8 jft't Visit to Brampton during the 1973 Royal Tour of Canada Brampton was officially created a village by a charter granted by the Governor General of Canada. The charter came into effect on January 1, Brampton became a Town in In 1973 Brampton celebrated the 100,h anniversary of the incorporation of the Town. THE QUEEN ADDRESSES BRAMPTON CENTENNIAL CROWDS Queen Elizabeth II visited the Town of Brampton on June 29,1973 during this 100thanniversary celebration. Excerpts from the official book published to commemorate the centenary describe the event: "Queen Elizabeth, on herarrival in Brampton on Friday, June 29"', wasaccorded one of the warmest welcomes she received anywhere during her ten-day Canadian Tour. Gage Park, site of the official ceremonies, was crowded by thousands of Bramptonians and visitors from many other Ontario communities. Hundreds ofchildren were in the crowd which cranedto see every movement ofthe Queen. The Queen and Prince were escorted to the bandstand, which servedas the dais, where Mayor Archdekin extended his civic welcome to the Royal visitors, following the playing of "0 Canada" by the Brampton Citizens Band. The Mayor presented Brampton Centennial gold coins to Her Majesty. 8

9 J/4 Her Majesty and His Royal Highness then signed the Town's Distinguished Visitors Book. Proceeding to the special platform where 25 new Canadian citizens were located, The Queen and Prince Phillip, escorted by the Secretary of State and Bruce Beer, Judge of the Citizenship Court, met thisgroup which had received citizenship at an earlier court the same day. Her Majesty then spoke as "The Queen of Canada" to the large and enthusiastic crowd assembled in the park. The Royal visitors then proceeded past the public to the motorcade at the point of departure at the northeast corner of Gage Park. "God Save the Queen" was played by the Lome Scots Military Band. Driving North on Main Street, en route to Caledon in an open car, Her Majesty waved to thousands more of her loyal subjects who were lined up in tiers along the entire route. This was a day which will remain a highlight of local history and won't be forgotten for many years." From a letter To Mayor Archdekin on the command ofthe Queen on July 1,1973, Her Majesty and His Royal Highness were delighted to be able to visit Brampton in your centennial Year and were much moved by the tremendous reception which they received from the people. It was particularly appropriate that in thisyear The Queen should meet the new Canadian citizens and also to speak on the subject ofcitizenship.

10 JfrUo The Queen and The Duke ofedinburgh greatly appreciatedthe excellent arrangements madefor their visit which gave everyone in the large crowd an opportunity ofseeing them and also allowed Her Majesty and His Royal Highness to talk to a number of people. I am also to convey toyou the warm thanks of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh for thecentennial rosebushes andgold coins which were so kindly presented to them." Recommendations Over the 60 years of her reign, Her Majesty has dedicated her life to public service and continues to serve Canada and Canadians with unflagging dedication, duty and genuine affection. In this, her Diamond Jubilee year, Brampton has an opportunity to recognize Her Majesty's service and devotion to Canada, Her Realms and the Commonwealth by creating lasting tributes to our Queen. As Mayor, I am proposing the following initiatives to commemorate our Queen during her Diamond Jubilee year: 1. The Alderlea Estate: the greenhouse pavilion. Upon its expected completion in October, 2012, the new greenhouse pavilion that is currently under construction at Alderlea be dedicated "The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Pavilion". 2.
