3 Rutherford County 4-H Fair General Rules 1. All entries are open to Rutherford County youth in the 4 th -12 th grade. Grade is determined by highest grade completed. Example: if you were enrolled in the 5 th grade on January 1, 2009, you will compete as a 5 th grader not a 6 th grader. 2. All entries (except animal entries) must be entered between noon and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 7 at Lane Agri-Park Community Center. Animal entries will follow guidelines specific to species. 3. Entries will only be accepted during entry hours listed in rule 2. No late entries will be accepted! 4. Entries and awards must be picked up between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 9 th. All entries not collected on Sunday will become property of Rutherford County Extension and will be discarded. All award premiums and ribbons not collected by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10 th will be forfeited. No premiums will be mailed. 5. When, in the opinion of the judges, an article is not worthy of a placing, no premium will be awarded. Example: One entry in a class does not guarantee a first place award. 6. All entries must be of the current year s crop or work (January 1, August 7, 2009) and be produced by the exhibitor. 7. Rutherford County Extension will not be responsible for any personal injury or property damage of any kind whatsoever received on the property or in conjunction with the Fair. 8. No person will be permitted to distribute advertising matter on the grounds without a permit from the Fair management. 9. The Fair management reserves the right to amend or add to these rules as they, in their judgment, may deem advisable. In the event of a conflict of general and special rules special rules will govern. 10. Contest rules will follow the rules of the highest governing body. 11. Anyone causing disruptions to Fair events may be asked to leave the property. 12. Tobacco and alcohol products are prohibited on the Lane Agri Park property. 2

4 Archery Competition Rules and Guidelines Archery competition is open to all Rutherford County youth (4 th -12 th grade) that have completed archery training offered through 4-H, Boys and Girls Club, School or other program. Previous archery experience is required. Fair management reserves the right to determine participation. Parent or guardian must be present during the archery competition. All shooters must use the Genesis bows and arrows provided by the Rutherford County 4-H Archery Group. No personal equipment allowed, with the exception of arm and finger protection. Divisions are as follows: Junior Division: 4 th & 5 th grade Junior High Division: 6 th -8 th grade Senior Division: 9 th -12 th grade All contestants will need to register by Wednesday, July 29 at 4:30 p.m. No entries will be accepted after July 29. Entry form is on page 5. RULES AND GUIDELINES 1. NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) Compound Target: 80 cm faces, 5-color face Distance: 10 meters and 15 meters Course of Fire: 1 end of 5 arrows from 10 meters, then 1 end of 5 arrows from 15 meters Time Limit: 4 minutes per 5 arrow end Scoring: 10-1 from the center outward. Tie breaks will follow the NGB Rules. Tie Breaker: In the event of a tie in any division, tied participants will shoot additional end of 5 arrows from 10 meters and 1 end of 5 arrows from 15 meters until the tie is broken. 3

5 2009 Rutherford County Archery Tournament Let s keep archery s safety record perfect! Shooting Format 1. Waiting Line: All archers remain behind the waiting line until signaled otherwise Whistles: 5 or more whistles signify an emergency. Archers must stop what they are doing, return arrows to the quiver, set-down their bow and walk behind the waiting line. 3. Practice End: Archers will shoot an un-scored practice end of 5 arrows at 10 meters Whistles: 2 whistles signify get bow archers walk to the bow rack, get their bow and place one foot on each side of the 10 meter shooting line. The bow s bottom should be placed bow on toes Whistle: 1 whistle directs the archer to shoot their 5 arrows within a 2- minute time limit. 6. After Shooting: After shooting 5 arrows, the archer will set-down the bow and walk behind the waiting line. 7. Equip. Failure: If an archer s bow or arrows become damaged, repairs or replacements must occur in a timely manner without delaying the tournament. A coach may help repair or replace the equipment Whistles: 3 whistles signify go get arrows archers walk to the target line to score and retrieve arrows. 9. Scoring Arrows: Arrows and target face should be untouched until all arrows have been scored and recorded by a judge. Scoring rings are marked on the targets, 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. An arrow missing the scoring rings is scored O. 10. Carrying Arrows: Then, with one archer at the target and the other safely behind the target line, arrows are removed and safely carried back to the quiver. Arrows are carried with points covered by one hand and the other hand around the shaft, below the vanes. The archer will then walk behind the waiting line. 11. Bounce outs: If an arrow bounces off the target, an official may immediately give the archer another arrow. Otherwise the range operator may have bounce-outs shot over after 10 and 15 meter shooting. 12. Move Quivers: When all archers have shot, scored, and retrieved their end of 5 arrows they will be directed to move their quivers on to the 15 meter shooting line Meters: Shooters will follow the same procedures to shoot 1 scoring ends of 5 arrows at 15 meters. 14. When finished: When finished, archers will sign their score card and leave them with the lane supervisors to deliver them to the scoring room. Archers must remain on the range until they ve signed their scorecards. 4

Pies, cakes and decorated cakes should be displayed whole. 5. Biscuits, cookies, cornmeal muffins, and fruit muffins should be a display of three on a paper plate covered with a zip top bag. 6. No premium will be given on articles not listed. 9 Clothing Contest Rules and Guidelines Clothing General Rules 1. Only youth in the 4 th -12 th grade (as of January 1 of the current year) will be allowed to enter this contest. 2. Each participant is limited to one entry per class. No duplicate items. 3. Entries must be clean and in new condition. Dirty entries will not be accepted. 4. All entries must have been constructed by the participant. 5. Appropriate construction methods should be used for the participant s age & skill level. 6. Shorts and jeans will be entered in the Active Sportswear class, not School Wear. 7. Participants who compete in this contest will be eligible to compete in the Central Region 4-H Clover Collection contest in September. Each participant is limited to one entry per class. No duplicate items. 3. All entries must have been grown by exhibitor. 4. Entries need to be displayed on a paper plate, with a quantity of three, except for green beans which need a group of ten pods. 5. Judging will be based on the following: a. Uniformity of size, shape and color. b. Freedom from defects due to insects, disease and mechanical injury. c. Trueness to type for variety. d. Proper state of maturity for table use. 15 Photography Contest Rules and Guidelines Photography General Rules 1. Only youth in the 4 th -12 th grade (as of January 1 of the current year) will be allowed to enter this contest. 2. Each participant is limited to one entry per class. No duplicate items. 3. All photos must have been taken after August 1, Photos must be taken by the participant making the entry. 5. Each entry must be a print no larger than 5 x7 and must not be mounted or framed. 6. Entries will be judged on quality and technique. 7. 16 Livestock Show General Rules and Guidelines The livestock show is open to all Rutherford County youth in the 4-12 grades (as of January 1 of the current year). The livestock show consists of classes for beef cattle, sheep, and goats. Premiums awarded will be based upon donations received. Show Rules & Requirements 1. Animals may begin to arrive after 11:30 a.m. All animals must be entered in the show between 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. 2. Health rules are as follows: All animals must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection issued within 90 days. 3. Rutherford County 4-H has the right to refuse entry to any animal that is showing signs of a contagious disease. 4. All animals entered at owner s risk! The Rutherford County 4-H Fair will not be responsible for accidents. 5. No straw bedding allowed. Exhibitors are allowed to bring saw dust or shavings for bedding. 6. Animals may be removed from the fairgrounds immediately following the show. 7. All sheep and goats must have a USDA approved Scrapie Tag in order to be shown. 8. UT publication (EC979), Guidelines for Conducting Junior Beef and Sheep Shows in Tennessee, will be consulted to cover any rules not specifically covered in this fair book. 18 Goats Show Rules 1. Any breed or cross breed of goat is eligible to show. 2. The minimum for this show has been set at 30 pounds. No animals will be allowed to show that weigh less than this. 3. All sheep and meat goats must have a USDA approved Scrapie Tag in order to be shown. Dairy goats may use scrapie tags or their ADGA unique breeder s tattoo in the left ear. Exhibitors will use their USDA Scrapie Tag number as the tag number for all entries. 4. Goats will be mouthed to determine age. 5. Wether kids must not show any testicular tissue. Animals having testicular tissue will be dismissed. No bucks/billies will be allowed in or around the barn area. 6. All goats must be polled or have their horns tipped or cushioned with a material to help prevent injury to the exhibitor. Show Classes 1. Junior Showmanship (4-5 grade) 2. Junior High Showmanship (6-8 grade) 3. Senior High Showmanship (9-12 grade) Meat Goat Classes 1. Market Goats (Wether and doe kids raised for slaughter. These animals must have their milk teeth to show in this division) 2. Doe Kid (Does that have their milk teeth that will be raised for replacement animals) 3. Yearling Doe (Does that have no more than two sets of adult teeth (four large teeth) raised for replacement animals) Dairy Goat Classes 1. Senior Does (fresh does over 12 months ) 2. Junior Does (does under 24 months that have never freshened) 17

19 Poultry Show General Rules and Guidelines The poultry show is open to all Rutherford County 4-H ers enrolled in the Chick Chain project. These 4-H ers each received 25 chicks on March 23 and have provided care for them throughout the summer. The poultry show provides these participants an opportunity to showcase their birds and share their experiences from the summer. For more information about the Chick Chain project, contact Extension Agent Michael Shirley at Premiums awarded will be based upon donations received. Show Rules & Requirements 1. Animals may begin to arrive at the livestock barn after 7:30 a.m. All animals must be entered in the show by 8:45 a.m. 2. Participants are required to enter a pen of five pullets, a minimum one-page essay, and a record book for judging. NOTE: Record book and essay are due Friday, August 7 between noon and 6:30 p.m. and may be dropped off at the Lane Agri-Park Community Center. 3. All animals must be free of disease, colds, and parasites. Rutherford County 4-H has the right to refuse entry to any animal that is showing signs of a contagious disease. 4. All animals will meet the requirements set by the TN Dept. of Agriculture. 5. Each pen of five pullets will be auctioned off during the Chick Chain Sale at the conclusion of the show. 6. Animals may be removed from the fairgrounds immediately following the sale. The grand champion pen of five will be asked to remain on the fairgrounds until 6:00 p.m. for display. 7. 20 Egg Contest General Rules and Guidelines 1. The egg contest is open to all Rutherford County 4-H ers in the 4-12 grades (as of January 1 of the current year). 2. Entries must be received at the Lane Agri-Park Community Center between noon and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 7, Participants are limited to one entry of one dozen eggs of like color. 4. Eggs must be produced by poultry that have been under the direct care of the entrant. 5. Eggs must be entered in either a styrofoam or paper egg carton. 6. Eggs will be judged on exterior egg quality. 7. If there are at least five entries of white eggs and at least five entries of brown eggs, we will split the egg contest into two categories and award a first, second and third in each category. 8. Premiums will be awarded based on awards received. FACE Contest General Rules and Guidelines Do you enjoy watching or hunting wildlife? If so, then the 4-H FACE for Wildlife contest is for you. FACE for wildlife means Food And Cover Establishment for wildlife. To enter this contest you must plant a food plot and monitor it throughout the summer. You may win prizes, but most importantly, you will be enhancing habitat for wildlife. This year, six Rutherford County 4-H ers are competing for the title of Best Food Plot. Visit the exhibit hall to see display boards that were prepared by these participants.
