PRE-SEASON PRE-SEASON: EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACTION EAP reviewed and updated SPEED SKATING CANADA NOTES / COMMENTS Location of all emergency equipment confirmed Coach/First Responder First Aid Qualifications Current Call and Charge Persons Scheduled for all practices First aid kit fully stocked no expired product Facility regulations and procedures are confirmed Coach/First Responder briefing Parent briefing Skater briefing Simulation planned PRE-SEASON: SKATER AND PARENT CHECKLIST Parent/skater meeting to present club policies Return to play after injury (including concussion) Safety equipment Behaviour Signed acceptance of club policy by all members Return to play guidelines presented Training objectives presented Links to resources provided Skater medical history (including concussion) collected PRE-SEASON: OTHER Review SSC and Branch regulations for changes Safety requirements Racing rules Competition formats Selection criteria

3 PRE-SEASON: CLUB EQUIPMENT CRASH PROTECTION Required level of protection identified for each training group Volunteers are trained on installation and storage Sufficient number of pads for required level of crash protection Covers are in good repair no rips or tears Zippers are in good condition Venting is open Foam is not showing signs of degradation not crumbling, indentation return normally Pads are clean dust/mud from storage or transport removed Transport carts are in good repair SKATES Laces in good condition No damage to boots which impact integrity All skates are sharp Rocker, bend and offset are appropriate for first time skaters HELMETS Helmets have been replaced within past 5 years (ThinkFirst Recommendation) No cracks or dents in helmet Straps adjust properly Inside foam is in good condition.

BEFORE PRACTICE BEFORE PRACTICE: FACILITY SPEED SKATING CANADA CELL PHONE Cell phone is charged There is cellular reception on ice Phone is on the designated person EMERGENCY RESPONSE Designated call and charge people in EAP will be present ( if not, a parent that has been briefed on EAP and will stay in the stands, as to not be alone) First aid kit is fully stocked Health records are available Pocket SCAT2 is on person In the event of cut, gauze pads/gloves are in pocket Whistle to blow down practice available ENVIRONMENT Weather is appropriate for training Lighting is appropriate for training Temperature is appropriate for training CRASH PROTECTION Sufficient pads available for level of skater/planned skater Pads are in good repair (no major cuts/holes, properly sticking velcro, pads are not frozen or water logged) PRACTICE EQUIPMENT Blocs are available and in good repair Cones/other objects used for drills and games are available and in good repair Water is available if needed for practice

5 BEFORE PRACTICE: SKATERS Skaters are appropriately dressed for session SKATES Skates are in good repair Properly laced, no loose/hanging laces, feet are comfortable Blades are sharp Rocker, bend and offset is appropriate for skaters SKATERS HAVE ALL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Helmet (fits properly) Neck protector (attached around neck) Eye protection (shatter resistant, properly attached) Gloves/mitts (leather or cut resistant material) Knee protection (Knee pad or built in, not hard plastic) Shin protection Heels and toes of blades are rounded Cut resistant suit (elite skaters) Ice left frosted in designated crash zones SKATERS HEALTH Skater fatigue level is acceptable for planned training Previously injured athletes have clearance to return to training No skaters are showing signs or symptoms of injury (including concussion) Skaters have water for hydration during practices

COACH ON-ICE INSPECTION Crash pads installation Appropriate positioning (see level of protection) Not stuck to the ice Attached to one another (no gaps); softer foam in front, harder behind; will not tip over; Bricked, when multiple layers used Vents up Zippers are slightly open (if no vents) OTHER All gates are properly closed Skate guards are clear of skating areas First aid kit is on-ice or available rink side (without exiting ice) No dirt/debris on ice No major holes, ruts or heaves in the ice Blocs are loose All hazards (including water bottles, buckets, squeegees) are clear of crash zone (middle of ice or off-ice in players bench is best) Designated charge/call persons are available Ice left frosted in designated crash zones
