5 APPLICATION OF NFHS SPIRIT RULES BOOK Spirit rules provide the minimum safety standards followed by all dance/drill teams Spirit rules should be followed while participants are in a supporting role at an interscholastic contest and during all competition. RULE 1 contains definitions of terms that are used throughout the rules book. RULE 2 contains general information and safety rules that apply to all spirit groups. RULE 3 contains apparel requirements and performance safety rules that apply only to cheerleading. RULE 4 contains apparel requirements and performance safety rules that apply only to dance/drill. Situations and photos are provided as examples only, and do not cover all circumstances in which the rules apply.

6 EDUCATION-BASED ATHLETIC/ACTIVITY PROGRAMS Interscholastic athletics/activities shall supplement the educational environment and provide students with educational experiences. Participation in education-based activity programs promotes student academic achievement. Dance/drill teams are very visible and in a position of great influence and therefore high standards for appearance and conduct are essential. Coaches should ensure uniforms, costumes, music and materials are age-appropriate and suitable for the educational environment. Coaches are expected to be advocates and models of good sportsmanship and follow all rules as written.

7 RULES CLINIC PROCEDURE The Dance/Drill Rules Clinic is comprised of four (4) lessons: 1. Introduction 2. NFHS Spirit Rules Revisions (Part 1) 3. NFHS Spirit Rules Revisions (Part 2) 4. WIAA information At the end of the NFHS Spirit Rules Revisions lessons you will need to successfully complete the LESSON QUIZ before you can continue to the next lesson. At the end of the clinic you will need to successfully complete the FINAL EXAM to finish the clinic. 34 CONCUSSION PROTOCOL The concussion protocol applies for contests of all levels, middle school, high school, varsity and sub-varsity in which WOA (Washington Officials Association) registered officials are being used. At the pre-contest conference between the coach and officials, the official will ask the coach if he/she has a licensed health care provider that is authorized to evaluate possible concussions on site. If the answer is yes, the coach must then introduce the official to that health care provider. If the team does have an approved health care provider with them (on the sideline or courtside) and the official removes an athlete from play for possible concussion signs or symptoms, that athlete could return to play provided they are cleared by the pre-determined health care provider. If the team does not have an approved health care provider with them (on the sideline or courtside) and the official removes an athlete from play for possible concussion signs or symptoms, that athlete will not be allowed to return to play during that contest.
