YORKSHIRE RIDER INFORMATION PACK
Welcome Welcome to the first year of our new Yorkshire100 bike ride. Thank you for entering we are delighted that you have chosen to participate in this event and by doing so help to raise money to help us look after the many animals in our care. This Info Pack has been put together to provide you with all you should need to know about the ride, so please do take time to familiarize yourself with the information. At the RSPCA York Animal Home we help hundreds of animals each year dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits and other small furry animals and birds, plus hedgehogs and wild birds in our wildlife unit. Many of whom have been abused, neglected, abandoned or are simply unwanted. We successfully rehabilitate and re-home on average 500 animals each year, but we need your help to enable us to provide our much needed services. We hope that you enjoy your day in the saddle and that you will be able to support us in this way again next year the event date for your diary is Sunday, September 22 nd. Val Hogg Yorkshire100 Event Manager RSPCA York, Harrogate & District Branch

So please do not attempt to park there. Please also do not attempt to drive down James Way and park outside the Sports Centre, or in the bays along it as they are for official use only. Registration Registration for those of you who have already entered online, as well as for on the day entrants, will take place in the Athletic Pavilion near the Sports Centre (please see attached map the Pavilion is shown in red). If for any reason you are unable to complete the ride and return home without coming to the Finish please also ring the Event Control number to advise us of the situation so that we aren t looking for you! There are plenty of toilets and changing facilities available for your use. There are also a few lockers in the Sports Centre you may use you will need a 1 coin. Start Times Riders will be set off in small groups of about 20 at a time. Please see the times below to note your chosen route start time. If you are on the Cat s Whiskers or Bunny Hop routes and set off in advance of these times we cannot guarantee that all the feed stations will be fully ready when you arrive. If you are inexperienced or new to cycling, or maybe just a slow cyclist, then we recommend that you start early in your group. Each group of riders will receive a short safety briefing prior to departure. Route Distance Start Dog s Dinner 101 miles am Cat s Whiskers 56 miles am Bunny Hop 33 miles am You must ride across the timing mat to activate your chip. Please note that all riders must be on the road by 9.30am to avoid the event running over. The event closes at 6pm. Feed Stations These will all be manned by our fantastic volunteers. They provide the perfect opportunity for a cuppa, something to eat and a stop for a rest, have a breather and a chat! Or just to fill up your drinks bottles. They will all be signed shortly beforehand with Feed Station Ahead plus a sign at the venue along with a sail banner.
All the feed stations are in village halls, so all have toilets. The Sand Hutton stop is not an official Feed Station for the Dog s Dinner, but if you feel like you need a stop and a drink or to re-fill a bottle then please do feel free to stop here. There may be some food bits left it all depends on how much the riders on the shorter routes have eaten! All refreshment items are provided as part of your entry you do not need to bring your own. There will be a small selection of wheat and gluten free items at each stop just ask one of the volunteers there for them. The Finish The Finish line is on James Way at the timing mat. Please dismount after crossing the mat. You will be cheered in by enthusiastic supporters and will receive your much deserved medal and goody bag. There will be the opportunity to have a free massage for those tired legs back in the Athletics Pavilion and you will also find complementary hot and cold drinks, homemade cake etc there for you to enjoy (you will need to show your rider wristband).
Supporters/Spectators Anyone supporting you is very welcome at the Start/Finish venue. Once you have all departed, or whilst they await your return, they will be able to purchase refreshments from the Athletics Pavilion, have a go on our Pony Cycles great fun for adults and children alike! relax on the grass or in the stadium stands or even browse our supporters stand for your next holiday etc. As well as cheering you in of course! The Routes All three routes: the Dog s Dinner at 101 miles, the Cat s Whiskers at 56 miles and the Bunny Hop at c33 miles, quickly leave York and head out onto the flat, mainly quiet roads in the Vale of York before reaching the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds. The routes are the same for the first 15.8 miles, when the Bunny Hop splits off from the others. The Cat s Whiskers then splits off from the Dog s Dinner route at 26.4 miles, soon after the first refreshment stop at Thixendale. The Cat s Whiskers re-joins the Dog/s Dinner route at 31 miles, just after the village of North Grimston and the two routes continue together until you arrive back at the University in Heslington. The Bunny Hop rejoins the other two routes at 18 miles, taking the same route back to the Finish. You can find links to the routes here: Dog s Dinner: (please note that it is now 101 miles, rather than the 103 originally plotted) Cat s Whiskers: Bunny Hop:

Event Signage As this is our first year for this ride we have borrowed signage from British Cycling but have supplemented it with some of our own. All signage will be YELLOW apart from after each of the shorter routes split off. So, on The Bunny Hop and Cat s Whiskers routes, after you split on to your route the signage will be RED (and we believe says Grand Depart on it!!). They will remain red except for any warning/safety signs until you rejoin the longer route(s), when all signs will be yellow again. The warning/safety signs will all be yellow on all routes. The signs on the Dog s Dinner route will all be yellow. The warning signs and some of the arrow signs will have our logo in the bottom right (so showing if a sign has been tampered with). The British Cycling signage won t have such a logo. These are some examples of our signs these will all be yellow Please note that all turns will be signed do NOT turn off the road you are on unless you see a sign telling you to do so There will be yellow signs shortly before each route split advising that it is coming up There will then be a yellow sign at each junction where the shorter routes each split off to the left
On all 3 routes, after the route splits, there will be yellow confirmations signs so that you know that you are on the correct route, for example: Event Support We want your day to run as smoothly as possible and so, in addition to your feed stations, we have arranged: Mechanical support: Mechanical support at the start, before you set off. We plan to have an experienced cyclist based at each feed station to help you with any simple mechanical issues (they may also be sent out to you if you are not near a feed station). They will also have some spare inner tubes We will have moto marshals out on the route who will carry spare inner tubes etc Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that your bike is in a roadworthy condition prior to setting off. We also recommend that you carry at least 1 spare inner tube, tyre levers etc with you. Please note that any spare inner tubes we provide are chargeable. Medical Support We will be providing medical support on the route and at the Start/Finish, provided by GCS Medical. In addition the moto marshals are all first aid trained. In the event of you or someone is involved in an accident that requires emergency services please do not hesitate to contact 999 in the first instance and then our Event Control on the number given to you at registration. If the incident is minor or not life threatening then our Event Controller will be the first person to contact. Broom Wagon There will be at least one vehicle available to pick up any riders who are unable to complete the ride for any reason. Riders who have fallen behind our event completion schedule may be moved on or directed onto a shorter route to ensure they complete the ride before it closes at 6pm. All support crews will be stood down by 6pm, so if you have any concerns about completing the ride by then please start as early as possible (within your route timings). Ride Finish When you arrive back please approach the finish with caution as there will be pedestrians and spectators about. You must ride over the timing mat to record that you have finished and your time.
If you changed routes during the ride please advise Event Control or one of our volunteers at the Finish line so that we can ensure accuracy of the times. Times are only recorded when you start and finish and not at any other point during your ride. We cannot deduct time from your overall one to account for any stops you make. We will advise you of provisional rider times and where you can see them the day after the ride. IMPORTANT If you decide not to complete the ride and do not return to the Finish, you MUST advise Event Control on to let us know that you are safe and accounted for. Cycle Jersey If you haven t already ordered your Yorkshire100 cycle jersey, although it s now too late to get one in time for the ride, please see the links below. They cost 40 each and 5 from the sale of each jersey will be donated to us. p.asp p.asp We wish you a safe and enjoyable ride and thank you once again for choosing to ride the Yorkshire100 and so help animals in need. We hope to see you again next year the date is Sunday, September 22 nd. If you would like to know more about the charity you are supporting by taking part in this event please see Thank you!
Appendix 1: Guide to Safe Cycling Event Rules: All riders must display their chipped rider number on their bike and wear the wristband. Riders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult during the event. Each group of riders will receive a safety briefing before being set off at the start. The wearing of helmets (conforming to CE Standards EN1078) is mandatory for all riders. So, no helmet means no ride. Road safety There are no closed roads on the ride, so you must ride safely at all times and be aware of other road users. Below are some tips for staying safe on the road: Obey the Highway Code at all times. Stop at all junctions. Never ride more than two abreast. Ride single file on single track roads and steep descents Keep a safe distance between you and the rider in front. Do not use headphones whilst cycling. When turning off a main road, check the road behind you and signal your intentions clearly. Riding in a group Riding in a group is efficient, energy-saving and fast. Riding close behind another bike will allow you to draft (sit in the slipstream of the rider ahead) which reduces your wind resistance, thereby saving you lots of energy and effort. Take it in turns with other riders to sit at the front of the group to help each other. There is a technique, so it is definitely worth getting it right. The key rules are: Follow a straight course sudden changes in direction cause crashes and make for nervous riders in the group. Signal any potential hazards or obstructions to the group behind (see below for more details) Look ahead of you regularly when riding in a group, not just at the wheel in front this gives you time to react to things and anticipate. Don t brake suddenly this avoids the concertina effect. Also, the less you brake, the less you have to accelerate. This maximises energy conservation. Don t overlap wheels with the riders in front leave about 1 to ½ metre gap between you and the rider in front. If you do overlap, wheels can touch and if this happens it is very hard to keep it upright. Most importantly, look out for other riders around you and they should look out for you. Ride smoothly and stay relaxed. Staying safe: When riding in a group, those at the front take a degree of responsibility to be the eyes and ears of the rest of the group. There are a few phrases and hand signals which are all you need to let people know what s going on. Calling out: Use the following basic call outs/signals to communicate with other cyclists when riding in a group:
Car back There is a vehicle behind, let it pass. Car up Vehicle up ahead, let it pass. Single Out The group needs to go into single file. Easy When called from the front it signals that you need to start slowing down - because of traffic lights or a junction for example. Directions Not every change in direction obviously, but when turning onto another road call right or left. Holes Used to point out potholes, drains, any other hole in the road. This is one of the most important calls when in a group as riding through potholes can cause punctures and injuries. It is a good idea to accompany this call with a hand signal, pointing towards the hole so your fellow riders know where exactly to avoid. Appendix 2: Route Specific Safety Information The route has been subjected to a full and thorough risk assessment with the safety and enjoyment of riders paramount at all times. Where deemed necessary marshals will be positioned at certain points to help advise cyclists. Please note the marshals do not have the power to stop traffic and are not there to cross you over a road. Make sure you take responsibility for yourself when crossing junctions and only do so where safe. Appendix 3: Bike Maintenance Keeping your bike clean and in good working order is essential to help to prevent mechanical difficulties, accidents and hopefully stop you being stranded in the middle of nowhere! Tyres must be in good condition and inflated correctly - the psi values will be marked on the tyres. It is a very good idea to learn how to change a punctured inner tube yourself Brake blocks should be equally spaced over the wheel and not worn down past the wear line - if in doubt, change them. Brake and gear cables should be free from rust and not frayed - if in doubt, have them checked at a bike shop. Seat and headset clamps should be tightened to avoid movement. Wheels should be securely fastened to the bike frame with no movement. The drive chain should be in good condition and not worn - again, a bike shop can help you check. After cleaning your bike and chain, remember to lubricate the chain again afterwards to stop it seizing or snapping - specialist lubricant can be purchased at all bike shops. Ideally have your bike fully serviced at a bike shop just prior to the event. It is your responsibility to ensure that your bike is in good working order before the Yorkshire100 event.
Appendix 4: Campus Map
Appendix 5: Sports Centre/Athletics Stadium Map You will park in the 22 Acres Sports Field across the road and then head across to us. Registration is in the Athletics Pavilion shown in red.
