2 SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTION MANUAL The purpose of this manual is to provide you with the necessary information to perform your duties as a School Crossing Guard. Please read this manual very carefully. For questions, contact: ANDREA GARCIA Valerie Barrientos Job Responsibilities: The School Crossing Guard will supervise and provide safe crossing of school children at designated crosswalks and/or traffic control devices. School Crossing Guards are not Law Enforcement Officers and do not have the authority to enforce traffic laws. School Crossing Guard Duties: To ensure motorists yield the right of way to pedestrian school children. To ensure children obey traffic control devices. To educate pedestrian children in good safety habits, such as using crosswalks and observing vehicle traffic before crossing streets. 2

3 To educate crossing children in the proper use of pedestrian traffic signal push- buttons. Crossing Instructions: The following instructions provide the School Crossing Guard with basic information to properly cross school children. Specific instructions pertaining to your location and training will be provided by Coordinator, Andrea Garcia. School Crossing Guards will stand at the assigned crossing position (traffic signal or stop sign) approximately two (2) feet back from the curb line. Issued stop sign should be in hand and in a lowered position. Direct crossing children to activate the pedestrian traffic push-button signal. Instruct crossing children in the proper observation and use of the pedestrian walk and do not walk signals. Upon confirming all traffic has stopped, instruct all children to remain at the curb. With issued portable stop sign, proceed to the center of the street, holding sign above head. Direct crossing children to walk across the intersection. Once all children in crosswalk are safely across, return to the curb line to await the next group of crossing children. Additional Instructions: Children should cross in groups only. Do not allow stragglers to cross. Direct them to remain at the curb until you return from crossing the previous group. Children on bicycles are to dismount and walk bicycles across the intersection. 3

4 Equipment: Schools are responsible for issuing the reflective vest and reflective stop sign. You can use Amazon to order the reflective vests and Schoolmasters Safety to order the reflective stop sign. The vest must be visible at all times (over outer clothing) while crossing the children. This stop sign is to be utilized each time children are walked across intersections or crosswalks. Your Stop sign and safety vest must be turned in to your assigned school at the end of your Crossing Guard Duties Accidents: Report all accidents involving pedestrians and crossing guards to the Denver Police Department immediately. DENVER POLICE DEPARTMENT (911 Emergency) Denver Police Department (non-emergency ) Department of Safety Coordinator, Andrea Garcia Injuries: If a student is seriously injured and requires medical attention: DO NOT MOVE THE STUDENT Call the above numbers if you are able. This may require your requesting assistance from a child or passerby. Notify school administration with details of the accident. 4

5 Attempt to obtain license number, color, make and model of the vehicle involved in the accident. If you are injured, and do require medical attention: Seek necessary emergency or non-emergency medical attention as soon as possible. As soon as possible, report all facts of the accident/injuries to a school administrator and the Department of Safety at Address or Phone Number Changes The School Crossing Guard Program requires that you keep a current address and phone number on file at all times. If you have a change of address or phone number, you must notify Andrea Garcia at
