14 Athlete 1 (frames 1 & 6) Trustworthy and the most consistent, the leadoff athlete will help the rest of the team get a good read on the lane conditions. This player is positive, energetic and helps motivate the team throughout competition.

15 Athlete 2 (frames 2 & 7) Trusting and comfortable in making moves based off Athlete 1 s information, this player is positive and will be able to keep the energy level of the team positive and upbeat.

16 Athlete 3 (frames 3 & 8) Steady and reliable in filling frames, this player is levelheaded and able to keep a positive outlook.

17 Athlete 4 (frames 4 & 9) Fundamentally solid, this player will share the weight of pressure toward the end of a game while being able to strike to set up the anchor athlete.

21 Physical Preparation Warm Up A dynamic warm up can transition an athlete from rest to high intensity exercise over a short amount of time. Reasons for warm-up include: Increase heart rate and blood flow to the muscles Increase body s core temperature Improve oxygen intake Improve skill accuracy and coordination Increase rate and force of muscle contraction Decrease risk for injuries

22 Static vs. Dynamic Static Stretching can be harmful to the body due to overstretching muscles before adequate body temperature and blood flow has been reached Dynamic Stretching utilizes movement that is specific to a sport or movement pattern in order to increase flexibility and body temperature of a particular body part.

41 Lane Surfaces Characteristics Sward Harness Rocker A Sward Hardness Rocker measures the hardness or softness of the surface in multiple areas. The information is used to determine how much friction the lane surface has.

43 Pattern Shape, Length, and Volume Overview When oil is applied to the lane, it is applied in terms of: volume (amount) shape (width of lane) distance (length of lane) Look at the oil pattern as being three dimensional height, width and length

44 Pattern Shape Recreational Designed to give the ball easier access to the pocket The oil ratio on recreational patterns is about 8 to 1 or higher, also known as house patterns

45 Applies a high concentration of oil widthwise across the center and less toward the outside Creates hook when the ball is thrown toward the outside part of the lane and hold when thrown to the inside

46 Pattern Shape Sport Sports patterns are designed to reward good shot-making The oil ratio on Sport patterns is 4:1 or less

56 Ball Motion Ball speed refers to the rate of speed that the ball travels down the lane. Friction between the ball surface and the lane helps the ball slow down creating hook potential. The faster the ball speed, the less time it has to travel down the lane, decreasing hook potential. The slower the ball speed, the more time it has to travel down the lane, increasing hook potential.

62 Track Flare Track flare is created when the core of the ball rotates the surface of the ball onto a new area with each revolution. Track flare derives from differential. Once in motion, the PAP will migrate around the RG plane that it started on, causing the ball to roll on a different part of the ball surface, creating track flare

71 Physical Game Coaches should use basic concepts and mechanics to achieve personal goals Everyone has unique physical abilities and ways of accomplishing tasks or motions Be patient and positive through the process, each bowler develops at their own pace There is always a chance, particularly under pressure, that the body reverts to old habits When coaching - identify one or two major concerns, that when corrected, will show immediate improvement

75 Start The start is the Initial movement of the ball and/or arm swing The arm and ball move so the elbow is over the ball-side foot Shoulder stays in place Elbow remains slightly bent The overall shape of the ball motion is rounded

77 Approach (Start to Finish & Timing) The Motion Bowlers should resist the temptation to physically control the direction of the arm swing During the approach the arm swing delivers power generated by the legs Tempo should be smooth and aggressive to increase ball speed Timing is coordinating the movement of the body and the ball throughout the approach, and delivery Perfect or proper timing lives within each athlete and is different for everyone Coaches should develop personal timing that maximizes each athlete s ability

78 Finish Position Posture Chin, knee, and toe in alignment Spine angled slightly forward Knees bent for leverage Opposite arm to the side for balance Follow-through above the bowler s head

80 Release Straight Ball - Ideal for picking up spares thumb toward the pins, fingers behind the ball, follow through with the palm up Hook Ball - Ideal for a strike ball delivery thumb exits first, wrist rotates, fingers exit last more strike potential because of increased angle to the pocket

81 The Approach and the Coach s Eye Correct evaluation of the athlete is important to engineering a change The #1 factor to look for is consistency We strongly recommends using video for analysis

82 Mental Game Making Proper Choices Athletes always have a choice in their actions The ability to control emotions is paramount to success (at all levels) Training athletes to think and consider options will keep them calm, focused and ready to compete A strong mental game and the ability to make proper choices will separate the elite from the amateurs If the athletes thought before a shot is negative, the result has a greater chance of being negative
