1 DEAR DANCE TEAM COACHES: We are thrilled to announce the Third Annual DE PERE DANCE OFF! A lot of thought and planning goes into making this event unique, exciting, and worthwhile. Our two years were amazing, and we will make this year even better! NEW Solo, duet, trio and small groups divisions have been added and divisions will be separated by school enrollment. WHO IS INVITED? Scholastic and All-Star teams are invited to compete in Pom, Kick, Jazz and Hip-Hop. At the end of the day, top teams are announced in each category (e.g. the highest-scoring pom routine of the day). The four teams announced enter a final round of encore performances. 5 OVERALL RULES RULES It is important that coaches and all team members understand and abide by all safety regulations. All National Federation Rules will apply. No jewelry is allowed. If such religious or medical medals must be worn, they should be taped to the body under the uniform. 1. All hair should be fastened with soft holders and cosmetic holders such as hair spray or mousse. 2. Fingernails should be cut to a length so they are not visible above the fingertips when looking at the palm. 4. If pants are worn they must be hemmed so the bottom of the pants leg is not so long as to cause a safety issue. 5. Teams are limited to one minute for their entrances. Entrances are not judged. INTERRUPTION OF PERFORMANCE 1. If, in the opinion of the tournament officials, a team s routine is interrupted because of failure of tournament equipment, facilities, or other factors attributable to the competition rather than the team, the team affected should stop the routine. The team will be allowed to present its entire routine. The judges will disregard the partial interrupted routine and only score the team on their routine as it is done uninterrupted. 2. In the event the team s routine is interrupted because of failure of the team s own equipment, the team must either continue the routine or withdraw from the competition. 3. In the event of an injury, tournament official or the coach reserves the right to stop the routine. The team will be allowed to present its routine from the place in the routine where the interruption occurred or the entire routine. The person whom the injury occurred to will not be able to return to the floor.. GENERAL RULES 1. Each team will have a maximum of 2 ½ minutes for all routines. Timing will begin with the first note of music or motion and end with the last note of music or the last movement. 2. All participants must be official members of the school they are representing. 3. Entrances and exits will not be judged unless they are included in the overall time period. 4. All music needs to be ed to deperedanceoffmusic@gmail.com by Nov 7 th. Please see the handout with directions on submitting music.
6 DIVISION SPECIFICS: Pom Category- Emphasis on synchronization and visual effect. Poms must be used for 80% of the routine. No props. High Kick Category - Must have at least 50 kicks, with 20 being high, with an emphasis on quality of kicks and visual effect. Jazz Category - Emphasis on technical moves, style, and execution. Hip Hop Category - Emphasis on sharp, synchronized choreography; street dance or hip hop style. No props. NATIONAL FEDERATION RULES It is every coach s obligation to know and adhere to the safety rules at all times. If you have any questions about a move, stunt, jump, and/or music please contact either the National Federation or WACPC directly. Please bring documentation from them with you if you have been cleared to do a specific move. Listed below are a few highlights of these rules: Glitter: Glitter that does not readily adhere to the hair, face, uniform, costume or body is illegal. Jewelry: No jewelry is allowed. This includes all piercing (tongue, belly button, etc.) If religious or medical medals must be worn, they must be taped to the chest (without the chain) under the uniform. Judges register penalties at the in the hole area. Make sure your team has removed these items BEFORE they report to avoid a violation. Hair: Hair must be fastened with soft holders and clips that close flat to the head. Spring-action barrettes are illegal. Hair ribbons, scrunches, etc. should be fastened securely. Any hair fastener or decoration on the floor, which becomes a safety hazard, will result in a safety hazard per infraction. Hair on the shoulders can become a situational hazard. Footwear: Athletes must wear appropriate footwear at all times. In the event that a participant loses a shoe(s), they may need to remove the missing shoe and their self from the competition area to replace the missing shoe before returning to the performance area. This also applies to shoes that come untied. In the event an athlete does not leave the floor to correct footwear coming off or coming untied, a technical judge and/or coach will call a time out to correct the hazard and have the performance restart. No penalty will be assessed for a coach s time out. Fingernails: Length of nails, including artificial nails, must be kept at an appropriate length (short, near the end of the fingers). Performance Hazards: If pom, sign, laces, or hair decoration is in a position on the performance area, no point deduction will occur if a team member picks it up or removes it before it becomes a hazard (A hazard trips, slips, or falls due to an object on the floor). The deliberate placement of a pom or sign on the floor or mat as part of the routine is not a violation if it does not present a hazard-because the performers have knowledge of its existence, and these acts are expected and practiced. If performers step on the pom or sign, it then could become a hazard and could result with an infraction. Any team that displays a flagrant violation in safety will be disqualified from the competition. Any team member refusing to remove jewelry, glitter or make any other corrections in the hole may not enter onto the performing area.
