Chris Segui chaired the picnic and Carl Parducci stepped up to man the grill. Lots of good food and some good flying made for a very nice day. See Picnic, page 2

6 Page 6 Minutes of OCM Meeting on August 27, 2014 P resident Ed Hollema called the meeting to order at 7:05pm after the Pledge of Allegiance. There were approximately 36 members present including the four officers (Harry Jenkin was unable to attend). Bill Martin called for comments on the published minutes and/or a motion to accept them as written. The minutes were accepted as presented, after the normal motion, second, and vote process. Bill also reported the new memberships of William Somerville (from Southern Ocean County Modelers) and Cayden Ferlan (Victor Czornyj s grandson). During the meeting there were two additional Junior members signed up. Katie Bollard (Bill Bollard s daughter) and Charles Cilino (Tony Riccio s grand-nephew) bringing the total membership to 133. Joe Acquisto presented the Treasurer s Report. Since the previous meeting there were net expenses of $ and membership revenue of $ The Treasurer s report was accepted as presented, after the normal motion, second, and vote process. In the Field Committee report Ron Syanovitz reported that the grass is thick and healthy. The volunteers are cutting it on Tuesday and Friday mornings and are usually done by 9:00 am. Members are also reminded that all trash must be carried out by the members themselves. There is no waste collection at the field. Joe Acquisto pointed out that all members are free to help out when they see things that need to be done. Anything you can do, like running the trimmer for a few minutes, is greatly appreciated. Jam Rabii commented that the grass is in the best shape he has seen in his four years with the club. The Safety report was handled by Ed Hollema who began with the announcement that Harry Jenkin had resigned as Safety Officer. The committee is in the process of finding a replacement. In the meantime the four remaining officers will share the duties. Joe Acquisto and Tony Riccio are often at the field if there are concerns. As always, safety is every member s responsibility. Additional safety discussion included a review of the Field Rules discussed at the July meeting. Ed announced that the rules will be printed as written and posted at the field. The reminders included not standing in the opening of the pit fence while flying, and not extensively running motors in the pit area (be courteous to others); and on the positive side you should fly the pattern. There were a surprising number of questions about the definition of the pattern. Simply the leg closest to the field should be flown into the wind. In the event there is no wind or cross wind, the first plane in the air sets the pattern and all others must follow or wait. see Minutes, page 7

7 Page 7 Minutes, from page 6 Old Business: Mike Cook and Jam Rabii updated everyone on the second night flight. They were the only pilots and turnout was light, but the weather was great with a big moon in the sky. The aircraft looked like UFOs in the sky. There will be another evening flight in the next couple of weeks. An will be sent when the date is set. Chris Segui recapped the Club Picnic. The turnout was moderate with about 60 people in attendance. The winds were not great for flying, but many people did get in the air. There was plenty of food and fun. Special thanks to Carl Parducci who stepped up to take the grill when Bob Miceli was unable to attend. Everyone who showed up volunteered to make the event run smoothly. Lee Morey and Ed Hollema reviewed the planning for the upcoming 3d Event on October 4 th and 5 th. The committee met last week, the sanction is in place, and the flyer should be done this week. The rate for the event will be $10 for one day or $15 for two-day registration and the price includes one raffle ticket. Sponsorship commitments are still being finalized, but we are looking at some great prize offerings. This is a two-day event so volunteers are needed to help with parking, food, registration, safety, and cleanup. This event is drawing a lot of attention and it is a golden opportunity for OCM to be one of those clubs we all read about in the AMA magazine. To make that happen we need our members to pitch in. New Business: Ed Hollema announced that Ron Syanovitz has resigned as the Chief Instructor for personal reasons. Danny Ditursi has accepted the position for the remainder of the year. Lee Morey reminded everyone to use the FAA extended comment period to make our voice heard. Lee, with some help from Paul Meier summarized the pending lawsuit that has been filed by a group of RC companies against the FAA over the ban of commercial activity which will impact their sponsorships. Jam Rabii related a conversation that he had with Lois in the AMA office about test flights with non-ama members. He found out that the Introductory Pilot program is a formal program that allows people to learn to fly before they become AMA members. The instructor must be certified and the program is limited to 60 days. However, any AMA member may take a non -AMA member up on a buddy box without voiding their AMA coverage. Ed Hollema will verify this information, in writing, with Eric Williams. In response to a concern regarding the lack of coverage for OCM in the AMA magazine, Horace Hagen pointed out that the magazine pays $75.00 for articles. They are always looking for material and images. Horace volunteered to put together an article on the 3D Event and asked that people send him pictures. Joe Acquisto reminded everyone that we have to do something newsworthy which means events and volunteers! Lee Morey inquired about club rules for First Person View (FPV) flight on our field. The discussion was animated with many members expressing their concerns that the misuse of FPV equipment by the general public will have a negative impact on our hobby. 8 Page 8 Minutes, from page 7 club does not have specific rules limiting FPV, however the club does require that all AMA regulations and guidelines are enforced. AMA Document #550 from the AMA Advance Flight Systems Committee outlines the requirements and can be downloaded from the site in the Documents section, under Advance Flight Systems Operations. Ed advised that the board will take a look at this issue to determine if the club should add additional rules. Ed Hollema asked members to watch for some neighbors that have been coming onto the property to fly model rockets. This is not an authorized activity as they are not club members. If you see them please politely advise them that they should not be on the property unless they are specifically authorized by the township and that they cannot launch from this site. Notify Ed if you encounter these folks. Models of the Month: Chris Segui showed off his foam board Nutball. The round aircraft, complete with smiley face design, is a great way to have inexpensive fun! Bill Bollard pulled out his Cressline Model s Long EZ which he says has been through 5 moves, a bunch of girlfriends, and a wife. The mostly complete airframe looks great and hopefully the exposure will compel Bill to finish this project soon. We all look forward to seeing her in the air.
