It sure was a great summer with a lot of action at the Basin. Our club has experienced an expediential increase in public and member participation. We had almost 80 in attendance at the last meeting. I wanted to first thank Mr. Eric Pacheco for running the LA Heli Classic event on the Labor Day Weekend. Despite record heats the event had close to 50 participants and was financially successful. I also wanted to thank Mr. Jay Rapogle for running the first Valley Flyers/Giant Scale event. These events are always a lot of fun to attend. We have pretty much run most of our 2007 events with a few left to wrap up the year. The Valley Flyers BBQ will be our next which will be held on October 21 st. We are trying to make the event more interesting by having different types of clinics such as a Turbine clinic, Trainer clinic and also invited a few Manufacturers to run various clinics on their products. We will keep you posted on the details, in the very near future. I regret to inform you that our trailers at the field were broken into last month. The locks were cut with Bolt Cutters. Regretfully, the items taken were 2 of the club trainers. Thanks to Mr. Sweany the field manager, new locks and keys were installed right away with hardened metal boxes build around the new locks to prevent further assault. We will be drawing our 2008 event schedule within the next 30 days so this is the time to put your ideas in for the next year events. Please sign up on the official s sheet at the next monthly meetings. See the details on the flyer in this newsletter issue. Regards, Bob Smith I will have my spreadsheet at the September meeting for members to review for accuracy. On behalf of the members, thank you in advance for your support! Bob Smith Event Report - GSS FUN FLY By MARV ZAUSS Giant Scale Director Hi, Just a note to tell you that the SFV Giant Scale Flyers held a fun fly this past Sunday, the 16 Th. We Had a nice, but somewhat small turnout of flyers, only 24 registered pilots. There was an excellent mix of planes and a very good spectator turnout. The weather was 57 th Anniversary - 2 -
3 beautiful and there were no accidents that I recall. The pilots were treated to pizza for lunch and there was Mr. Hospitality & Your Future enough leftover that we were able to sell some and make a little additional income for the club. Our gross income was approximately $360 and we had a good group of helpers show up to manage the event. My thanks to all who volunteered there time and energy. SAFETY REMINDER! By GEORGE FINCH What could be better than helping a prospective new member with a balky engine? Well to start with, the needle barely extended out of the left side of the fuse. So, I reached in around the prop to turn the needle. This produced a nasty grinding sound as I turned my palm to hamburger on the prop tip. Two weeks later, this is what it looks like. By RICC BIEBER Director of Hospitality So here we are at the pre-end-of-the-year time of year. Most of the races have been run, it s FINALLY getting a bit colder, and our calendar year is starting to slow down. The good news is that we accomplished a lot. The better news is that we have an open field to do more. Volunteer more. Make more friends. Build more aircraft from scratch! And maybe start on your ROG for next year NOW! We have welcomed in the members of the Giant Scale Squadron. As a current and past member, I am personally pleased to have the joining of our groups, and I am sure that it will be beneficial for both groups in the long run. I know that the GSS membership at large is a reservoir of knowledge that cannot be dismissed or lost, and I look forward to the sharing of expertise they (we) collectively represent. I urge you all to make use of the resource! We do have a few things coming up as the year winds down. Both the Giant Scale and Valley Flyers BBQ s are coming up in October, and I urge you to take advantage of both. One of the reasons I belong to the club is the camaraderie that ensues at the events and at the field (for the most part; some of the guys at the field still don t get it!). You are a part of this puzzle. R e a ll ll y C o o ll S t u f f In November, we are going to have a Nite Fly. Since it will be dark a lot earlier, we will have more dark time to fly before we have to vacate the premises. And,Yes, we will have pizza and soda available. This would be your fair warning to plan ahead and get that nite flyer ready! December is here already?? Well, not quite. But it is time to let you know that the annual holiday party will be heald on December 8 th at the University Club as CSUN. Good news for you, work news for me, I am in charge again, so look forward to a grand time. More info as we get closer to the date (like say, next month?). That s about it for now. As you can see, even though we are winding down for the year, there is still stuff going on. And in January, we start up all over again! Flaps up! 57 th Anniversary - 3 -
4 A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT! By Bob Smith Special Report The following applies to Valley Flyer and Giant Scale Squadron members; Please communicate to me if you plan on attending the club picnic on October 21st, how many are in your party, the choice between steak and chicken for yourself and each guest and what side dish, if any, you plan on bringing. Side dishes could consist of salad, bread or dessert. I can be contacted through at flynbs@socal.rr.com, telephone or directly at the September meeting. Please see the flyer for BBQ and event details. Some exciting things are happening in the hobby! Great Planes introduced a new ARF aircraft named the REVOLVER. It will be featured in the September 25 th giveaway. See the graphic of this.46 sized beauty in the newsletter. It easily converts to an Electric! Special Notice Turbine News Dear Turbine Waiver Holder, On August 12, 2007, the AMA Executive Council approved changes to the turbine waiver application process recommended by the AMA Safety Committee. To review the specific changes, please access the Safety Regulations for Model Aircraft Gas Turbines on our website or contact me for a hardcopy. The following provides an overall summary of the changes: Any past references to a notarization process, either explicit or implied, have been removed. Waiver application process for fixed and rotary wing aircraft has been streamlined. I wanted to thank everyone for their financial support in the August drawing! It would appear you enjoyed it! I read the following from the Great Planes web site; Urbana, Illinois, August 24, 2007 Great Planes Model Manufacturing announced today that it has acquired the Lanier R/C and Carl Goldberg product lines. Both companies are currently located in Oakwood, GA but will soon relocate to Great Planes' headquarters in Champaign-Urbana, IL. I guess that s why they named it Great Planes! And finally, I will be updating the 2007 event Official s Roster during the monthly meetings. CD s and members that have participated in officiating at events this year should review my name list to insure you get credit to be entered in this year s drawing! The renewal process for fixed wing waivers was removed. Once obtained, the waiver remains in effect unless revoked for cause or if your membership lapses for more than one year. A process for temporary suspension was added to the waiver removal/revocation process. The purpose of this section is to allow a means to identify operational or safety issues, on an individual waiver holder basis, which can be addressed without undergoing a complete reapplication process. These changes attempt to reflect the overall effort that has been made within the turbine community to act responsibly and to effectively police their activity. This should also help ease some of the current Contest Director work loads in the field as well as headquarter staff. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
