2 Bike Rodeo Toolkit: introduction and contact Goal of the Bike Rodeo Toolkit: to provide an accessible set of resources at no charge to support schools and community groups interested in delivering bicycle safety education for children through on-site presentations and bike rodeos that teach basic helmet fit, bike maintenance and safe riding habits / rules of the road. Development of the Bike Rodeo Toolkit: Over 2012 and 2013, parent volunteers from Devonshire, Elmdale, Churchill and Broadview Public Schools developed the idea of sharing equipment for promoting safe cycling. Green Communities Canada arranged for funding through Citizens for Safe Cycling, City of Ottawa The Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Parachute Canada granted permission to use previously published text and graphics to make instructional banners on helmet fit and bicycle inspection. Right Bike offered to store a Toolkit at their headquarters. The first use of the complete Box was at Churchill School on May 22, Green Communities Canada arranged funding for the creation of a second Toolkit in the Fall of 2013 Ottawa Safety Council offered to store a toolkit at their office. 3 Bike Rodeo Toolkit: contents Bin for light items 100 half tennis balls for laying out bike handling courses 8 pylons (no hole in top) for additional marking Two instructional banners (bilingual English and French): one for 2V1 Helmet Fit, one for ABC Quick Check bicycle inspection Six printed road signs bolted on 4-foot pipes ( holes have been cut in box to accommodate pipes; bolts may need occasional tightening); 2 stop signs, 2 yield signs, 2 one-way signs (place one-way signs in box last due to width) CAUTION signs are light to be portable and prevent injury BUT are prone to bending and scratching Adhesive reflective sheet material for making stick-on reflectors for participant bicycles (typically yellow or white for front forks, red for rear forks) Rodeo and Bike Club tip sheets, Bike Safe, Walk Smart video on DVD Six 18-inch orange pylons (black bases, hole in top) for holding road signs Bike Rodeo Box online These instructions, additional manuals and a calendar to reserve dates to use the Box can be found at envirocentre.ca/learningcentre/bike-rodeo-toolkit/ 3

4 Bike Rodeo Toolkit: guidelines Bins and 18-inch pylons must be stored together at Ottawa Safety Council office Toolkit must be reserved prior to use on calendar available at envirocentre.ca/learningcentre/bike-rodeo-toolkit/ Event organizers reserving the Toolkit are responsible for pickup, use and return of all equipment Any equipment damage or loss must be reported to Toolkit contact by event organizers who will be responsible for funding repair or replacement Suggestions for improving Toolkit contents, logistics and instructions are appreciated! 4

6 Volunteer briefing Bike Rodeo objective: encouraging children and parents to use bicycles by reinforcing safe cycling habits (equipment, bike handling and rules of the road) in a fun and age-appropriate way. Volunteers make it happen: the Bike Rodeo is not possible without help and teamwork is key. Participant experience depends on appropriate facilitation of challenges; make it safe and fun. Know where first aid post is and who to notify in case of injury. During and after the event: give feedback on what is working or needs to be changed please help to clean up. 6

Go Slow Balance Suggested Equipment pylon with number 3 stamp + inkpad chalk 6 pylons watch with second hand/timer Suggested Instructions layout 3 lines approx 12m long, 2m apart; a pylon at each end of each line start up to 3 participants, each on own line; challenge is how slow can they cycle the line without veering off or putting foot on ground options: time riders who can repeat to challenge own time; riders compete for last place mark passports 10

Shoulder Check & Signal Suggested Equipment pylon with number 4 chalk 6 pylons clipboard with large printed symbols stamp + inkpad IDEALLY have 2 people staff the station Suggested Instructions layout 2 lines approx 20m long, 2m apart; a pylon at each end of each line and a pylon to right of line about 8m from start explain importance of shoulder check and signal before moving out of line; review (quizz) signals quickly; instruct participants on activity start up to 2 participants, each on own line; challenge is to cycle the line without veering off or putting foot on ground at normal speed, doing a left-hand shoulder check and signal to look at symbol being held up by person standing to left of start options: just do shoulder check (younger), add second shoulder check after signal (older), add actual turn at end of straight line at finish, quizz participant to identify the symbol that was held up mark passports 11

Rock Dodge & Slalom Suggested Equipment pylon with number 5 2 pylons chalk (optional) approx 30 ball halves (incl. one differently-coloured rock ) stamp + inkpad Suggested Instructions set up seven balls along 15m curb line (could chalk this line); place rock 2/3 of the way along, about 40cm left of curb ; place seven balls along line to left of curb, narrowing from 1m away to 50cm away (restricting of road ); place up to 15 balls about 1.5m apart in line after end of road for slalom (pylon at end) mark passports 12

Figure Eight Suggested Equipment pylon with number 6 chalk (if only using 16 balls) 16 ball halves (or appox 40 balls if no chalk used) yield and one-way signs (optional) stamp + inkpad Suggested Instructions set up figure eight route with chalk and/or ball halves to lay out road (16 balls used to mark outside of intersection) dimensions should be to challenge riders to lean into moderately sharp left and right turns optional signs could be used at intersection mark passports 13

Driveway & Intersection Suggested Equipment pylon with number 7 stamp + inkpad chalk 2 hockey nets approx 12 pylons approx 30 ball halves stop sign on post Suggested Instructions set up driveway with vision-obstructing nets on each side leading into a 2- way road that leads to an intersection (e.g. 3-way junction with stop sign) review: be visible, be predictable, be manoeuvrable, communicate explain activity to ride out of driveway into road and stop and signal at intersection as if cars and pedestrians will be there too mark passports 14
