3 President s Column Congratulations go out to Steven Pardieck who ended up the National Pistol Championships at Camp Perry by placing 2 nd overall in the Police Master Class and to Franklin Dessuit who ended up 1 st Place Civilian Expert. The National Rifle Matches are a little more complicated in that they have many more overall matches: Rimfire Sporter Tactical - Pete Yarbro Co-winner; Service Rifle President s Hundred - Dave Schnelle, Brad Diehl, Pete Yarbro; National Trophy Individual - Michael King picked up leg points; Roosevelt Match - Meghann Beaver 1 st place Junior; Garand Match - Brad Diehl 1 st place. To all of you, congratulations and you certainly show that Indiana might not be too big but we turn out quality shooters! ISRPA conducted the Across the Course State Championship at Camp Atterbury in August and I did help set up the range before the match. Sue Mogle had made arrangements with CMP to bring electronic targets to Atterbury for the event. Having to be visible from at least 600 yards the targets had to be BIG (compared to pistol targets). There were 10 targets in all and it actually took a fork lift to set them in position. The advantage of using the system is that rather than spending all day to fire the various matches and having personnel in the pits to do the scoring and target pulling the shooting can be completed in a matter of 3-4 hours with no one working in the pits and the scoring being done electronically. It was very interesting to at least see some of what will become the future way to shoot all types of matches including pistol where a 2 1/2 square target frame will be needed instead of a 6 square one for rifle! * * * I recently read the obituary of Capt. Herbert W. McBride who passed away in 1933 and was a member of the Indiana National Guard and as the obituary stated He was the organizer of the Indiana State Rifle Association. Although no date was given, from other references in the article I would assume the year to be between 1904 and If anyone has further information please let me know. I later spoke to John Obst who was the first President of the ISRPA which was actually officially formed and chartered in John told me that talks had been going on for a few years about forming one association for both rifle and the pistol. That s a brief story of ISRPA s humble beginnings; and the reason the Association is what it is today is because of you the members and officers who over the years have put countless hours into doing what you do well and letting others do what they do well. Thanks to all of you and keep up the good work! Oct - Nov - Dec * * * I would like to salute and thank ISRPA s Gold Star Members, they are: Bartholomew Hott, Douglas McNaughton, Matthew Prine, Joseph Seagrave and William B. Thomas Jr. Sincere thanks and congratulations to all five of you! The cost of becoming a Gold Star Member is $1,000; however that cost is reduced by the amount you paid for your present membership. For example, if you paid $375 for a life membership the total cost to you would be $625. ISRPA s Bronze, Silver, and Gold Star Memberships are similar to NRA s Endowment, Patron and Benefactor Memberships. * * * November 3 rd is ISRPA s Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet to be held at the Riviera Club in Indianapolis. In conjunction with that, the name of the lucky winner of the Henry 1 of 1000 Rifles will be drawn. In case you haven t bought a ticket yet you can either send an to info@isrpa.org to request tickets or purchase them at the Banquet. Remember there are only 200 tickets printed and the price is $20 per ticket. * * * November 6 th is Election Day. I know you hear this all the time this is the most important election ever but all of them are. If we don t take time to exercise our right to vote then we must be complacent with whatever happens. You know as well as I do, that if a certain party controls this country our 2 nd Amendment rights will be gutted to say the least. Get out and VOTE! Take someone, preferably a youngster, to the range before the weather gets too bad. Jerry Wehner, President, ISRPA

7 LEGISLATIVE REPORT By Bill Dowden, Legislative Director The Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association (ISRPA) is by no means a partisan political organization we encourage our members to support candidates for public office who support unequivocally the constitutionally protected inherent right of Hoosiers to keep and bear arms. We know there are Democrat and Republican officeholders in Indiana who agree on that regardless of party affiliation. However, in recent years, groups have formed at the national level with local chapters opposing traditional Hoosier values, such as religious liberty, life, citizens gun rights, etc. A recent Wall Street Journal front page article with the headline For Democrats, Guns Are New Litmus Test is cause for concern. With millions of dollars coming from such names as Bloomberg, Soros, et al, into Moms Demand Action, Everytown, Students Against Guns, Move On, Organizing for Action, and a multitude of other front groups to neuter the 2 nd Amendment, another national group has arisen with chapters here in Indiana. The new 501(c)4 group INDIVISIBLE PROJECT - was founded in 2016 by Ezra Levin and his wife Leah Greenberg for the express purpose of defeating the pro- America agenda of President Trump s administration at the local, state, and national level. The group would be advocates of a progressive (social democracy) program and support candidates for public office. Of note here in Indiana is the chapter in the 8 th Congressional District where they do all they can to disrupt meetings where Congressman Larry Bucshon, MD, will be speaking. The president of INDIVISIBLE 8 th DISTRICT EVANSVILLE is a biology teacher at the University of Southern Indiana - Edith Hardcastle. Ms. Hardcastle, with the support of the anti-gun folks, is running against the pro-2 nd Amendment incumbent State Senator Jim Tomes. Activity such as this is why it is essential that lawful gun owners in Indiana know without a doubt where a candidate for Council, Mayor, Commissioner, State Senator, State Representative, et al will stand when facing anti-2 nd Amendment protesters A very high price has been paid for our freedom and the protection of our God-given rights the least each of us can do is support and vote for men and women who don t just talk the walk, but actually walk the talk. 8 Women s Corner By Linda Levan, V-P Women of the ISRPA This is the story of four ladies who embarked on a road trip to Ohio to train privately for two days with Robert Vogel. Vogel is a professional marksman, competition shooter, and National/World champion. He is the only Law Enforcement Officer ever to win World and National Championships in the Practical Pistol Disciplines of IPSC, IDPA and USPSA. Vogel is a 3-time world champion and 24- time national champion across 3 disciplines of practical/combat shooting and has been all over the world competing and teaching. Vogel trains people who are truly serious about real-world practical shooting, whether it is for competition, LE/Military, or personal defense. all-ladies group, so of course we felt special! It was a pleasure getting to know Vogel on a more personal level. He is a tough man with a soft heart, and clearly a man who achieves his goals. Our second day of training began with a good discussion of competitive shooting versus defensive shooting. He answered that question in his video on You Tube, Field Notes Ep. 13, Competitive Shooting with Robert Vogel, Not Just a Game. Vogel strives hard to maintain a realistic approach and believes strongly the most important skill is performance when it counts. He said, it is less important what you do, and more important how you do it. Vogel stressed the need to be mentally connected. Gun handling should be second nature so that shooting becomes an automatic response to free up brain power to resolve whatever situation arises. Competitive tricked-out guns versus defensive everyday carry guns? Vogel provided this analogy: Ladies dinner: left to right: Linda Levan, Judi Pingel, Rachel Ritter, Amanda Kalman, and Robert Vogel. Vogel graciously opened his home and private range to us. The members of our group had different levels of experience, so our first day of training started out with basic drills to determine our shooting abilities. We practiced 6-shot groups (Bill drills), magazine changes, double taps versus controlled pairs, point shooting versus sighted shots, different distances and various par times. We practiced the dice drill, figure 8 around barrels, and fault line cover drills. Eight hours passed by in a blink! We were tickled when Vogel agreed to join us for dinner. He admitted it was rare for him to have an If you put a NASCAR driver in a regular car, you think he can t drive a normal car? We finished our second day a total of 1000 rounds lighter than when we started, and with a brain full of techniques and skills that we can practice at home. Regardless of the platform, an equal balance of accuracy and speed is required in all realms of practical shooting. 9 CMP KTS Electronic Targets Come to Camp Atterbury By Sue Mogle, Executive VP The ISRPA Across the Course State Championship and EIC Leg Match returned to Camp Atterbury, August Turnout was good despite the fact that it wasn t on the schedule or on anyone s radar at the beginning of the season. Indeed, the idea for bringing the ISRPA Course State Championships back to Camp Atterbury on the CMP Electronic Targets was hatched rather late in the game. But with the help of the CMP and the hard work and expertise of the CMP Target Team it all came together. A record number of shooters came out for the opportunity to shoot the match on the Electronic Targets. The Targets performed very well, with only a few issues that were easily addressed. Response to the E-Targets was overwhelmingly positive, and the advantages were obvious over the course of the weekend. Saturday started out on a damp note, but once Mother Nature was over her tantrum the rest of the weekend went smoothly. Despite a two hour interlude for rain the electronic targets allowed us to finish the match with plenty of time to fire up the grill for burgers, brats, and awards. The Leg match on Sunday completed firing before 11:30, well before the extreme heat warnings became an issue. Congratulations to Match Winner and 2018 Indiana Course State Champion Nathan Scott, (Ireland Trophy), High Service Rifle Harry Broening (Moncrief Trophy), and High Junior Meghan Beaver (Faatz Trophy). While State Champions must be Indiana residents, the Perpetual Trophies for the ISRPA State Championship Series are awarded regardless of residence. For more information go to The EIC Leg Match on Sunday went very smoothly and in record time! We had a nice constant Camp Atterbury breeze blowing that was good for about 2 1/2 minutes correction at 600 yards. Congratulations to Michael King, Match Winner (Silver Leg) and Randy Olds, Second place (Bronze Leg). A huge thank you to all who stayed around to help pack up the targets after the match! Also accomplished in record time! We owe a huge thanks to the CMP and the CMP target team for their hard work to bring the CMP traveling Targets to Camp Atterbury! ISRPA is looking forward to the 2019 Season! ISRPA Vice President Sue Mogle presents the Dan Ireland Trophy to Match Winner and ISRPA Across the Course State Champion Nathan Scott. 10 From the Front Page An interview with Jeannie Rayne Redicker, winner of the CMP Rimfire Rifle Women s Scoped Division and second in the Women s Open Sight Division Where are you from? I live on a small family farm near Vallonia, with my Husband and Dad. We crop farm and raise hogs. I have two children and five grandchildren. At what age did you first start shooting? I ve always enjoyed shooting and have shot my whole adult life, but I started learning about three position shooting six or seven years ago when I joined an organization called Revere s Riders. How did you get interested in the shooting sports and was there someone that was your mentor? I shot a rimfire sporter match one year to the day before competing at Camp Perry at a range called The Bedford Contingent Gun Range. After shooting that first rimfire sporter match, one of my friends; AJ Huffman, told me that the score I had shot would have won second place in the women s division at the Camp Perry CMP National Rifle Matches. The match was a lot of fun and I enjoyed testing my ability to shoot accurately under pressure. It was after I shot a second match, a couple months later and my scores had improved that I started taking AJ s encouragement more seriously. AJ became my coach and mentor which wasn t a big leap, since he had been my instructor and mentor with Revere s Riders as I learned how to teach rifle marksmanship myself. How do you train, how often and where do you compete? The only competitions that I participated in leading up to Camp Perry were indoor reduced matches held at Southern Indiana Rifle and Pistol Club near Georgetown. Wanting to shoot more full distance matches, the Bedford Contingent Gun Range has begun hosting sanctioned rimfire sporter matches, which I will incorporate into my training. AJ and I worked together to come up with a training plan, that was sustainable. Over the winter I would dry fire practice in my weakest position, and we d work on my mental toughness. Throughout the winter, I read books on mental preparation for competitions and did visualization of firing a shot along with actually dry firing. During dry fire practice I would stand in my kitchen and aim down the hallway to my garage door where I had placed a reduced size target. Always making sure the firearm was unloaded I would stand there, set up the shot and squeeze the trigger. Taking note of where the sights were on the target when the hammer dropped. I dry fire practiced four to five times a week. Beginning in late March, I began live fire practice outside a day or two a week, but continued to dry fire in the house. By late spring I was live fire practicing three to four times a week, but would occasionally take a few days off to keep from burning out or peaking too early. All this practice took some patience from my family. Mom wasn t readily available to watch the grandbabies, like before. The hubby had to fix and eat his supper by himself many evenings. Lots of times, I would tell my Dad good night around six, because I knew he would be in bed before I finished practicing, which usually lasted a couple hours. I kept a journal of my practice scores and thoughts on what happened during a practice session I felt was significant in my mental preparation. I shared these journal entries with AJ and we meet about once a month, so he could observe me shooting. I learned the most about my weakness when I shot in front of AJ. He brings out the worst in me, which is actually good. I felt pressure to do well, because of all the time he was donating to my goal. I didn t want to disappoint him. That pressure was very good for keeping me focused on the mechanics of firing a shot and preparing me for the pressure of a large match. As I matured as a shooter I realized though, that the only person I needed to worry about disappointing was myself. Starting in June, I switched my practice times to the morning, because that was when I was scheduled to shoot at Camp Perry. I wanted to replicate match settings with the same lighting on my targets as I would there and my home range faced north like the range at Camp Perry. Is there is any other relevant information that you would wish to include in the interview? I enjoyed testing my ability to shoot accurately under pressure and had never thought I was more than your average shooter. But what I was soon to learn from AJ, is that most people are just average shooters, until they put some key things in place.

11 The first is the desire to work. Many people desire to accomplish their goals but the necessary work is often more than they are willing to give. It s a sacrifice of time and labor. My desire to learn is my second key and it over shadows my ego and pride. AJ is similar in age to my children, so we make for an interesting pair. There are not many people who will listen and are willing to learn from those much younger than themselves. This allowed me to seek out others who share my desire and have the knowledge to help me accomplish that goal even though it wasn't through traditional means. Third is to accept the truth. The men in my life are as honest time, to persevere and work hard to achieve a goal they have set without giving up or altering that goal to a lower standard, in this busy world we live in with instance gratification for most things. as the day is long and if you ask a question, expect to get an honest answer. If the truth hurts, examine why. 99% of the time you ll realize it s because it is correct. Be honest with yourself; accept the truth or you won t improve. Finally, you have to persevere. You can never give up. If you give up, if you don t see it through, you ll never know if you could have accomplished your goal or not. A flurry of recognition, after winning at Perry, has had my head spinning. I m still just your ordinary farm wife who found something she liked to do and persisted. I m not special, the achievement was special because it s rare for someone to sacrifice their about me being high women, so my husband and I started our six hour drive home. About half way home I began receiving messages from friends congratulating me on my win. I had no idea what they were talking about. I checked the website and sure enough I was listed as high woman. Epilogue: After shooting both my scoped rifle and open sighted rifle I went over to the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center, where I picked up my targets and received medals for shooting a gold standard and bronze standard scores in my two relays. My medals were presented by two time Olympic Gold medalist Gary Anderson. At that time, no one said anything Oct Nov - Dec

19 U.S. Shotgun Shines at the 52 nd World Shooting Championships By Bill Beard, Director (C) To put these results in perspective, the reader should understand that it is much more difficult to win a medal in the World Championships than at the Olympics! In the Olympic Games, the number of competitors is strictly limited by the awarding of quota slots that are earned by a country to send an athlete to shoot in a given event. For example, at the last Olympic Games there were 41 competitors in the Men s 50 Meter Free Pistol event, and only 37 competitors in the Women s 50 Meter 3-Position event. By comparison, at the World Shooting Championships (which is also held only once every 4 years, two years prior to the Olympics), every country can enter 3 competitors in each event, resulting in a number of events having over 100 world class competitors. With that in mind, there was not much good news for the United States coming out of the recently completed 52 nd World Shooting Championships in Changwon, South Korea, other than a great showing from our shotgun athletes. The best news was the podium sweep of the Women s skeet competition, with Caitlin Conner, Kim Rhode, and Amber English taking the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals, respectively, along with the Team Gold. Conner and Rhode also won two quota slots for the U.S. to fill for the next Olympic Games in Vincent Hancock also won the Gold Medal and a quota slot in the men s skeet competition. The only other quota slot for the U.S. was earned by the Army Marksmanship Unit s Mike McPhail by virtue of his Bronze Medal win in Men s 50 Meter Three Position Rifle competition. Otherwise, in the new mixed team competitions (one male and one female) the U.S. recorded the following results: Trap: 11 th and 47 th out of 52 teams; Air Rifle: 18 th and 45 th out of 71 teams; and Air Pistol: 16 th and 45 th out of 62 teams. In individual competition, the U.S. posted the following finishes: Men s Trap = 6 th, 18 th, and 40 th, (127 competitors) as well as Team Silver Medal. Women s Trap = 11 th, th, and 30 th (73 competitors) as well as Team Bronze Medal. Men s Air Rifle = 45 th, 54 th, and 57 th (112 competitors). Women s Air Rifle = 36 th, 55 th, 66 th (113 competitors). Men s Air Pistol = 26 th, 80 th, and 87 th (115 competitors). Women s Air Pistol = 26 th, 48 th, 70 th (100 competitors). Men s 50 Meter 3- Position Rifle = 3 rd, 23 rd, and 32 nd (105 competitors). Women s 50 Meter 3-Position Rifle = 26 th, 42 nd, 45 th (96 competitors). Men s Rapid Fire Pistol = 23 rd, 49 th, and 58 th (71 competitors). Women s 25 Meter Pistol = 30 th, 33 rd, and 62 nd (80 competitors). Men s 50 Meter Prone Rifle = 13 th, 15 th, 16 th (110 competitors) as well as Team Silver Medal. Women s 50 Meter Prone Rifle = 62 nd, 70 th, and 71 st (86 competitors). Men s 50 Meter Pistol = 61 st, 62 nd, and 65 th (66 competitors). Men s 300 meter 3- Position Rifle = 24 th, 27 th, and 30 th (30 competitors). Women s 300 Meter 3-Position Rifle = 5 th, 23 rd, 30 th (30 competitors). Overall, the United States came in 9 th in the medal count, with 3 Gold, 9 Silver, and 7 Bronze Medals (19 total), including both team and individual placings. Danville native Sarah Beard had a busy schedule in Changwon, competing in one separate team match, and four individual matches, one of which also had an elimination day prior to the Medal match. Her results were: Air Rifle Mixed Team with fellow OTC resident athlete Dempster Christenson: Combined score of for 46 th place out of 71 teams. Women s Air Rifle Individual: for 36 th of 113 competitors. Women s 50 Meter 3-Position Rifle Individual: Elimination Day: X for 9 th of 53, leading the U.S. Team to a 7 th Place finish. Match Day: X for 42 nd of 96. Women s 300 Meter Prone Rifle Individual: 580, tied for 12 th of 34 competitors. Women s 300 Meter 3-Position Rifle Individual: 1154 for 5 th of 30 competitors. In a phone conversation with her Dad, she said she loved traveling to all the different countries she s been fortunate enough to compete in, but she sure was looking forward to touching down in San Francisco and planting her feet firmly on American soil! I know what she means. Sarah will be moving from Colorado Springs to Ft. Benning, GA on October 1 to train for the next two years for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

20 Behind the Line By Brad Hartwick, VP Junior Activities Fall is on us and we are starting to see a lot of youth shooting opportunities developing around the area. On September 15 th the Patoka Valley Limbhangers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) hosted their annual JAKES Day at Cool Springs in Huntingburg. Initial registration had 226 youth signed up, but with a delay due to rain, they had 99 kids turn out for the event. While the number is still very impressive, the age of the youth is extremely encouraging. Kids from 2 years to 14 years old were exposed to 5 stand trap shooting, Izaak Walton Save the Date: January 19, 2019 The ISRPA will host a Junior 3-Pos Air Rifle match at the Hancock County 4-H Center, located in Greenfield. A lot of details are still being worked out, but here are a few of the highlights. Purdue Rifle and Pistol Team and the Midway USA Foundation representative will be on hand to gather more information on these programs. We are also in the process of getting this match sanctioned by the CMP, as part of the state qualifier for the CMP regional match. Individual and Team matches may be offered, along with classifications according to average scores. Our goal for this match is to gather as many youth from the state to have a fun, safe and learning experience. For more information, or to get on the list, please contact us at youth@isrpa.org. Service Rifle Clinic By George Eberhardt, CMP Match Director at SIR&PC League Archery, and the Air Rifle Trailer along with many other events throughout the day. There were many kids who had never shot an air rifle, shotgun or bow. They all had a safe, great experience and we all hope to see them in years to follow at this event as well as many others. Junior Shooting Sports has or will start in many places in the near future. The Jasper Rifle and Gun Club (Dubois County) is hosting a youth trap event every Sunday for the next month for new and experienced youth interested in that sport. In Southern Indiana, youth have the opportunity to shoot air rifle at Versailles, Seymour, Shoals, Georgetown and Jasper. Southern Indiana Rifle and Pistol Club also hosts a dynamic youth program including small bore rifle. The 4-H, American Legion, or local gun club in your area may also offer Shooting Sports as part of their program. For more information, or to get on the list, please contact us at youth@isrpa.org. Southern Indiana Rifle & Pistol Club offered a Service Rifle Clinic at their indoor range on August 25 th for shooters new to high power competition. The Clinic covered rifles, equipment, ammunition, the different matches, course of fire, come ups for different distances, how to read the wind, shooting positions, pit duty and more. Eleven new shooters enrolled to learn everything needed to be ready to compete next season. Planning is underway for the 2019 SIR&PC full menu of high power matches will largely follow this year s format: First Saturday F-class, Second Saturday NRA/CMP high power, and third Saturday CMP Games matches. A CMP M1 clinic is set for March 9 th. The CMP matches are very popular: this clinic is a great opportunity to get ready for a lot of fun on the range! The club has three M1 s to loan new shooters for their first or second match to help you get started. Look for the 2019 schedule and more information on the SIR&PC website!

21 Grassroots Volunteers The National Rifle Association s grassroots volunteers are in high gear for the November 6 elections. Indiana s David Conte, NRA Grassroots Field Coordinator, recently caught up with the Indiana Shooting Sports News (ISSN) to explain why this election is so important and how volunteers can get involved. ISSN: Is Indiana an especially high priority state for the NRA this election? David Conte: Absolutely! One of the most hotly contested senate races in the country is right here in Indiana. Voters have the opportunity to elect a new senator to represent them in Washington, D.C. ISSN: Which candidate is the NRA backing in this race? David Conte: The NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) has endorsed Mike Braun in the U.S. senate race in Indiana. Based on his support of and commitment to the Second Amendment, Mike has earned an A rating from the NRA-PVF in the November 6 election. An A rating is reserved for a solidly pro-gun legislator who has supported the NRA s position on votes of importance to gun owners. There s no question that Mike is going to stand with law-abiding gun owners against the Schumer/ Pelosi/Bloomberg gun control agenda of banning guns, magazines, an ammunition. Mike has a deep respect for our hunting heritage and has clearly demonstrated his willingness to faithfully defend the Second Amendment rights of Hoosiers. Indiana deserves a U.S. senator who s going to vote right on the Second Amendment all the time, not some of the time. themselves. Our greatest strength has always been our members and supporters at the grassroots level. They are on the front lines fighting for our rights. This year, we will need their help more than ever. ISSN: How can gun rights supporters get involved in the fight? David Conte: The NRA is looking for volunteers who will knock on doors and make phone calls to educate their friends and neighbors about the candidates this year. A few hours a week can make a huge difference! Please contact the NRA Campaign Field Representative (CFR) in your area. Indiana Grassroots Field Coordinator David Conte (703) david@nrailafrontlines.com Indianapolis Kelvin Curtis, CFR (703) kelvin@nrailafrontlines.com South Bend Chandler Stewart, CFR (571) chandler@nrailafrontlines.com Evansville Donnie Webb, CFR (703) donnie@nrailafrontlines.com ISSN: What makes this election year unique for gun rights? David Conte: In recent months, our Second Amendment rights have been under attack like never before. Gun control extremists are pouring tens of millions of dollars into candidates who will make it harder for law-abiding Hoosiers to protect and defend
