1 Terms and Conditions for Organised Club Rides The Terms and Conditions detailed below apply to all joining club rides organised by officials of the Axe Valley Pedallers (herein after referred to as the AVP). By joining the AVP organised rides the ride leader and every participant acknowledges acceptance of these Terms and Conditions 1. An organised club ride is one where an AVP member is appointed as official ride leader. The ride leader is not required to attend or lead all the rides, their role is one of Club appointed sponsor for the ride. 2. The ride leader will provide a short ride description to be advertised on the Club s website so that it is very clear what type of riders are suited to the ride. 3. The ride leader will make sure the weekly ride details and a short post-ride review are posted to the Club s Facebook page 4. The ride leader will act as a contact point for new members/riders joining the ride for the first time 5. If the ride leader is unable to make the ride themselves, they are to ensure that they make provision for someone else to lead, else formally cancel the ride. 6. The ride leader will informally (with the exception of special events, a roll call/register is not required) monitor rider attendance to ensure that all riders are Club members (visitors and nonmembers will be permitted up to two rides before joining). If there is any doubt, the ride leader can check membership status with the committee. 7. Rides with more than 6 riders require a back marker to ensure all riders are accounted for. The ride leader will appoint a back marker at the start of the ride. If there are no volunteers, the appointed participant will respect the ride leader s request. 8. The participant accepts that the ride they are joining is not a race in any format. 9. The participant is fully responsible for their actions while attending the ride. Neither the AVP nor ride leaders accept responsibility for the actions of the member nor the consequences of such actions. 10. Each participant is responsible for providing their own insurance protection for their participation on the ride. Any accident or injury caused by the rider s actions will be the full responsibility of the said rider. 11. Each participant will be fully responsible for any fees or costs incurred or arising from an accident either involving or caused by the rider. This includes, but is not exclusive to, fees from Police, Air Ambulance, Fire and Rescue and the Ambulance service. If the situation arises that you are not capable of making the decision to call the emergency services, the rider agrees
2 that a member of the AVP or a member of the public may call for them. In this situation, the rider still accepts the costs and consequences of such actions. 12. Each participant agrees that they are physically and mentally capable of riding the distance advertised. If, during the ride, they decide to change their route and distance, then all consequences of this action are theirs. 13. The participant agrees to wear, as a minimum, a suitably designed cycling specific helmet during the whole riding section of the ride. The AVP reserve the right to refuse a participant to join a ride with inappropriate equipment or clothing. 14. The participant confirms that the cycle they are riding for the ride and all of their equipment is of a suitable standard and state for trail/road worthiness. 15. All participants will adhere to the clubs cycling etiquette
3 Cycling Etiquette The Cycling Etiquette detailed below apply to all joining club rides organised by officials of the Axe Valley Pedallers (herein after referred to as the AVP). Be Predictable: Group riding requires extraordinary attention to cycling in a very predictable manner. Others expect you to consistently ride in a straight line, at a constant speed, and to clearly signal changes. Pedal continuously at a cadence and speed that are consistent with those around you. Communicate: Communication is a requirement of safe cycling. Participants make a positive contribution to a ride when they provide respectful feedback, reminders and instructive dialogue regarding cycling etiquette and safety. It is incumbent on all of us to offer courteous input regarding mistakes and riding habits that are dangerous. Change Positions Correctly: If you want to pass, do so on the right and say, On your right! to warn the cyclists ahead that you are passing. Sprinting around the group while a car is trying to pass is dangerous. Announce Hazards: When riding in a group many cyclists may not have a good view of the road surface ahead because of the riders in front of them. It is important to indicate hazards by pointing to them and by shouting Hole! or Glass! or Rock! etc. As cars approach shout, Car back! or Car up! and then quickly move into single file as far to the right as is reasonable. Watch the Pace: A group ride, by definition, is designed to accommodate a range of abilities. Although it is natural for groups to form, no one should be intentionally dropped. When riding near others, adjust your speed to maintain your position and help keep the group together. Resist the temptation at the front of the group to speed up; maintain a constant tempo or level of effort. Likewise, if an individual or the paceline is surging, say, Easy! to moderate the pace. It may be best to let those that are surging to go. Supplies: As a member of the club you are required to carry enough food and drink with you for the duration of the ride. You are also expected to carry all the required tools necessary to be able to perform the usual roadside repairs. It is recommended that 2 spare tubes are carried on all rides. Keep the Group Informed: If you decide to leave the group and ride on your own, inform the ride leader, or another rider, so that people don t waste time looking for you. Move Fully Off the Road When You Stop: Insure individual and group safety, and do not interfere with traffic. Leave a Gap for Cars: When riding up hills or on narrow roads where you are impeding faster traffic, leave a gap between every four to five bicycles so that motorists can take advantage of shorter passing intervals. If five or more vehicles accumulate behind the group, pull over at the next safe pull out, and allow the vehicles to pass.
4 Autumn & Winter Riding: Riding etiquette requires that during Autumn & Winter, the participant s cycle is fitted with at least a rear mudguard and, for all evening rides, good working front & rear lights. Never Leave a Rider Behind: The AVP has the ethos that we never leave a rider behind. A back marker will be appointed to ensure no rider is left alone. Where a ride breaks into sections, the ride leader will ensure all know where the regrouping points will be and will place participants on junctions to ensure those following do not miss turns. Each rider also should accept responsibility for looking out for their fellow riders and keep the ride leader advised of any incidents that arise, as it is easy to get separated during a long ride. Provide Camaraderie and Support: Remember we are a social club. Watch out for your fellow cyclist before, during and after the ride. Help make newcomers feel welcome by introducing yourself. Don t immediately ride off to join up with your old cycling buddies. Instead, spend a portion of the ride with the new cyclist.
