1 SUMMARY OF MAJOR CHANGES 2016 EDITION SAFETY ACTIVITY CHECKPOINTS SEPTEMBER 2016 INTRODUCTION The 2016 edition of the Safety Activity Checkpoints publication saw many changes from the 2015 edition. This document is meant to provide a summary of the major or significant changes between the two documents. No attempt has been made to point out grammatical, stylistic or format changes (including changes or updates to links), unless they significantly altered the meaning of a paragraph or section. In addition, every attempt has been made to ensure that the links throughout the document are correct, functioning and up-to-date. However, please be aware that links will change from time to time, so there is no guarantee that all links will remain active until the next edition. LIST OF CHANGES Caution / Unapproved Activities List 1. This section has been replaced with a section entitled Understanding Which Activities Are Not Allowed this includes the updated list as well as other provisions from the Risk Management at Girl Scouts Councils guide. You will find this new section at the end of Girl Scout Safety Guidelines. 2. Go-Carting as an activity has been removed from the unapproved activity list, however still requires Council level approval. Camping 1. Firearms Caution - The phrase Girls 12 Years has been replaced with: Cadettes 2. Prepare for Camping - Recommended Camping Gear - The phrase: reapply every two hours has been added to the note about 3. Prepare for Camping - Travel Camping In 3 rd and 4 th bullet point, some requirements for drivers have been deleted. 4. On the Day of Camping In 9 th bullet point, the phrase: use a bear-proof container to store food or if allowed and appropriate has been inserted into the advice on avoiding animals at the campsite. Canoeing 1. Age Appropriateness The phrase: Canoeing is not allowed for Girl Scout Daisies has been replaced by: The grade level of participants is dependent on the facility and conditions, with instructor guidance. 2. Required Canoeing Gear Language pertaining to Emergency Survival Packet was moved down to Recommended Canoeing Gear.
2 3. Recommended Canoeing Gear - The phrase: reapply every two hours has been added to the note about 4. Recommended Canoeing Gear The phrase: duct tape is added to the list of items in the Emergency Survival Packet 5. Prepare for Canoeing Ensure participants are able to swim The phrase: If this is not possible, presume all participants are non-swimmers has been added to this section. 6. Prepare for Canoeing A new checkpoint has been added, entitled Select a Safe Canoe Site 7. Prepare for Canoeing Transport Canoes Safely The sentence: Drivers must have prior experience hauling trailers has been added to this section. Geocaching Hiking 1. Required Gear GPS Device The phrase: (bring a compass and map of the area for emergencies) has been added to this section. 2. Prepare for Geocaching Practice Safe Geocaching & Geocaching Know-How for Girls References to Leave No Trace and Garbage Removal added to these sections. 1. Firearms Caution has been deleted from this section. 2. Required Gear A new checkpoint has been added, stating: Designated adult has a working cell-phone for emergencies 3. Required Gear A new checkpoint has been added, entitled Emergency Survival Kit. 4. Recommended Gear - A new checkpoint has been added, reading: Designated adult has a working cell-phone for GPS capabilities, if needed 5. Prepare for Hiking A sentence reading: Let them know exactly where you will be hiking has been added to the first checkpoint. 6. Prepare for Hiking A sentence reading: Be sure girls and adults have a good understanding of how to practice the Leave No Trace principles on the hike has been added to the fifth checkpoint. 7. Prepare for Hiking A sentence reading: A risk management plan is completed and left with the at home contact has been added to the ninth checkpoint. 8. On the Day of Hiking A sentence reading: Girls take proper precautions in areas where poisonous plants or snakes or ticks are prevalent has been added to the fourth checkpoint. 9. Recommended Gear A new checkpoint has been added, reading: Sunscreen (SPF of at least 15) and lip balm Kayaking 1. Required Gear The checkpoint regarding Safety Helmets has been moved to from Recommended Gear to Required Gear. 2. Required Gear The checkpoint regarding Emergency Sound Device has been moved to from Recommended Gear to Required Gear. 3. Prepare for Kayaking Select a Safe Kayak Site The phrase: avoided when possible, and crossed carefully when necessary has been added to this checkpoint.
3 4. Prepare for Kayaking Transport Kayaks Safely The sentence: Drivers must have prior experience hauling trailers has been added to this section. Orienteering 1. Introduction The sentence: Be certain to practice Leave No Trace while orienteering has been added to the introduction. 2. Firearms Caution - The phrase: Girls 12 Years has been replaced with Cadettes 3. Recommended Gear - The phrase: apply every two hours has been added to the note about 4. Prepare for Orienteering A sentence reading: Practice Leave No Trace skills before participating in Orienteering and pick up garbage you find along the way, be sure not to trample vegetation and be aware of wildlife has been added to the first checkpoint. Outdoor Cooking 1. Required Gear The phrase: and cutting boards has been to the checkpoint regarding knives. 2. Recommended Gear The phrase: Three dish pans for dishwashing, along with has been added to the checkpoint regarding biodegradable soap. 3. Recommended Gear A new checkpoint has been added, reading: Rope for dunk bag line 4. Prepare for Outdoor Cooking A new checkpoint has been added, regarding Leader/Instructor Knowledge. 5. Prepare for Outdoor Cooking Primitive Campsites The sentence: Where necessary, hang food at least 10 feet high from a rope stretched between two trees has been deleted and replaced by the sentence Check local regulations to find out if a bear-proof canister is required. 6. Water Purification Tips The sentence: If over 6500 ft. in elevation, boil water for 3 minutes has been added to the first bullet under the second checkpoint in this section. 7. Dishwashing Tips The phrase: and dispose of properly in waste bags has been added to the first bullet under the first checkpoint in this section. Rowboating Sailing 2. Prepare for Rowboating This section has been extensively revised please review the new version. 1. Recommended Gear A new checkpoint has been added, reading: Boat shoes, closed-toe and nonslip hiking/sport sandals with heel strap, or water socks or shoes (no flip-flops). 2. Recommended Gear A new checkpoint has been added, regarding Emergency Survival Packet. 3. Prepare for Sailing The third checkpoint has been extensively revised please review the new version. 4. Prepare for Sailing A new checkpoint has been added, entitled Transport sailboats safely

Sledding Tobogganing and Snow-Tubing 1. Required Gear The phrase: mittens or warm gloves has been added to the first checkpoint. 2. Required Gear - The checkpoint regarding Sunglasses has moved from Recommended Gear to Required Gear. 3. Recommended Gear - The phrase: apply every two hours has been added to the note about Snorkeling Snowshoeing 1. Required Gear - The checkpoint regarding Sunglasses has moved from Recommended Gear to Required Gear. 2. Prepare for Snowshoeing The sixth checkpoint has been extensively revised please review the new version. Spelunking/Caving 1. Caving Gear Required A sentence reading: It is recommended that a disposable liner, such as a shower cap or surgical cap, be worn underneath the helmet to protect against the spread of head lice has been added to the checkpoint regarding helmets. 2. Prepare for Caving The seventh checkpoint has been extensively revised please review the new version. Stand-Up Paddle-boarding 2. Recommended Gear A sentence reading: Note: Whitewater SUP is not permitted without specialized training from a certified instructor and permission from your council has been deleted from the ninth bullet, and moved to the Prepare for Stand-Up Paddle-boarding section. 3.
