1 The Patriot Press Dr. Chris Ferguson, Principal July/August 2011 Volume 1 Issue 1 A Note from our Principal Powdersville is about to embark into a new era. For the first time, Powdersville residents will have the convenience, excitement, and benefits of having a high school in their own community. From the bright lights and pageantry of high school football, to the sparkling new facilities, to the hometown feel of a smaller school, will transform our area. As the school year approaches, I am working with the faculty to prepare for our first year. The question most often asked is, Will the school be ready? All indications from the construction leaders are that we will open on time. As with any new building, there will be work continuing through much of the first year. Cosmetic work on both the exterior and interior of the building will continue; nonetheless, the building will pass inspection and be ready for students by the first day of school (August 16 th ). Our goal for the first year of is to ensure that we offer the same quality instruction to prepare students for the future as that of Wren and Palmetto. To that end, we have a tremendous faculty that is eager to work with our students. The level of excitement of this group is unmatched. Our teachers are putting in work throughout the summer to prepare. Overall, we are blessed with hard-working and dedicated students, a tremendously supportive community, a great faculty and facilities that are second to none. I believe that over the next few years, will become one of the best in the state. Don t Buy em, Don t Wear em In March of 2011, a group of parents, teachers, students, and community members came together to discuss the dress code for. On many items, EVERYONE agreed. On some, we had to compromise, but overall, I believe that we came up with an overall dress code with which everyone could agree. 1. SAGGING PANTS THAT REVEAL A STUDENT S UNDERCLOTHING As a group, this was the #1 issue and one to which I will pay close attention. There was complete agreement that pants which droop, sag, or are cut in such a way that a student s underclothing can be seen ARE PROHIBITIED. A student who wears pants that reveal his/her underclothing will be sent to the office to contact a parent. 2. SHORTS AND SKIRT LENGTHS The committee agreed that 3 inches above the knee was an acceptable length for shorts and skirts. An index card is a good measuring device for this standard. 3. BODY PIERCINGS AND UNNATURAL HAIR COLOR In attempt to allow for some variation, our decision was to word the policy in an attempt to discourage students from dying all or most of their hair to an unnatural color (green, blue, purple, etc.), or from large piercings in the lips, ears, or eyebrows. We will allow feathers and would ask that parents attempt to monitor hair color to prevent this issue from becoming a distraction. A SMALL stud in the nose will be acceptable; however, lip, eyebrow, and tongue piercings are not. 4. SHIRTS For boys, shirts should not reveal the under arm area and cannot be see-through. For girls, NO midriffexposing, backless, or low-cut clothing will be allowed. Girls tops should not reveal any cleavage, should meet the three finger rule for shoulder straps, and should cover the undergarment.
2 If you have any questions about a particular item of clothing or particular part of the code, please feel free to call Dr. Chris Ferguson at PVHS Student Dress Code Proper dress is an important aspect of school life; therefore, each student is encouraged to be well groomed and neat in order to make the best possible impression on other students, teachers, and guests. No student s body hygiene or clothing will be allowed to interfere with other students educational process. Students are expected to dress appropriately for school, and anyone who violates these standards must make immediate correction of the dress code and shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action. 1. Clothing must not be revealing. a. Shorts, skirts, and dresses can be no more than 3 above the knee. b. Any clothing that displays the midriff, sides, or back is not permissible dress. This includes, but is not limited to, halter tops, tank tops, midriff tops, spaghetti strap tops, and backless dresses. c. Clothing should cover all undergarments including bra straps. No low-cut shirts/blouses exposing excessive cleavage are allowed. d. A full shirt covering the skin must be worn underneath mesh tops, including jerseys. e. Shirts for male students must have sleeves. Female students may wear sleeveless tops as long as they meet the three-finger rule. 2. Pants, shorts, skirts, and dresses must meet certain guidelines. a. Leggings are only allowed if they are worn with a dress or skirt that meets dress code (3 above the knee). b. Pants and shorts must be worn at the waist even if regular shorts are worn underneath. Sagging pants will not be tolerated. c. Pants/shorts must not have written messages on the rear. d. No pajamas, bathrobes, or other bedtime apparel should be worn to school. e. Pants or shorts cannot have holes above the knee unless completely covered by a permanent patch. 3. Student clothing, accessories, shoes, and personal items are prohibited at school and school functions if they contain writing, pictures, or any other emblems/messages which: a. display profanity, sexual content, violence, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco; b. advocate racial or ethnic prejudice; c. create disunity among the student body (i.e. confederate flag); or d. contain gang-related symbols or insignia. 4. Headwear (i.e. hat, cap, bandana, visor, hoodie or sunglasses) must not be worn or seen inside the school building or it will be confiscated. 5. Shoes must be worn at all times. Bedroom slippers are not appropriate for school footwear. 6. Jewelry and accessories that could pose a safety hazard or disrupt instruction are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to, body/tongue piercings, earrings that enlarge the earlobe, studded bracelets or belts, handcuffs, chains (including chains on wallets), and any jewelry that disfigures/distorts the body. 7. Hair and make-up should be natural and non-distracting. The following are not allowed: a. Unnatural hair color (i.e. orange or blue) b. Colored hair spray c. Face painting d. Spiked hair or Mohawks e. Exaggerated make-up and unusual cosmetic colors such as black lipstick 8. No long, trench-style, coats are allowed. 9. There should be no electronics in use during school hours. 10. Special events (proms, dances, graduation, and awards programs) are considered dress up events. Appropriate attire will be worn, or students will be denied admission or participation. 11. No apparel that represents the name or mascot of another school that competes with Powdersville in athletics, musical, or academic events may be worn. The administration reserves the right to make any decision pertaining to dress not covered above.
