X-Box Word Problems Model Problem (a) Every month, Omar buys pizzas to serve at a party for his friends. In May, he bought three more than twice the number of pizzas he bought in April. If Omar bought 15 pizzas in May, how many pizzas did he buy in April? (b) During the 2007 baseball season, Wade was up to bat 10 more times than his teammate Dwight. Dwight batted 17 fewer times than another teammate, Ellis. The three players were up to bat a total of 1650 times. How many times did Ellis come to bat? Practice Problems 1) Pam is playing with red and black marbles. The number of red marbles she has is three more than twice the number of black marbles she has. She has 42 marbles in all. How many red marbles does Pam have? 1

Rectangle and Perimeter Word Problems Perimeter The number of units it takes to measure the outside of a figure. Rectangle: Triangle: P = 2l + 2w P = add up all the sides Area The number of square units it takes to completely fill a figure. Rectangle: Triangle: A = l w A = ½b h Model Problem a) The length of a rectangle is 6 feet more than the width of the rectangle. The perimeter is equal to 38 feet. (a) Find both length and width. (b) Determine the area of the rectangle. b) In a triangle, one side is three times as large as the smallest side and the third side is 40 feet more than the smallest side. The perimeter of the triangle is 184 feet. Find the measurements of all three sides. 2

Find the number of hours he volunteered at each charity. 6) The perimeter of a rectangle is 40 feet. The length is 2 more than 5 times the width. Find the dimensions of the rectangle. 7) Hungry Bear Cookies baked a total of 98 cookies of three kinds chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and peanut butter. The number of oatmeal raisin was twice the number of peanut butter. The number of chocolate chip was 3 more than the number of oatmeal. Find the number of cookies of each type. 8) Rainbo Bread Company delivered a total of 180 loaves of bread to three markets. Savemart received 12 more loaves than Vons. Ralphs received 6 more loaves than Savemart. Find the number of loaves delivered to each market. Summary Perimeter Word Problem The width of a rectangle is 4ft smaller than 3 times its length.
