3 Purpose summary This leaflet is designed to help support you find the best and safest way to travel to College. We endeavour to provide the most up-to-date information and to encourage all those making journeys to and from the College to consider travel options that are both environmentally sustainable and healthy. To support this, we have a regularly updated Travel Plan which helps focus our work in this area. The key themes of which are to be secure best value, be environmentally sustainable, be healthy and encourage social engagement. Economic we believe more sustainable travel modes can save individuals money. Increasing the numbers of staff and students using public transport can make services more viable, and car sharing can significantly reduce travel costs. Environmental - a reduction in car journeys made to and from our sites reduces the level of air and noise pollution Health - by adopting more sustainable modes of travel, such as walking or cycling, people's physical and mental wellbeing improves and they lead a healthier lifestyle. Social - people who are not cocooned in their cars and interact with other individuals on their journey to and from the site enjoy happier and less stressful lives. Further, increased pedestrian and cycle activity makes areas feel safer. We hope you enjoy your time with us and might consider these alternatives when planning your journey to/from college or CECAMM. 3
4 Health benefits of more exercise If you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life it is essential to be physically active. For most people, the easiest way to get moving is to make activity part of everyday life, like walking or cycling instead of using the car to get around. However, the more you do, the better, and taking part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier. As part of its healthy lifestyle initiatives The Isle of Wight College encourages cycling to college and has invested in bicycle racks and showering facilities. Helping the environment Cycling to college is encouraged, not only from a healthy living perspective, but also as part of the college s green travel plan to save fuel, travel costs and to reduce CO 2 emissions. 4

9 Live bus times now available on Southern Vectis website! What is "real time"? Southern Vectis are very excited to bring you a brand new development on their website. Live Real time information for your bus times. We hope you will find this new feature helpful when planning your journey. It means you can enjoy that last sip of tea before leaving the house, or even wait in the dry a little longer if it's raining outside, as you'll be able to see how many minutes away your bus actually is! Real time is a system which tracks the bus along its route and therefore knows when it should arrive at each stop. Occasionally a bus may not be seen by the system as it depends on it having a good signal strength. In the event a bus cannot be seen the displays will revert back to showing timetabled time. How to use the "real time" feature: 1. On the home page there is a new Live Bus Times section. 2. Click on the arrow in the choose route and direction drop down menu. Scroll down to your route, choose the direction you are interested in. 3. Now select your stop in the drop down menu below. The stops are listed geographically, so they appear in the order the bus stops at them. On routes 1, 6, 7 & 9 bus stops are listed in sections according to which variation the bus is following 4. Once your bus stop is selected click show me now. This will show a live feed for all buses due at your stop 5. If the time next to your journey is shown in minutes, this is the estimated time until your bus reaches the stop - this will countdown as the bus gets nearer. If a static clock time is showing, this is scheduled time of bus. 6. This information automatically refreshes every 30 seconds, so you can leave it on your screen and watch your bus approaching. However please be ready when the countdown gets low. 7. To look at another stop, just choose a new service, direction and bus stop and away you go. 8. You can now bookmark your most used bus stops, just select your stops from the drop menu then when the live times appear, click on the bookmark button to save the bus stop to your homepage. 9

The bus pass forms are available to download from the website or printed from Student Services. There is a flash pass for travel during weekdays during term time. There is also a smartcard, which includes weekends and half terms. Neither of these bus passes includes travel in Easter, Christmas or the summer holidays. You may be eligible through one of the IW College Bursaries for support towards the costs of travelling to and from college. Support through Bursaries for travel is for a Southern Vectis flash pass which you can pay to top up to a smartcard bus pass at the beginning of the year if you would like to. Support through the 19+ and Advanced Learner Loan Bursaries is either through a flash pass or a travel allowance paid in arrears please speak to Student Services if you would like more details. Travel is awarded to bursary learners living at least 3 miles from college and you will need to complete a separate bus pass form. If you are a student living within 3 miles but have a placement outside college please speak to Student Services, as we may also be able to help with this. Support through the bursary is not available to students on an apprenticeship. If you already have support for your travel through an EHCP, the Isle of Wight Council, or through another source we cannot also support your travel. Other forms of discounted travel If you are aged 16 years old, Southern Vectis will allow a 50% discount on bus fares.
