Box 569, Lakehurst, NJ February 2017 Windy Weather Planes To learn to fly in the wind, one must fly in the wind Author Unknown ll too often, on an otherwise nice, but A windy day, folks just don t fly. Obviously, for a beginner, that s just common sense but for someone who has some experience, the wind should just be another challenge to add some spice to their flying. While it s easy to see that experience level has a lot to do with how much wind is too much, it may not be quite as apparent that the type of plane you re flying also can have a great effect on your ability to handle winds. Let s go through a bunch of airplane design features and see which ones give us the best flying characteristics to handle winds and the resulting turbulence. Size: In general, the larger the plane, everything else being equal, the better it will handle winds of all kinds; they just don t flop around as much! Dihedral: The more dihedral in a plane s wing, the more it is going to be affected by crosswind gusts; it is hard to keep the wings reasonably level, and therefore lineup to the runway is difficult in a crosswind situation. Wing Loading: The higher the wing loading, the less a plane will be affected when hit with a gust. Aspect Ratio: Lower aspect ratio (stubby) wings will be less bothered by gusts; there is less leverage for side forces to upset the plane, and the lower aspect ratio wing has a greater tolerance to changes in angle of attack caused by gusts. Power: Pretty obvious having the power to overcome the forces provided by the wind is a must. The same goes when you get into a sticky situation. Lateral Control: Ailerons are very beneficial in a crosswind, in landing and takeoff phases. The ability to dip a wing into a crosswind without changing heading is essential, as is the ability to rudder the plane parallel to the runway heading while keeping wings level with aileron while landing. Landing Gear: Tri-gear planes are easier to land and take off in a crosswind than tail draggers. And the wider the spread on the main gear, the better. Maneuverability: This one s a bit harder to quantify. You want a plane with stability, yet you do need good maneuverability to cope with gusts. So you want a plane that is stable, yet responsive. see Windy, page 2

This is because the CG of the plane is nearer, in a vertical sense, to the aerodynamic center of the wing. So the low wing plane is not as easily rolled by a side gust. And by mounting the main landing gear on that low wing, we can spread them out wider. It s unfortunate that almost every item above is in direct opposition to the characteristics found in a lot of popular trainers, the main exception being the requirement for tricycle landing gear. But even with trainers, there are differences; compare a Seniorita with the Cadet Mk2. While the Seniorita may be a bit slower and bit easier to fly, the Cadet, with its ailerons, higher wing loading, lower aspect ratio, and lower dihedral, is a far better plane flying in windy conditions. Going a step further with the same kit manufacturer, their Cougar (.40)/Cobra (.60 size) kits embody ALL the right characteristics for windy flying. Drill an appropriately sized hole through the cowl and into the balsa block. Drill out the balsa block to accept Nyrod. Press a short length of Nyrod in the hole and wick thin CA around the Nyrod. You now have a very vibration-proof mounting method that will undoubtedly outlast your model. 3 Page 3 Minutes of OCM Meeting on January 25, 2017 P resident Ed Hollema called the meeting to order at 7:00pm after the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Vince Scatuccio called for comments or corrections to the minutes of the November meeting that were published in the newsletter. The minutes were accepted as presented, after the normal motion, second, and vote process. The membership total stands at 86 paid members, with an additional 13 junior members. Treasurer Tom Moore reported the December balance was $10, and as of the January meeting the balance was $11, Safety Officer Tony Riccio noted the field is in good shape. He again stressed that safety is always the first and last thing. OLD BUSINESS Ed talked about the 2017 events being scheduled. Field Work day, scheduled April 8 th, rain date April 9 th. Activities include building tables, move wind sock, paint fence, fix gate, etc. Auction, scheduled April 29 th Pattern Contest, scheduled May 20 th Community Day, scheduled September 9 th Mall Display, to be scheduled 3D fun fly, to be scheduled War Bird and Fun Fly, to be scheduled. The Jackson day event would be a good day for members to display their planes. Bill Bollard will look into this event. CAP (Civil Air Patrol ) event to be scheduled, tentatively June 3 rd Ed mentioned we received comments from a few members on the new safety guidelines for starting internal-combustion engines. These comments will be incorporated into the overall guidelines and published on our web-site. Members paying their dues after January 31 st will be charged an administration fee of $25 above the $70 membership fee. In-door flying continues February 3 rd, 10 th, 17th, 24 th and March 10 th. Vince received an from Jackson township engineer, Dan Burke stating that the most recent solar farm activity is that the Pinelands Commission staff visited the site last week with an environmental consultant. see, Minutes, page 4

4 Page 4 Minutes, from page 3 NEW BUSINESS The gate combination was changed on January 1, 2017; along with the other locks and secure areas of our web-site. The number is on the back of your 2017 membership card. AMA Expo East (formally known as the WRAM show) is scheduled for Feb Scholarship and donations for 2017 will be the same as last year. Jackson high school - $500 Jackson Police Jackson Fire - $200 Jackson Ambulance - $200 Vince stated that the club will apply for the 2017 AMA leader award. He also spoke about an idea for members to bring storage box containers (10 x10 ), on-site at Wiskow field for storage of their planes and equipment. The member would be responsible for the rental and full cost of the unit. The club would charge $10 a month for land usage fee. We estimate we could accommodate 5-7 units. Please contact Vince if you are interested. Ed talked about purchasing a new shelter for the field with side covers, as well as heat. This would help in the winter months. The AMA has a Scholarship program for students approaching college. The Academy of Model Aeronautics/Charles H. Grant Scholarship program has an application deadline of February 1, For more information, go to the AMA web-site. Reminder: all planes must be labeled with your name, AMA and FAA number and other contact info. Vince announced that the Atoms RC swap meet is February 4 th. See the web-site event calendar for more information. He also brought up an idea for used flying, air and space magazines. Any member wanting to share their used magazines can bring them to the meeting. Any member interested, can borrow the magazine and return it the following month for someone else to read. All magazines not borrowed must be taken back by the owner or they will be trashed. MODEL OF THE MONTH Bill Martin and Vic Czornyj showed their joint-build 1941Taylor Craft. Progress on the build is coming along nicely. Chris Segui also had a hand in the building project. Vince Scatuccio was awarded the Crash of the Month award for getting his drone hooked on the gym basketball hoop. It has a DLE35RA motor, a Hitec 9 channel radio and an 18-8 prop. They expect it will be ready to take to the air in spring. 6 Page 6 Jack Brady Former OCM Member Jack Brady, age 86 of Whiting died on January 19, 2017 at Community Medical Center, Toms River, NJ. Jack was born in New York City and lived in Sayreville prior to moving to Whiting 20 years ago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed as a maintenance mechanic for Maxwell House Coffee in Hoboken until his retirement. Jack was a member of the VFW Post 9503 in Bayville, the East Coast Indoor Flyers and the. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary in 2012 and his daughter, Judy, his parents and his brothers, William and Edward. Jack is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Behrens, Patricia Roman, Mary Hackl, Joy Brander and Beth Cellini. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard and Donald and his sisters Dorothy Egan, Joan Henry and Linda Brady. Visitation was held on Sunday, January 22nd at The Family Owned Carmona- Bolen Home for Funerals in Whiting. A religious service was held on Monday at the funeral tome. Entombment was at Whiting Memorial Park. AMA/WRAM Expo East February Meadowlands Exposition Center Secaucus, NJ More Tips and Tricks Don t Cut that Wire! When your cell count gets too high for your speed control s BEC and you want to disable it, cut the positive (red) wire that runs from the speed control to the receiver. If you cringe at the thought of cutting the wire on your expensive speed control, here is a simple solution: buy a short servo extension and cut its positive wire. Plug the servo extension between the speed control and the receiver; now, if you want to use the BEC in another installation, just omit the extension. Foam Tape on the Wing Saddles Exhaust residue that enters through the wing saddle can damage unprotected wood in the plane s interior and will eventually ruin it. You can protect this area by applying foam tape around the wing saddle. It will form a fuelproof seal and is soft, so it won t hinder wing alignment.
