We had competition, but attendees never seem to complain about the food! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and getting in some flying or aviation related activity! Prez Sez The chapter has purchased some new bookcases for the "library area" in our Stevensville hangar. Volunteers are needed to assemble them. Let me know if you'd enjoy helping out at a Saturday assembly and we can grill some hot dogs. All assistance is appreciated! Don Day in the Sun June 27 was Airport Heritage Day, honchoed by famous names like Dave Hedditch and Wendy Bye and the leaders at North Star Aviation. It was at the Ravalli County Airport (6S5) in Hamilton and EAA517 helped. The event was Sponsored by the Ravalli County Pilots' Association, the Ravalli County Aviation Safety Foundation and the Ravalli County Museum. There was a Pancake Breakfast, static display of antique aircraft and warbirds, a historical information booth, (Continued Page-2) Is this real? Zane Rebenstorff leaned back, remembering years of flight joy. A lean man, Mr. Rebenstorff is surrounded by memories, artifacts, models and family. Editor's Desk He gazed and gazed and gazed. The financial aspects of homebuilding are great because, when you sell, you can almost get your materials costs out of anything you build. You will save big money over buying new. 2 Page 2 July, 2009 a skydiving demonstration, radio controlled aircraft and EAA Young Eagle Flights. Young Eagles ran well into the afternoon accompanied by Flight Simulator exercises. The day was capped with a USO Hangar Dance. I could do this. Oh, Yes! I could. Says Young Eagles EAA Chair,Gary Weyermann, A YE Rally like this is pretty easy -- just jump in a plane and fly, especially when you have folks like Steve and Sherry Rossiter keeping all the ground activities and paperwork under control. Holy smokes! Things on the way down are looking up. Weyermann's thoughts were intriguing inasmuch as the Rossiters claimed that the hard part was the flying. Says Weyermann, The paperwork (that was the Rossiters) can really be a pain, and I think we have learned some ways to approach it next time to help reduce the workload. It's alive! The Let's Fly Missoula LLC flying club was born on July 1, By the time you read this the official formation of the club will have taken place. We will start operation with a Cessna 172 and a Beechcraft C-35 Bonanza as the faster cross country machine. The third airplane has not yet been specifically identified, but will be an older CAR or FAR certificated airplane that qualifies as a Light Sport Aircraft (Ercoupe, Piper J series, Taylorcraft, or Aeronca most likely). The target is to have one airplane for every 10 club members. The club is a "not for profit" LLC designed to provide a variety of aircraft for members to fly to meet the different demands of different missions. Members are literally owners of the aircraft and we are looking for more members. The aircraft will be based in Missoula. In addition to chapter members there were four guests in evidence, brought near by radio, TV and newspaper advance announcements. Lorenzen explains EAA and EAA517. Smooooth building with clecos is a marvel seen by few. The meeting Monday evening, June 15 at the Stevensville hangar was called Public Awareness Night. Guest Howard Chaliner swaps thoughts with member Larye Parkins on how building can fit a small budget.

3 Page 3 July, 2009 A thing of exquisite beauty, the Aten control panel demonstrated how care begets wisdom in making a safe aircraft. President Lorenzen explained the contributions of the national organization. Aten's bird brings us together. Conversation about the craft was constant. In conviviality, things were made even better by cookies and coffee. All these brought out questions on homebuilding. Visitors wanted to know just why the cost of membership was so low. Howard Challiner of East Missoula expressed poverty concomitant with an earnest desire to build something somewhere, sometime, somehow and with help. The one thing, he says, is... is it has to be safe. The way to safety was demonstrated by Laurens Ackerman and Ray Aten as the meeting migrated next door to the hangar where the two were building their Zodiac aircraft. Continued from Page-1 can make the difference between owning or not owning. Rebenstorff explains that team building is another great option. Team building can be smooth for everyone involved. He explains that the social benefits are marvelous because the camaraderie encourages each participant to move faster and with more confidence. A team has the advantage of more eyes and ears for research. That research can yield new construction philosophies, new places to get materials, even new places to craft, build and assemble. He has worked on more than fifteen projects including one he completed for himself with the help of EAA Chapter 52. That one is a VolksPlane with Volkswagen engine. If he were to start a new plane today, it would be another Volks- Plane. That first solo flight... He paused emotionally, There is no pleasure in life that compares to your first solo flight. Nothing! The Rebenstorff VolksPlane. He was just as enthusiastic about the first flight of a plane you have built yourself. It even beats chocolate! Rebenstorff was adamant about sharing the joy of personal flight. He explains that to encourage aeronautical interest we should approach science teachers in grade and high school. Young Eagles is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to giving a hand to young people. EAA has a place for everyone. He pointed out that the national EAA organization has hundreds of ways to begin flight and the way in is easy. You can call, you can write, you can , you can find the guidance of an EAA friend. EAA will help you know your woods. For instance, he says, ask about door skins. EAA Chapter 517 had disbanded for a while. Zane and pals contacted the national to start a new chapter but, instead, were offered the original Hamilton chapter's charter and the contents of its treasury. The team never looked back and hundreds have benefited.

4 Page 4 July, 2009 Looking for a Home Jim Patterson of Corvallis has a plane for sale. It is a 99 Challenger II with a 503 Rotax engine that has 126 hours total time. The plane is N-numbered and has always been hangared. Mr. Patterson is asking $12,000. No maintenance and some rodent damage places her slightly in the basket case category but certainly not all the way. The fabric is fine. The dope is brittle and needs a rejuvenator coat. It needs a complete inspection of all systems and an unknown amount of work/maintenance. I believe this aircraft is seriously underpriced. AC is in Salmon, ID. Despite the holiday, our Hangar will continue its practice of First Saturday on July 4th. This recognizes that people in attendance may vary month to month, and the numbers may vary, but that fostering social interaction is a priority year round. Gallatin Valley Hangar. July 4 - EAA Flight Festival, Townsend Airport Breakfast from 8:00am 11:00am. Young Eagle Flights from 10:00 1:00pm. The city of Townsend will be having a picnic at Heritage Park in town. Meetup A joint meeting of MPA Five Valleys Hangar and EAA Chapter 517 is scheduled for Monday, July 20th, 7pm, in the conference room at the Missoula Airport Terminal. The presentation is entitled "Is there a Light Sport Aircraft in your future?" The presenter is MPA- FVH President Steve Rossiter, who will discuss such issues as LSA pilot requirements, aircraft qualifications, operational restrictions, and which of the many models of LSA seem to be garnering the most attention. There will be ample time for questions at the end of the presentation. We will also offer a "Split the Pot" opportunity for those who wish to participate. This is a great opportunity to learn more about why "the sport pilot" designation and the production of LSA aircraft has been attracting so much attention in the last couple years. EAA members are finally able to see EAA's 1929 Ford Tri-Motor. By 1957 there were only nine Ford Tri-Motors left anywhere in the world. Missoula had four.
