1 2018 Fall Sports Preview A preview including Valley City High School, Maple Valley, Barnes County North, and Valley City State University Special Section A supplement to the Times-Record Scheff, Mower Lead VCSU Cross Country Special to the Times-Record Pictured are the coaches and members of the Valley City State University cross country team. From left are (front row)julianne Wilson, Angeline Gannon, Allyssa Weitkum, Grace Miller, Kristina Fricke, Tanya Campos, (middle row) Coach Daniel Scheff, Orin Rambow, Kohlton Peterson, Russell Swagger, Louis Leon, Cody Perdue, Mitchell Silkman, Coach Martin Mena, (back row) Spencer Mattheis, Aaron Springer, Dylan Olson, Riley Roy-Lagasse, Menkeh Mendin, Zachary Nelson, Harley Knodel, and Coach Josh Mower. A new face in sports in Valley City is Daniel Scheff. Scheff, who has been an assistant at the University of Wisconsin - Stout for the last five years, took over as the new Valley City State University cross country and track and field head coach after former coach Chris Johnson took a position at Tulane University. Scheff and Coach Josh Mower, who has served as an assistant coach with the team, are serving as co-head coaches for the Vikings program. The team has six women and 13 men on the roster this fall. Scheff said the team s overall goals are to win the conference championship and qualify at least five individual runners to nationals. The men s team returns a strong squad of 11 of its top runners, losing just Dennis Gonzalez from the team. Gonzalez retains his eligibility for the spring track and field season. Returning runners include seniors Louis Leon, Orin Rambow, and Dylan Olson. The women return seniors Grace Miller and Alyssa Weitkum. The women s team can only be built up further from here, having lost no members as we have gained a new transfer from California and rising new freshman. Scheff said other key contributors include incoming freshmen Angeline Gannon, Russel Swagger, Mitchell Silkman, Harley Knidek. Scheff said the team also includes a couple We work together as a family to motivate, inspire, and push each other day by day to achieve all of our individual and team goals. ~ VCSU Cross Country Co-Head Coach Daniel Scheff of transfer students and some start-ups the team is honored to have in its roster. The closeness of the VCSU team is one of its great strengths, according to Scheff. We work together as a family to motivate, inspire, and push each other day by day to achieve all of our individual and team goals, Scheff Our teams have set attainable and realistic goals to achieve this year and we are excited to see these unfold throughout the season. The cross country program at VCSU focuses beyond athletics and instead in developing the student in all aspects. The coaching staff looks forward to growing our athletes in the classroom and preparing them for every challenge that they may face in college and beyond, Scheff said, We as coaches like to try and promote the athletes becoming the best they can be in all aspects that they will be challenged as while a student athlete in the classroom and by becoming the best teams possible each and every year. While none of our athletes are the same, we as a coaching staff take great responsibility in listening and interacting with each and every athlete individually and creating a program to meeting them in order to reach success. Last year, the men s and women s team had unprecedented success at the North Star Athletic Association championships, according to Scheff, with the men finishing second and the women finishing third. Prior to the season, both teams were projected to finish last. While we would have liked to have had more national qualifiers in the 2017 season,we did see to it that our lone qualifier, Grace Miller, set the bar high for her first national appearance, Scheff Our expectations were certainly met. This year should be more competitive on both sides as we look forward to what the athletes are capable of. The team will have their first meet of the season on Friday, Sept. 7, when they compete at Minnesota State University - Moorhead in the MSUM Dragon Twilight Meet. On Saturday, Sept. 22, they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational. The Vikings compete at the Jimmie Invitational in Jamestown on Friday, Oct. 5. They are in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Seminole Valley Stampede. Post-season begins in November. The North Star Athletic Assocation championships are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, in LaCrosse, Wis. The NAIA National Championships will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

2 Page 2B Valley City Times-Record VCHS Tennis: A Culture of Success Building a culture with high expectations for behavior and performance comes over time. One area this culture can be found is in the Hi- Liner tennis program. Over the years, Valley City High School Head Coach Matt Nielson has solidified the principles that guide his teams. Our goal is to reach the Hi-Liner tennis pillars at all times percent effort, positive attitude, and sportsmanship - which will lead to the greatest growth as tennis players and young men to then give ourselves the best opportunity to compete at a high level at regionals, Nielson This year s team includes skilled, experienced, hard working players, according to Nielson. Those players were not afraid to put in time over the summer, adding to the team s strength. We have never had an entire boys team work so hard in the offseason, Nielson Our players came in ready to play with great skill and match experience. Coaches and members of the Valley City High School tennis team are from left (back row) Volunteer Coach Susan Kringlie, Head Coach Matt Nielson, freshman Seth Zeltinger, senior Hale Kringlie, sophomore Jack Ingstad, Assistant Coach Erik Kringlie (front row) eighthgrader Kai Kringlie, sophomore Blake Triebold, junior Austin Rogelstad, junior Collin White, and junior Bennett Rogelstad. We have learned more advanced tennis strategies in the first week of practice than I usually get through in an entire season. Also, the maturity, coachability, and integrity of this team is top notch which leads to more efficient and productive practices. This has been an extremely fun first week of practice to coach! While the team lost the No. 1 and No. 2 players, Liam Williams and Riley Miller, Nielson said eight of the nine varsity players have varsity experience and are ready to rise up to fill those shoes. Last season, the Hi- Liners recorded five team wins, which Nielson said, was two more than any other season in the previous decade. This record included beating the No. 1 and No. 2 teams from the Western Dakota Association. At the West Fargo Invite, the Hi-Liners recorded a total of 16 wins to record a new best. Nielson invites the community to watch the team s matches this fall. You ll see hard fought matches with great intensity and skill, Nielson This team is fun to watch. The varsity roster includes Seth Zeltinger, Hale Kringlie, Jack Ingstad, Kai Kringlie, Blake Triebold, Austin Rogelstad, Collin White, Bennett Rogelstad, and Derek Bear. Junior varsity players include eighth-graders Ethan Bear, Trey Cope, Casey Kruger, Gabriel Little Dog, Max Magnuson, Alex Rogelstad, Gavin Swenson, and seventh-graders Jayden Johnson, Jacob Kruger, Sam Meyer, and Yu Zheng. The Hi-Liners play their first home match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m., hosting Wahpeton at the North Court Complex. Vikings Volleyball Strong on Experience Special to the Times-Record The Valley City State University volleyball team looks to build on its semi-final conference appearance last year. Members and coaches of the VCSU volleyball team are Clarissa Olson, Nissa Johnson, Hannah Anderson, Autumn Johnson, Makayla Wetzel, Morganne Eppard, Ellie Winter, Charlotte Huschka, McKinley Putnam, Leah Ruter, Katie Juarez, Paige Benson, Mackenzie Tansowny, Kallene Klever, Hailie Wilds, Kylie Erickson, Ella Schye, Taylor Sargent, Reagan Ingstad, and Madison Brown. Head Coach Deb Beilke said the team is a great group of athletes that is working hard to prepare for their meets. There is a lot of potential for good race times this year, if the athletes are willing to work for it, Beilke It will be fun to see them progress throughout the season. Last year, the team had 17 state qualifiers, including seven boys and ten girls. We hope to add a few more this year, Beilke That is the goal for most runners is to participate at the state level. The state cross country meet this year is on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Jamestown. While Beilke and assistant coaches Trevor Bakalar and Brad Sufficool hope to build a competitive team with individuals that are constantly improving. But that is not the end all, Beilke We want the team to enjoy being together at races, practices and wherever. We also want to create moments where the runners can look back on these days with fond memories and say they were part of something special. Finally, Beilke added, the coaches hope to help develop the student athletes into lifelong runners. The team competed at Jamestown on Saturday, Aug. 25, in their first meet of the year. Avery Murray led the girls finishing 39th with a time of 22:49:78. Adam Punton led the boys with a 24th place finish, running a time of 18:23:12. 4 Page 4B Valley City Times-Record Co-op Soccer: Working as a Team Although Valley City High School does not have a boys soccer program of its own, several student athletes have trained through the local soccer league and Jamestown s summer league. This work has produced six varsity soccer players who currently take part in the co-op program with the Jamestown Blue Jays. Juniors Chase Jenison, Max Kupitz, and Benjamin Schuldheisz, sophomores Ezra Hanse and Kael Jenison, and freshman Jay Kupitz have all worked their way from playing as children in the Sheyenne Valley Soccer League into spots in the starting line-up for the Blue Jays boys soccer team. The student athletes have been playing together so long they know each other really well, and are also in tune with each other as players. We re really good friends, Chase Jenison It s kind of like a family, added Jay Kupitz. That closeness helps the boys play together as a cohesive group. It s a lot harder if you re not going to know what your teammates are going to do, Jay Kupitz You have to communicate. You need good chemistry, Ezra Hanse agreed. All the boys agree soccer is their favorite sport and look forward to different parts of the season. It s just the excitement of playing and scoring goals, Schuldheisz When the team actually comes together and they re playing well, that s really fun, Chase Jenison There are some differences in playing between competitive soccer league and the high school season, Sheila Anderson/Times-Record Six Hi-Liner student athletes play varsity soccer for the Jamestown Blue Jays. They are (from left) Kael Jenison, Ezra Hanse, Benjamin Schuldheisz, Max Kupitz, Chase Jenison, and Jay Kupitz. From competitive to high school, you do more games and you do a lot of different drills, Schuldheisz You need a lot more stamina, Jay Kunitz added. The strengths go beyond physical. You can t lose your head, Max Kupitz The boys point to leagues coaches Ryan Kuhry and Byron Mitchell, as well as the Jenison boys dad, Lance, as inspirations that have helped them throughout their soccer careers. While the boys hold aspirations to some day play college soccer, for now their goals are focused on the season at hand with the Blue Jays Hi-Liner Volleyball Opens Season at Tournament BCN XC: Solo but Strong Dutton s Valley Gallery of Photography/Special to the Times- Record The Barnes County North cross country team is made up of just one runner, sophomore Ashley McFadgen. McFadgen also plays for the Bison volleyball team. She is coached by first-year head coach Allyson Dockter. The Hi-Liner volleyball team, under the direction of first year Head Coach Mattie Cruff, recently went 4-2 at the East-West Invite volleyball tournament in Bismarck. Team members include Allysen Mathias, Lindsey Noeske, Macy Olstad, Cali Halgrimson, Alyssa Hatcher, Natalie Lemnus, Jadyn Dieterle, Josie Berntson, Samantha Ranisate, Megan Roswick, Grace Scherr, and Taryn Dieterle. The Hi-Liners play their first home match of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Hi-Liner Activity Center against Wahpeton. Dear Area Parents and Coaches, We want to hear about your student athletes accomplishments and share them in the Times-Record. 5 Valley City Times-Record Page 5B Falcons Find New Leaders on Field The roster of the Enderlin/Maple Valley football team includes Jonathan Anderson, Chance Bye, Donald Worrell, Garett Finger, Grady Karges, Ty Fountain, Connor Drogen, Tyler Zaun, Carson Hovelson, John Giller, Zane Gruba, Lain Combs, Cameron Yantis, Darian Walburn, Hunter Christoferson, Ty Combs, Colton Sorenson, Colton Wetch, Hunter Berntson, Michael Ripplinger, Zackery Nord, and Dakota Worrell. This fall the Enderlin/ Maple Valley football team has seen some big changes. After graduating a total of ten seniors, a new group of leaders is stepping out into the field, according to Falcons Head Coach Nathan Hoots. And Hoots has faith in those student athletes to set high goals. Our goal for this season is to be competitive week in and week out, Hoots If we can achieve that goal, we will give ourselves a chance to reach our other goal of making the playoffs. We graduated ten seniors last year, so several guys needed to step up into leadership roles and I m excited to see the guys that have taken that role and run with it, Hoots said, Also, we have many guys that are changing positions to fill the holes left by our excellent outgoing seniors. The players that changed roles have accepted that transition and we are looking forward to seeing how they do throughout the year. The seniors who graduated accounted for all but 150 of the team s total scrimmage yards, which Hoots said means saying the team lost a lot of players is an understatement. We have three returning starters on offense in Lain Coms, Colton Wetch, and Darian Walburn, Hoots We also have five retuning starters on defense, including Combs, Wetch, and Walburn, and Ty Combs who started as linebacker. Connor Drogen and Carson Hovelson split starting duties at cornerback last season. While the team doesn t return a lot of players, they do have some strengths in their two returning starting offensive linemen, We re hoping they can lead the way for us early on in the season as we integrate young guys on the field, Hoots Lain Combs returns as our leader in both sides of the ball. He has started on both sides of the bowl, for three years and now he makes a position change to the backfield in his senior season. We are looking forward to seeing what he, as well as our new quarterback, Chance Bye, can accomplish in our revamped backfield for Following Hoot s offensive philosophy means those players will focus on getting their power run game going and build off of and around that momentum. Hoots said defensively the team tries to be aggressive run stoppers, We are excited with what we have seen from our newcomers and are looking forward to seeing how they react the first time they get their first varsity snaps, Hoots added. Hoots said once again Region 1 will be strong, but the Falcons hope to find their place in the playoffs. They return from a 3-5 overall record last year, with a 2-5 Region 1A record. We are looking forward to a season filled with unknowns, Hoots Region 1 is once again very good, with several teams having the potential to occupy the four playoff spots. The quicker our young guys adjust to the speed of the varsity game, the bettter chances we have of being competitive week in and week out. Maple Valley Volleyball Ready for Action The Maple Valley volleyball team is back for its stronger than ever, with a lot of experienced players, according to Head Coach Alecia Killoran. I am excited to say that I have a longer list of returning players on my bench this year, Killoran This experience is what this team has needed and the strength that it has been missing. I look forward to watching these amazing young women fight the battles that our competition is going to bring. After our first two weeks of blood sweat and tears, the Maple Valley Raiders are ready and hungry for victory! The team lost two seniors to graduation: Tessa Schroeder and Sierra Wendt. We will be missing some senior dominance from last year as our big middle blocker Tessa Schroeder graduated, Killoran Sierra Wendt was also a go to player for us and our ball control mentality so her presence will be missed. Killoran believes she has found filled their positions and that the team is ready to go. Emma Bausch is in her fourth year as a starting varsity player. Killoran said Baasch will continue to bring control and a tough mindset to the court. This year s starting setter will be Kaylee Janish. I am impressed with her growth this summer not only with her skillset but also in the leadership department. Killoran said two-year starter Lindsey Pommerer is crucial to the court. She has a go-get-it attitude that leads many people to follow with a tenacious side, Killoran added. Killoran said Emma Tichy will continue with her role as a middle hitter but will also assist as an outside hitter. Sarah Richman is a two-year returner bringing experience to the team. Breanna Wilburn is the team s second-year starter at middle hitter. Breanna was a quiet deathly presence last year and I look forward to watching her become a vocal threat as much as MVVB, Page 6 Back row (L-R): Asst.Coach Alex Hoffmann, Emma Baasch, Courtney Hovelson, Emma Tichy, Breanna Walburn, Emma Schroeder, Madison Olson, Izabella Grenz, Head Coach Alecia Killoran. To help boys become men of courage and integrity who will pursue excellence in sports and life, who will develop an appreciation for the contributions everyone makes to the team, Roehrich Win or lose, Roehrich said the goal of the team is to have fun and to be the best they can. The roster of the Valley City High School football team includes Tucker Schonert, Austyn Thornton, Tate Sufficool, Sam Beierle, Kael Grebel, Derrek Diegel, Avery Bennefeld, Corey Nelson, Drew Zaun, Easton Hesch, Seth Gibson, Peyton Zaun, Luke Wendel, Noah Plagens, Joe Cummings, Austin Shape, Antonio Huffstutler, Jonah Schuldheisz, Sam Payne, Mitchel Taylor, Darrion Lafferty, Haydn Jones, Luis Casanova, Braeden Sieg, Jackson Mulder, Evan Mielke, Blaine Moffitt, Devyn Thornton, Jace Olson, Conner Remick, Nathan Eldridge, Carson McGough, Jonathan Redfearn, Zach Baumgartner, Carter Johnson, Riley Gerhardt, Jose Casanova, John Beutler, Cade Powers, Trevor Breske, Alex Robinson, Benton Murray, and Braxton Jorissen. The Valley City High School football team steps onto the field this year with a considerable change in the size of the team. According to Hi-Liner MVVB From 5 she is physically, Killoran In the right hitter position, Madison Olson worked well last year, according to Killoran. Madison settled in nicely last year as a right-side hitter and was our big power house, Killoran She will continue to be a strong threat this year. New to the starting varsity line-up is Courtney Hovelson. She has been working this summer on her middle skills and I am excited to put her abilities to use this season, Killoran Head Coach Scott Roehrich, the roster is made up of 43 student athletes. The team includes six seniors: Sam Beierle, Noah Plagens, Blaine Moffitt, Nathan Eldridge, Zach Baumgartner, John Beutler and Cade Powers. Roehrich said the The team will see some quick offenses in play this year, and Killoran said one of the Raiders weaknesses going up against those teams will be certain aspects of their defense. Our weakness this year is that our defense isn t quite as quick as we need it to be to defend some of the offenses that we will be up against this year, Killoran Killoran said her goals for the team lie in the post-season. My goal for this season is for my team to host another play-in match in the first round of regionals, Killoran What a great experience! And that includes representing themselves, their families, their school, and their community in a positive way, Roehrich adds. Roehrich is assisted by Coaches Davy Zinke, Aaron Heck, Tyler Thompson, and Ty Allen. Student managers include Rose Zeltinger, Bianca Debra, Eliza Johnson, and Abby Peterson.
