2 CLUB COMPETITION MARCH 7th & 8th, 2014 INFORMATION SHEET For advice about preparing for competition, i.e., dress, program, music, etc., see your coach or Regina Barr, Skating Director. PLEASE watch the bulletin board for additional information, dates and details. Entry Forms: Competition Times Practice Sessions: Music: Due in the club office no later than 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 18th The competition will run from approximately 1 pm-7 pm on Friday March 7 th and from 8 am-6 pm on Saturday March 8 th depending on the number of entries. Events may be scheduled for either day. Basic Skills programs will practice starting the week of February 4, Practices will be held during basic skills group time, Tuesdays & Thursdays. Talk to your child s coach with any questions about practice times. The club will provide music for compulsory dances and Basic Skills Program 1-8 events. For all other events with music, pre-recorded CD s or mini disks will be accepted. A program tape CD or mini disk must be submitted, as rink side computer system may not be available for use on the day of the competition. Each CD or mini-disk must have only one track recorded on it and must be clearly marked with name, event, and music length. Due to compatibility and reliability reasons no music may be submitted on re-recordable CD-RW discs. Unplayable music media may result in disqualification from your event.. PLEASE PLACE MUSIC IN OFFICE MAIL SLOT NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, MARCH 6th. Please make a duplicate for practice after this date and bring to competition as a back up in case of an emergency. Dress: Please be aware that any item not securely attached to your costume (i.e., hair ribbons, bobby pins and scarves) may fall off and cause unsafe ice conditions. While you might want to wear a special dress, please be aware that this is a competition, not a show, and the following rules from the USFS rulebook will apply: Clothing of the competitors must be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing may, however, reflect the character of the music. Men must wear trousers no tights; ladies in dance events must wear a skirt. However, this does not apply to showcase or similar pairs events where costumes and props are encouraged. Videos: Details will be posted as soon as possible. A high-quality professional video photographer will be taping all events. Still photographs from video will be available for purchase. Awards: Medals will be awarded to the top four (4) skaters in each event. If no competition is available in a category (i.e. only one skater or team entered), the skater may be given the opportunity to exhibit but only if time allows and no medal or trophy will be awarded. All competitors and their families are invited to the Awards Ceremonies, which will be held at the end of each day. All trophies, medals, competition ribbons and certificates will be awarded and refreshments will be served. Friday competitors will have an Awards Ceremony after the competition ends on Friday, March 7 th. Saturday competitors will have an Awards Ceremony after the competition ends on Saturday, March 8 th. 2

3 CLUB COMPETITION SPECIAL AWARDS (Specific requirements are detailed on pages 5 through 10 of the application.) JUNIOR CLUB TROPHIES: JOHN B. THAYER FREESKATING TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Thayer Trophy freestyle event for girls or boys who have not reached their 10th birthday by March 1, TINA FURLONG TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Tina Furlong freestyle event for girls 12 and over (by March 1, 2014). Skaters must have passed Preliminary Freestyle, but no higher. DON LAWS TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Don Laws Trophy Freestyle event for boys and girls. Skaters must not be younger than 10 years or older than 14 years (by March 1, 2014). Don Laws, a longtime coach at PSC&HS, with his lifelong dedication to the sport of figure skating, has inspired many. JUNIOR CLUB COMPETITION TROPHIES: Awarded to the winner of the highest freestyle event skated (Well Balanced Program Track only) at the Junior Club Competition. HAMMER MEMORIAL TROPHY: awarded to the winner of the Pre-Preliminary Girls event (Well Balanced Program Track only). Donated by Maude White/ Old York Road Skating Club in memory of Maude White s parents. BLANCHE MYCEK MEMORIAL TROPHY: awarded to the winner of the No Test Girls Freeskating event. Donated by Maude White in memory of Blanche Mycek, former staff member. BISHOP TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Bishop Trophy Girls Similar Pairs event. Skaters must have passed their Pre-Preliminary Moves in the Field test but not passed higher than the Preliminary Freestyle test. P.I. MYERS TROPHY: Awarded to the winners of the P. I. Myers Girls Similar Pairs event for skaters who have passed Pre-Juvenile Moves in the Field or above. JEAN IRVING TROPHY: Awarded to the winners of the highest Basic Skills Similar Pairs event skated. Named in honor of Jean Irving by the Junior Club Committee in recognition of Jean s more than 50 years as a Junior Club volunteer. CHARLES FETTER TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Showcase event for either Pre-Preliminary or Preliminary (depending on the division of the lowest group of showcase skaters). Named in honor of Charles Fetter whose creativity has added so much to PSC & HS. PAM SCHNEIDER TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Showcase event for Pre-Juvenile and above, (depending on the division of the middle group of showcase skaters). Donated in honor of Pam Schneider whose boundless energy transforms skating s hard work into fun. SHOWCASE EVENT TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Showcase event for the no-test level Showcase group. JOAN THOMPSON DAY MEMORIAL TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the highest level of Moves in the Field events skated at the Junior Club Competition. LACHMAN TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Preliminary solo dance event. Named in memory of Eileen Lachman, long time adult skater at PSC&HS. KAINE DANCE TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the Bronze solo dance event. Named in honor of Thomas H. Kaine, ice dancing and skating coach at PSC&HS since 1981, for his artistry, enthusiasm and love of this aspect of the sport. GERTRUDE H. MYERS JUNIOR DANCE TROPHY: Awarded to the winner of the highest solo dance event skated. Named in honor of Eliza Miller s mother, Gertrude Myers. FRANK M. MYCEK MEMORIAL TROPHY: Awarded to the skater who has received the most points above the passing average on a unanimously judged test during the twelve months preceding the competition. Tests considered are the Pre-Juvenile and Juvenile Freestyle, the Pre-Juvenile and Juvenile Moves and the Bronze and Pre-Silver Dance tests. 3

4 IMPROVEMENT PRIZES: Both a boy and a girl in each of the sessions (Basic Skills and Low) are selected who have shown the greatest improvement during the year. It is based on effort, enthusiasm, sportsmanship and interest in skating shown throughout the year. There is a dance improvement prize awarded as well. THE CAMP SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD: The winner is selected from the Low Session skaters. The PSC&HS Skating Director, the Junior Club supervisors and coaches determine the winner. The winner is the skater who, through his/her enthusiasm for the sport and encouragement of fellow skaters, heightens the spirit of team and love of the sport for all exemplified by Barbara Camp s continual dedication to the PSC&HS. SPORTSMANSHIP TROPHY: the winner is selected from the High Session skaters. The PSC&HS Skating Director, the Junior Club supervisors and coaches determine the winner. The winner is the skater who, through his/her enthusiasm for the sport and encouragement of fellow skaters, heightens the spirit of team and love of the sport for all both within the Club and while representing our Club in other competitions and events. ADULT TROPHIES: THE FETTER NOVICE DANCE TROPHY: awarded to the winner of Adult Pre-Bronze Dance THE MEYERS TROPHY: awarded to the winner of Adult Bronze Dance THE MOLTON TROPHY: awarded to the winner of Adult Silver Dance STAN and SALLY URBAN DANCE TROPHY: awarded to the winner of Adult Pre-Gold Dance For list of Adult Pro-Am Events see pages

5 2014 PSC&HS CLUB COMPETITION Composition of Events Basic Skills Open to skaters who are working on Basic Skills levels 1 through 8 and subject to eligibility as noted below. Please note that Basic Skills events may be scheduled for either Friday or Saturday depending on the number of competition entries. Eligibility: The PSC&HS Junior Club competition is open ONLY to PSC&HS members who are current eligible (ER 1.00) members of either the Basic Skills Program and/or are full members of U.S. Figure Skating. Eligibility will be based on skill level as of closing date of entries. All Basic Skills 1-8 skaters must skate at highest level passed or one level higher and NO official U.S. Figure Skating tests may have been passed including MIF or individual dances. It is very important to the success of the competition that skaters are placed in the correct divisions. If, for whatever reason, it is discovered that a skater has been placed in a category that is below their class level, the Director of Skating, Junior Club Co-Chairs and referee will have the option to move the skater into the proper division, even if this has to be done the day of the competition. This will ensure that every event is as fair as possible to the competitors. Please be sure to check for the coach s signature confirming the level of the skater. BASIC PROGRAM EVENT: BASIC 1 8 Format: The skating order of the required elements is optional. The elements are not restricted as to the number of times the element is executed or length of glides, number of revolutions, etc. unless otherwise specified. Vocal music is allowed. Skaters may compete at the highest level they have passed, or skate up to one level higher. Max 2 spins: Two upright spins, change of foot optional, no flying entry (Min 3 revolutions) Connecting moves and steps should be demonstrated throughout the program Skaters may not have passed tests higher than U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills free skating badge tests Basic Skills Showcase Individual program created by coach to own music. No required elements in Showcase events. Emphasis is on theatrical and entertainment value of the performance. Costumes and props are encouraged to illustrate the act, though props are not required. Props are limited to those that skaters can carry onto the ice themselves (in one trip and set up in no more than 30 seconds). Live props, those with flames/smoke or any substance that will alter the surface of the ice are not permitted, and feathers, glitter, etc. must be used with caution. No shaving cream, whipped cream or wet mops may be used. Skater may not be given off ice assistance during the performance. Music with words allowed. May not have passed Pre-Preliminary MIF 1 min -1 min 30 sec +/- 10 sec Basic Skills Duet Showcase (Formerly known as Basic Skills Similar Pairs) This is open to any combination of 2 Basic Skills level skaters. Individual program created by coach to own music Event will be judged with the same guidelines as the individual Showcase event listed above. May not have passed Pre-Preliminary MIF 1 min -1 min 30 sec +/- 10 sec Basic Skills Group Showcase This is open to any group of Basic Skills level skaters (3 or more). Individual program created by coach to own music Event will be judged with the same guidelines as the individual Showcase event listed above. May not have passed Pre-Preliminary MIF 1 min -1 min 30 sec +/- 10 sec Basic Skills Interpretive (Extemporaneous Improvisation) Skaters will be judged on the use of the music chosen by the committee and the use of edges, footwork, jumps, spins to the rhythm and character of the music. Skaters will listen (to the music three times in a dressing room prior to taking the ice. During warm-up the music will vary in length depending on the skaters level, but will not exceed 1 1/2 minutes in length. Test level is as of February 2, Skaters may skate up one level except where indicated. No Test includes skaters who have completed the Basic Skills levels but have not yet passed USFS Pre-Preliminary Freestyle test. Level will be determined by Moves in the Field test passed. Skating up is not permitted. 10 SPIN COMPETITION (may skate up one level) General event parameters: Girls and boys may be combined for this event. Test requirements are the same as for singles freestyle. No music will be used. Spins may be skated in any order. Failed elements may not be retried 1 Spins may be skated in any order. Connecting steps are allowed, but will not be taken into consideration in scoring. 11 Step Sequences: *****NEW EVENT THIS YEAR****** General event parameters: 1. Levels are based upon the skaters highest Moves in the Field test passed. 2. Music of skater s choice, including vocal music, not to exceed the maximum. (less time is fine) 3. Skates perform two different step sequences of their choice; any shape or pattern is permitted; however, skaters must make it clear when their 1 st step sequence ends, and their 2 nd begins. 4. Each of the step sequences must include the required steps and/or turns listed for each level. 5. Each step sequence may, and is encouraged to, include additional steps or turns, as well. 6.
