1 THE ORIGINAL PENNSYLVANIA 1000 YARD BENCHREST CLUB, INC. MATCH #6 REPORT RESULTS FROM MATCHES HELD JULY 25-26, 2009 KEN BRUCKLACHER PRESIDENT "THE CLUB IS ORIGINAL AND THE WIND IS UNIQUE" SHOOTER S CORNER BY JASON BANEY Bench Technique: Let it slide, or hang on tight? Once you develop a good, accurate load that performs the best in your rifle, there is still one thing (at least) left to do before heading to a match. Each rifle may prefer a different method of holding it during firing. Depending on balance, weight and other factors, some rifles may prefer free recoil, while some may prefer being held tightly with both hands, or possibly something in between. Shooter ability and influence on the rifle (when holding it) may also cause a rifle to shoot best when held one way or another. The only way to test this is by shooting the rifle several different ways. Try shooting 3 to 5 shot groups at your target distance (or the longest distance you can find) using several different holds. For long range rifles, this should probably be shot from at least yards, further if you can. Normally, I will try the following: 3 shots free recoil (FR), 3 shots with only the shooting hand holding on to the grip of the stock (1HH), and lastly, 3 shots using one hand on the grip and one hand hanging off of the forend (2HH). Ideally this is best done round-robin, but that can be difficult to remember how you are supposed to hold the rifle for each shot. If there is not a clear best choice, further testing may be warranted. Try firing more shots per group or stretching out the distance. You could work other grips in there as well. You could test a 2 hand grip where you actually pull down on the forend, or even try holding the rifle with only the thumb and middle finger. Whatever shooting grips you try, your rifle is likely to show a preference for one method. This test is what convinced me to try free-recoil with a 1000 yard light gun. The bottom line is: do whatever makes the rifle shoot its best. Copyright AccurateShooter.com 6mmbr.com All Rights Reserved. Chronister, Jr. By his son-in-law Ken Hoke I'm married to Pattie, Earl's # 2 of 4 daughters. I met Earl the evening of our first date in 1969 at his home in York. True to form he was sitting in his shop loading bullets and proceeded to "interrogate" me on my intentions which, by the way, were completely honorable (a man loading bullets with numerous firearms literally "littering" the shop seemed to prompt that response). Regardless of that auspicious occasion, over the years I learned many things from this man. However, three things about him was prominent in his life...his love for shooting, hunting, and the Original PA 1000 Yard Benchrest Club (the latter easily was at the top of the list). If you knew Earl I'm sure you would say he was like the wind at the club...unique. In my research for articles since his passing I came upon a blog where numerous shooters remarked about Earl and his eagerness to extend a welcome to new shooters at the range and freely share information at any time. I recall many times when Pattie and I lived in York in the 70's and 80's that we'd visit at the house and it was never surprising to hear him talking to a shooter on the phone who was in Australia or Germany or Kansas City. It was always about shooting...about loads, coefficients, fire forming brass, the best glass, or any other shooting subject. These conversations would literally last for hours on end. He just loved to shoot and to "shoot the breeze". Over the years I would occasionally go to the club website and read the newsletters. What I have found is that your club continues to not only survive but thrive. I particularly have been impressed by your instituting a yearly gathering to teach beginners how to get started in shooting. This is tremendous and I applaud your efforts. It's the right thing to do - to educate - and where better to do it than at the club and, most importantly, to do it with experts...and I mean EXPERTS...in the field. I hunted with Earl out of his camp in Potter County and in Canada. I hunted and formed friendships with quite a few of your members namely Paul DeWalt, Rick Taylor, Bob Bitner, Bob Linn, and quite a few others. It was never a surprise to be at his camp the second week of buck season and have one or two "shooters" just show up (usually at supper time), be invited to stay, have them accept, and go out on the ridge with us the next day. There apparently was a rumor that each and every one of those guys had to sign a document (and get it notarized that day) stating that they would never mention where these super secret spots were located to anyone, including spouses, for Earl would explain that if they did there COULD be a "scoring error" posted at any of the shoots in the coming shooting season. You may have heard other rumors over the years that Earl placed blindfolds on a few guys as we loaded up the next morning before going out on the ridge only to have those blindfolds removed after we were set up. I can honestly attest that, yes, there is some validity to that rumor but, then again, you know how hunters lie sometimes. Needless to say each and every one of these guys were class acts. They all had those same three things in common...shooting, hunting, and brag on "the club". We ended many a day after hunting on the ridge at DeWalt's and Bitner's Camp 270 in northern Cameron County eating pork and sauerkraut (Bitner was a daggone good cook) and then talk shooting and a little about hunting and a little more about shooting and then try and figure out which ridge to hunt tomorrow. I'm sure no one would believe me but, truthfully, we could only get Earl to shut up when Bitner got in his bunk and starting snoring. That's when the rest of us could get Earl in the Bronco and get back to his camp for some sleep. The next day we would start all over again. In retrospect it is my true feeling that the sport of shooting and just the chance to hold a world record extended Earls life many, many years after suffering his heart attack in the sixties. He often told the story of meeting DeWalt and Bitner on a ridge near Rattlesnake Hollow in Southern Potter County. Before they departed that afternoon, DeWalt and Bitner told Earl about a bunch of guys talking about putting a 1000 yard range over near Williamsport. That's all it took. That chance meeting, an "extended invitation", and the result was a few shoots won (ok, a lot of shoots won), a World Record, but more importantly a lot of friendships and a few disagreements, but mostly friendships. The "club" WAS that important to him.

General shooting hours are Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and (non-match) Sundays from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Also, any member who desires use of the range should contact Larry Plants the preceding evening at Ken asked that all members adhere to this policy. There was further discussion about NRA membership. It was decided that the club was founded not to have any requirements of having to belong to another organization. It is strongly recommended that members support the NRA but membership is NOT REQUIRED to shoot or belong to our club. Bud Williams is going to check into see if the grant for the pit work can be gotten without all members belonging to the NRA. Updates will be provided as they are available.
