bikes Velorbis creates and exports iconic and classic designer bicycles that reflect world-renowned Danish design and chic Copenhagen cycling culture. Our selection also includes innovative cargo bikes, tricycles, and electric bicycles. Velorbis has an exclusive concept store in Copenhagen and retailers in many countries worldwide. Designed in Denmark and hand built in Germany, Velorbis bicycles fuse impeccable design and flawless craftsmanship with first class components, ultimate quality, supreme comfort, and reliable practicality. We want to inspire urban commuters to adopt the classic style bicycle as their preferred choice of sustainable, green transportation. Velorbis also works with environmentally conscious organizations looking to incorporate sustainable urban transportation into their businesses. 19 Communicating the benefits of cycling Aros Kommunikation is a communication agency providing private businesses and public institutions with strategic and integrated communication solutions. Including advertising, public relations, campaigns, websites, graphic identities, and much. Aros Kommunikation has great knowledge in branding cities as attractive cycling areas and generating attention to the benefits of cycling. We manage campaigns for several Danish public institutions. We increase awareness via mass media, use social media to involve and engage, contribute to the ongoing debate in local and national media, and send event people out in the streets to interact directly with the citizens. Further, we give speeches and presentations on methods for changing behavior in connection with cycling, traffic, and health. Communication; branding; campaigns; media page 18
promoting physical ACTIVITy The Danish Cancer Society s vision is a life without cancer. This vision is realized by preventing the development of cancer, offering the possibility of a cure, and helping those affected. The Danish Cancer Society has a strong brand and works professionally for the promotion of health-related legislation, campaigns, and urban planning. Physical activity reduces the risk of some forms of cancer and other serious health conditions. Physical activity is also one way of returning to a normal life after cancer. This is the reason for the Danish Cancer Society s active involvement in many cycling projects, where we operate on many levels: Lobbying in the political arena Cooperation with nine municipalities on a shared cycling strategy Urban planning & the environment s impact on the level of physical activity Partnerships Public health; cycling as a health promoting activity; cycling strategy; partnerships; corporation with municipality
we make cycling easy Pleasure, safety, and mobility. For than a century, Danish Cyclist Federation (DCF) has been the voice of people using the bicycle in their everyday lives. At present, we function as the interface between all relevant players in the field of cycling. Twenty people are employed at the headquarters in Copenhagen. DCF is successfully working for better safety and infrastructure for cyclists - both on local and national levels. This effort is based on direct lobbying as well as consultancy, innovation, and campaigns. The largest campaign is cycle to work - when than 100,000 Danes cycle to work for a full month each spring. A similar campaign for children runs in one third of all schools in Denmark. New campaigns and other projects are always in progress and under development. 22 public transport and bike door-to-door DSB is the main train operator in Denmark with an objective to operate environmentally-friendly passenger transport services. DSB operates on a commercial basis and carries than 195 million passengers every year. DSB is an Independent Public Company owned by the Danish Ministry of Transport, and employs a staff of approximately 9,300. DSB aims to make the combination of cycling and train attractive and easy accessible. In the Copenhagen suburban area, it is free to bring your bike on the train S-tog and for other train services we offer a limited capacity for bikes. At all of our stations we offer parking facilities, and in the next 5-10 years we plan to offer a higher parking capacity as well as an improved quality of parking. At the central station in Copenhagen, you have the possibility to rent a bike, and in the coming years this will also apply to other bigger stations.
