THE WINNERS COLLECTION edina public schools 2014 spring poetry contest Ian Katan Maria Linder Karl Otness Arvind Veluvali Lara Swanson Divya Chandriah
K-5 TIE FOR FIRST PLACE Ian Katan Highlands, 4th grade Spring Amazing to watch tiny ants Bear cubs are born Clovers bloom with luck Ducks in your backyard Enjoying the air Flowing rivers Great views High hikes Incredible flowers Joy to all Kilometers of running races Love is in the air Moss smells merry Noisy birds sing Oh look, a tulip Pretty animals Questioning, why is it still raining? Roses are red Sports are regular Together forever Undescribable laughter Very fun With your family X-raying? Hopefully not You experience it all Zing of a baseball
K-5 TIE FOR FIRST PLACE Maria Linder Normandale, 5th grade Let it be Spring It's been many a day Since the stars have been away No light, no shine Just snow divine Let the sun be seen Let the snow be off the land clean Let the Ice crack Let us run on the track Let the days be longer Let the nights be shorter Let the bear wake up Let the sun come up Let it be spring.
6-12 FIRST PLACE Karl Otness Edina High School, 12th grade Terza Rima for Spring Successor to dark winter s endless chill, With budding leaf and fragrant flower you come, Your gift each seed s bright promise to fulfill. When winter s cold has left us blank and numb, Your warmth restores our hope and grateful cheer, To winter s grimness we will not succumb. Spring s gentle rains and breezes have no peer, They far surpass the gales that winter brings, Because of spring dark winter holds no fear. Each year the spring so faithful to us sings, Its cheerful songs of life and warmth and sun, Bright songs that bring contentment to all things. Each year the battle with dark winter s won, When spring arrives to greet us without fail, And tell old winter that its time is done. Oh banish winter s dreary snows so pale, That spring its own bright colors may unveil.
6-12 HONORABLE MENTION Arvina Veluvali Edina High School, 10th grade Channels of water Carve their way Through hard-packed earth, Twisting like snakes. A bird chirps, Breaking the bright, clear silence of morning. The flock has returned. Thousands of green needles Pierce upward out of the mud. Morning dew Clings to each blade, Glistening like diamonds. The leaves have returned to the trees, Waving in the breeze like so many hands. Greeting the girl Who splashes in puddles.
COMMUNITY & STAFF FIRST PLACE Lara Swanson Valley View Middle School, 7th grade social studies teacher Spring She cowers behind blustery storms And shivers beneath winter s refuse She peeks out with a hint of green And teases us with wisps of warmth When she makes her debut We welcome the intrusion With open arms we soak her in She woos us as we fill our lungs With the heady perfume of lilacs The darkness of winter memories Slips away as we surrender To the pleasant amnesia of spring
COMMUNITY & STAFF FIRST PLACE Divya Chandriah Edina Public Schools parent Spring Is Here Spring is here, spring is here, What fun it could be? Dreamt of it day and night Thinking of how glee it could be, Spring is here, spring is here With all the beautiful colors it could bear, Making all of them happy, This doesn t exclude the birds being chirpy Spring is here, spring is here Making the flowers as beautiful as it could be, Marking the new beginning of the year With a fresh and positive attitude to gear.
special thanks to the 100 students, staff and community members who submitted poems for the inaugural EPS spring poetry contest additional thanks to the following for their help with the contest: Wild Rumpus Magers & Quinn Cheryl Gunness Community Education Community & Adult Involvement Manager Laurie Holland Concord Elementary Media Specialist Sara Swenson Edina High School Media Specialist
