CONTENTS Leadership Message 1 External Fundraising Events 2 Wish Stories 4 Special Events & Wish Children Events 12 Donors & Sponsors 14 Thank You 17 Chris Greicius, a brave 7-year-old boy, from Phoenix, Arizona, was the inspiration for the Make-A-Wish mission to grant wishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses. Chris had leukaemia and his greatest wish was to become a policeman. His dream was realised when his family, friends and local community organised a tailor-made uniform, a ride in a helicopter and completed his VIP treatment with the presentation of his policeman s badge. All involved were so touched by this experience that they vowed that granting wishes, and making dreams come true for these incredibly brave children, should continue. To date, more than 334,000 wishes have been granted worldwide and many children have experienced the power of a wish. We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Our aim is to go beyond the mere delivery of each child s wish. Instead, we hope to create an unforgettable and meaningful experience in making these wishes come true. In their fight to overcome their illnesses, we know that such memories are a source of joy, encouragement, hope and even strength, to these children. It is our goal, in Singapore, to reach every medically eligible child. We need you! 3 1 LEADERSHIP MESSAGE A little over a year ago I joined the Singapore chapter of Make-A- Wish Foundation to fill the role of Treasurer. I soon became familiar with the mission and vision of Make-A-Wish - but at that time it was mere words in a brochure. Things soon came to life for me when I got involved in the organizing committee for one of their fundraising events - the Santa Run for Wishes to be held later in that year in December Being the first such event that the Singapore chapter was organizing, the committee had many firsts to encounter. What struck me from the beginning was seeing the energy and commitment from the team. For those who participated in the Santa Run for Wishes it was a great success and a miracle that the team could pull off a great show within a limited period of time. My first encounter with Wish Children was at the annual Christmas Party organized the day after the Santa Run at the same venue. It moved me to see how happy these children and their families were - many with serious disabilities. This for me was an awakening of sorts and made the mission that I read in the brochures come alive. What I saw was a testament to notion that Happiness Heals. A few months back, I was part of a wish granting team that fulfilled a wish for Matthew, an 11-year-old boy suffering from Burkitt s Lymphoma. It was a simple wish to fulfil; but to see the joy and glow on Matthew s face when he received his box of video games was truly gratifying and a testament to the purpose of the organization. Sometimes, we get too caught up in our lives and take for granted the simple things like having all our faculties in place - things that these children struggle with every day. What may seem like a simple wish for a normal child can bring so much joy and happiness to one suffering from a life-threatening condition. I am humbled to see the work of Make-A-Wish through their staff and network of volunteers and am privileged to be part of this organization. Contributing to Make-A-Wish gives me happiness and a sense of personal fulfilment. I hope to be able to continue supporting Make-A-Wish Foundation in the years to come. Paul D Souza Treasurer
2 EXTERNAL FUNDRAISING EVENTS TAG HEUER WITH MARIA SHARAPOVA On 22 October, TAG Heuer unveiled Singapore s first ever floating tennis platform. Set on the waters of the historic Clifford Pier and with Marina Bay Sands as the backdrop, it was a indeed a picturesque setting for an evening of light-hearted tennis for two Grand Slam Champions, tennis goddess Maria Sharapova and legend Michael Chang. In a charity rally TAG Heuer pledged $100 per rally to Make-A-Wish and a total of $18,800 was raised by the end of the night! Several of our Wish Children were also invited to catch the court action upfront and 8-year-old Joshua even got to present the new Limited Edition SG50 Aquaracer to Sharapova. The five-time world number one then gave him a hug and an autographed HEAD tennis racquet. THEODORA S RAINBOW PARTY My first experience with MakeA-Wish Foundation began when I partnered the organisation for a school project in Secondary One. The Foundation always has a place in my heart because I really love the idea of making someone else s dream come true. Don t we want our dreams to come true too? Turning 21 this year, I decided to support Make-A-Wish for the second time. Instead of a birthday present, I encouraged my friends to make a donation to Make-AWish to grant wishes! They were extremely supportive, raising $422 amongst 40 of them an amount beyond my expectations! Amazingly, my birthday party was Rainbowthemed, a reminder that there is always hope after a storm. Likewise, I am so grateful for the generosity of my friends in bringing hope to others. By Theodora Ho, Donor
3 BERNICE S BIRTHDAY BASH We wanted to throw a birthday party for my younger girl who is turning six this year, just like what we have done for her elder sister before. The plan was to give her a memorable party before she goes to a different school next year. As with any birthday party, friends started asking Bernice about her wish for birthday presents. Surprisingly, my little girl asked me if she can donate her presents instead. Since we participated in the Santa Run last December, this inspired us to contact the Foundation to find out if there was some form of donation that we could do along with Bernice s birthday party. With the help from MakeA-Wish staff to provide us with donation boxes and information pamphlets, we were able to make Bernice s little wish come true- a mini charity drive that saw her guests donating to a worthy cause. Over $700 was raised and most importantly, witnessing the excitement on her face when Bernice opened the donation box was priceless! By Joie Woo, Donor JAMMING WITH ART In order to be a little bit different, one has to think out of the box sometimes. With this in mind, Alexandra decided to invite her closest friends to a Birthday Art Arteastiq, a boutique teahouse and social painting studio at Mandarin Gallery. The motto of Arteastiq - Life is about using the whole box of crayons means a lot to Alexandra. While her friends enjoyed the painting session, they were also encouraged to make donations to Make-A-Wish instead of bringing gifts. The Birthday Girl likens her life to be blessed with the ability to use a whole box of crayons, and empathises with those who cannot. In her own little way, Alexandra hopes to do more for the less fortunate and has even encouraged her friends to give back to the community. It was surprising how many different art pieces were produced with a little imagination and a lot of fun. In the three hours they shared, everyone felt contented and grateful to be able to contribute to a good cause and make a difference in a child s life. It feels great giving back to the community and it is so easy! We couldn t have said it better, Alexandra.

5 SHI HUI S SNAZZY RIDE Shi Hui is a playful 6-year-old with cerebral palsy and always curious about her surroundings. She is a little shy and prefers interacting with people she is familiar with. Her wish was for a brand new buggy that will fit her better and enhance mobility, accessibility and more importantly, her comfortability. Make-A-Wish worked closely with Shi Hui s physiotherapist to identify the best wheelchair that would suit Shi Hui s needs. The next important step was planning how this wheelchair would be presented to her in an unforgettable way. Shi Hui s Wish Granters found out that she loves Disney characters so the team decided to organize a Mickey Mouse-themed party, surrounded by friends, doctors, nurses and social workers. A room in KK Women s and Children Hospital was turned into a mini Disneyland with decorations and colourful balloons. Once Shi Hui and her family arrived, she was greeted by the smiles of everyone present. A magician wowed the audience with his many tricks, and everyone was then treated to a delicious multi-tiered Mickey Mouse cake sponsored by bakery café, The Gor.Den Artist. The highlight of the party was when Shi Hui s brand new customised buggy was unveiled. Shi Hui couldn t be any happier, grinning from ear to ear, delighted with her new ride and clearly enjoying the companionship of her loved ones. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to The Gor.Den Artist for their support to make this wish come true for Shi Hui. Shi Hui was referred to us by KK Women s and Children Hospital. 8 6 WISH STORIES UNDER THE SEA Aeisyah is a bubbly girl who loves fishes and bubble baths so much that it wasn t too difficult to guess her wish a staycation at the Resort World Sentosa s Ocean Suites! The staycation was meant to lift her spirits before the next phase of treatment started, giving that much needed special boost. Her memorable experience started with a tour of the suite, designed like a deluxe two storey townhouse offering her and her family the best of both land and sea. She was also given five-star treatment and a personalized butler service whilst enjoying spectacular views of the underwater sanctuary. There were also plenty of opportunities to enjoy luxurious bubble baths right next to a spectacular view of over 40,000 marine fishes! During her time at Sentosa, Aeisyah also enjoyed cake decorating, leisurely meals, even toy and souvenir shopping. She also had the rare chance of not only meeting but also touching and swimming with a lovely pink dolphin! The wonderful dolphin experience allowed her to interact with the intelligent mammal and was a fitting finale to her unforgettable staycation. Aeisyah was referred to us by the Children s Cancer Foundation. W IS H G RA NT E RS : Christie, Bryan & Kah Lin
7 JOANNA S BAKING EXTRAVAGANZA Joanna is an intelligent and cheerful girl despite being diagnosed with medulloblastoma. Through their interaction, the Wish Granters found her a big fan of the movie, Frozen. She revealed that she loves Anna from Frozen, simply because, they share the same name. Joanna s wish was both heart-warming and generous - she wanted to bake for everyone. Together with our Wish Granters and the kind assistance of Fairmont Singapore, something very special was put together for Joanna. With exclusive access into the hotel s kitchen, Joanna had a personal baking session with Sebastien Cocquery-Beraud, the Executive Pastry Chef. He taught her how to bake a cake from scratch and decorate it with her favourite Frozen characters. Joanna was joined by her friends and everyone had an extraordinary time decorating cupcakes and cookies. There were more surprises in store for Joanna when she was done in the kitchen. Frozen characters, Elsa and Anna, joined Joanna for afternoon tea where they had nail painting sessions, games, and even snow to complete the Frozen experience! The clear highlight was when Joanna wheeled her proud creation into the room and served her guests slices of the delicious cake she baked. At the end of the party, Joanna was presented with an oven so that she can continue her passion for baking. Joanna was referred to us by the Children s Cancer Foundation. WISH GRA N T E R S: Janet, Katherine & Michelle
8 WISH STORIES W IS H G RA NT E RS : Clara & Rachelle Pony Day Out Given her love for My Little Pony, it was little wonder Arifah dreamed of hav ing a day playing with ponies and to have the ponies she has seen on television come alive. After much planning, Make-A-W ish Wish Granters came up with the perfect way to help make Arifah s wish come true. The day star ted with Arifah decked out in My Little Pony appare l from head to toe and building her very own pon y at Build-A-Bear Singapore. She had lots of fun fluffing up, brushing, choosing pretty clothes and finally registering the birth of her very own person alised pony. Arifah was then in for anothe r surprise after lunch. Thanks to Gallop Stable, Arif ah together with her family and friends had the won drous opportunity to interact with real ponies! The y started with a guided tour around the stab le, followed by a chance to groom, and to fina lly ride those beauties. Arifah enjoyed her ride so mu ch that she went on a second round! Her party which was themed My Little Ponies, was held outdoors and include d many fun activities such as face painting, freshly made popcorn by Garrett Popcorn, fun photo booth by Madebymoo, a magic show and balloon sculpting by Tommillusions, cupcakes and a cake with Arifah s name and favourite pon y character on it! It was certainly a day to rem ember for everyone, especially for little Arifah who exclaimed that her day was, Awesome! Arifah was referred to us by the Children s Cancer Foundation.
9 GREEN SANCTUARY Boon Hong is a cheerful 13-year-old boy who enjoys going to school. His family, especially his mother, are always watching him closely as he is prone to bouts of fits. He warmed up easily to volunteers from Make-AWish on their first visit and it didn t take long for them to discover his love for trains and the colour green. When he was asked for his wish, Boon Hong immediately said, I want a green room! and with that, the wheels for a room makeover were set in motion. The room makeover was timely for Boon Hong as getting out of bed each morning was becoming a struggle. He had grown over the years and his current bed is now too low for him. He also needed a sturdier high table to lean on for his daily leg exercises. With the help of Boon Hong and his family, Mr Gary Ong from Charleton Designs came up with some very thoughtful and helpful ideas for the room makeover. Bright and early one Saturday morning several weeks after the initial meet up, the Wish Granters arrived at Boon Hong s home, ready to whisk him and his family away for a stay at a hotel while his room was being transformed. With the generous sponsorship of the good people at the Grand Hyatt Singapore, they were warmly welcomed and enjoyed an overnight stay at the Club floor room. The brilliantly creative team from the Grand Hyatt went above and beyond their call of duty - painstakingly decorating Boon Hong s hotel room with train-theme decorations; even their luggage trolley was decorated to look like a train! Needless to say, Boon Hong and his family had a memorable time at the hotel. W I SH G R AN T E R S: Serene, Karyne & Casper Meanwhile, back at Boon Hong s home, a flurry of activity began soon after the family left. An entire team of workers, including Gary who was there to oversee the entire process, had their sleeves rolled up and worked tirelessly to help make Boon Hong s wish come true. Working at an incredible pace; a fresh coat of paint, new wardrobes, cabinets and bed-frame were put up, curtains, and even trainthemed wall decorations all to suit Boon Hong. The best part of the room makeover was a suspended remote-control train set that was mounted on the ceiling so Boon Hong could indulge in his fascination of watching trains! The transformation was amazing and by Sunday, the makeover was complete and all ready for Boon Hong. The family arrived home with much anticipation. A small ribbon cutting ceremony was in order for Boon Hong before he could enter his new room. The look on his face when he saw his new bedroom was priceless, especially after catching sight of the suspended train track with a moving train. The Make-A-Wish Foundation would like to thank the Grand Hyatt Singapore and Charleton Designs for making Boon Hong s wish come true; we wish Boon Hong many happy days ahead in his new room!
10 WISH STORIES AIMAN S ANIMAL EXPERIENCE Aiman is a bright and cheerful 4-year-old who loves animals. It is remarkable that he is able to identify so many different types of species, and with the help of his grandmother, he knows them both in English and Malay. Aiman s wish was for a staycation at the Festive Hotel at the Resorts World Sentosa, with must-have encounters and visits to see the animals. On his first day, Aiman visited the SEA Aquarium and Dolphin Island at the Underwater World. The dolphin is one of Aiman s favourite animals, and to this day he relives his encounters with them with great gusto. On the second day of his staycation, Aiman s Wish Granters brought him to the Singapore Zoological Gardens and the River Safari. The best moment for Aiman came when the River cruise brought him past the elephant enclosure he was thoroughly thrilled to see how big the elephants were in real life! W I SH G R AN T E R S: Illias & Fiona Aiman was also treated to a very private and exclusive tour of the reptiles, restricted to staff access only. Although he loves animals, Aiman was visibly afraid to touch them so he had help from the volunteers. Aiman had really enjoyed himself, and sometimes asks if he can do it again! Mdm Yati, Aiman s grandmother. Make-A-Wish Foundation would like to thank the Singapore Zoological Gardens and the SEA Aquarium for making Aiman s wish come true. Aiman was referred to us by the Children s Cancer Foundation.
11 ROOMFUL OF SURPRISES Kirrthik is like a typical 13-year-old boy with a gregarious and outgoing personality. He enjoys pop music, watching WWE wrestling, playing video games, soccer, and going fishing with his friends. His wish was for a MacBook which he could use to keep himself occupied while in hospital, keeping up with schoolwork, playing games or surfing the Internet. With his bone marrow transplant due one week after being referred and coinciding with his birthday, his Wish Granters worked tirelessly to plan a birthday celebration for him where he celebrated his 13th birthday at K-suites. When Kirrthik entered the party room with his friends, they headed straight for the pool table for a game of pool, while his siblings played FIFA soccer on the Xbox. It wasn t long before Kirrthik and his friends gathered together to unveil his first surprise a goody bag specially put together by WWE! Kirrthik was all smiles as he reached into the bag and pulled out each item - exclusive WWE merchandise from his favourite wrestlers. After dinner, the boys took turns on the microphones, belting their favourite tunes from Pitbull, Shakira and Ricky Martin. While Kirrthik looked like he was enjoying the evening, it was clear that he was also trying to put on a brave front and not think about his transplant the next day. When it was time to give Kirrthik his second surprise, he was presented with a brand new gold coloured Macbook Pro. The evening continued with more singing and games, and even more surprises for the birthday boy. Kirrthik received a fishing rod and tackle set, and a video greeting from his soccer idol Fandi Ahmad! Kirrthik could not have been happier; his spirits were high and his outlook positive for the procedure the next day. Kirrthik was referred to us by the Children s Cancer Foundation. WISH GRANTERS: Arvind & Bernard

13 SANDISK RIVER SAFARI OUTING On 9 October, SanDisk Singapore invited 14 Wish Children and their families to celebrate Children s Day at the River Safari. It was a day where everyone woke up to clear, sunny skies and there was little sign of the haze. Many of them were excited about spending the day outdoors, giggling and chatting amongst themselves. At the River Safari, everyone was greeted by the friendly Panda mascot and they had a blast taking selfies and pictures! The children visited the various exhibits and learned about the different rivers of the world and their habitats. Some took a leisure cruise around the safari, while others embarked on the Amazon River Quest. The children were entralled by the sights and sounds of wildlife that hail from one of the world s greatest rainforests. The fun-filled morning ended with a scrumptious lunch at KFC, where everyone dug into fried chicken and recieved goody bags. Thank you SanDisk for making this Children s Day a memorable one for our Wish Children!
