MATCH #2 REPORT RESULTS FROM MATCHES HELD MAY 16-17, 2009 KEN BRUCKLACHER PRESIDENT "THE CLUB IS ORIGINAL AND THE WIND IS UNIQUE" 2009 WORLD OPEN JULY 11TH & 12TH IMPORTANT REMINDERS If you want to test your long-range shooting skills against some of the best shooters in the country register now for your place in the event. Shooters will compete in Light Gun and Heavy Gun classes for prizes including scopes, actions, and barrels. In addition, the club will give $1, CASH to anyone breaking the match time current Light Class or Heavy Class Ten-Shot Benchrest World Record during the event. (Award limited to person shooting smallest group of the weekend.) For more information you may log-on to to download an application for registration. The schedule of events will be: Saturday Morning Light Gun Match One; Saturday Afternoon Heavy Gun Match One; Sunday Morning Heavy Gun Match Two; Sunday Afternoon Light Gun Match Two. Scheduled for June 5-7 participants will enjoy 1 evening and 2 full days of intensive training under the guidance of some of our top shooters and gunsmiths. For $200 students will learn precise techniques of reloading, load development, gun cleaning and gun set-up. Participants will spend time behind the trigger and in the pits the final day. Our members will provide the rifles and components for the class. A steak dinner is included in the seminar price on Saturday evening. Currently 26 individuals have been registered for the Benchrest School; we will take up to 10 additional reservations. We raised $ which was donated to the club s range improvement fund. A special thank you to Melissa Wagner for her efforts in organizing the sale. Spring Cleaning Clean-out your basements, closets and cupboards and donate those items for the SILENT AUCTION to be held during the World Open, July 11 th and 12th. All proceeds will be donated to the club s range improvement fund. All items should be available for display on or before Friday evening, July 10 th. If you plan to assist with the Benchrest School, but are unable to attend the meeting, please contact Frank Grappone at frankgrappone@sbcglobal.net. SHOOTER S CORNER Permanent Marker on Bullets? By Jason Baney Did you ever have 11 shots on a record target even though you knew you only shot 10? Ever have your test groups overlap and cause confusion while trying to sort out which load made which bullet hole in the paper? There is a really easy solution that comes in handy for this, and other load-testing applications as well. Permanent markers. One Williamsport shooter has been doing a variation of this for some time (with a type of paint). The permanent marker, when applied ahead of the ogive on the bullet of a loaded round will transfer a visible color ring to the paper as it passes thru the target. Nearly any color works, and you can even mix colors (half one color, half another), to make different combinations. Of course results are best when the shots land on clean white/tan paper and not in the black/blue ink, but there is also a trick to sort this out when it happens. This fix was discovered at last year s 1000 Yard Benchrest School that was held at the Williamsport Club. A cotton swab with 70% alcohol, when touched to the bullet hole will pull the marker s color from the paper. This way you can see what color went thru the hole even when you hit blue or black areas on the target. As you can see, these colored bullet holes would be quite handy when trying to talk yourself out of a cross-fire situation. This can also be used during load development to separate different loads on the same target to avoid any confusion with overlapping groups. Another use for this trick is that it can allow load testing at 1000 yards without the need for a spotter in the pits to plot shots. Some might be concerned that the marker on the bullets may cause accuracy/precision issues. Well, if there are any negative effects, I have not seen them. Every 4 and 5 group that I have shot in the last 3 years has been covered in permanent marker. Next time you head to the range, don t forget your permanent markers!
