2 Penetrating Oils Machinist's Workshop MagT recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this. The magazine reports the break out torque values on rusted nuts using the tested penetrating oils. Results are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment. *Penetrating oils...average torque load to loosen* No Oil used pounds WD pounds PB Blaster pounds Liquid Wrench pounds Kano Kroil pounds ATF*-Acetone mix pounds The ATF*-Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50% - 50% by volume automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price! Steve from Godwin-Singer says that the ATF*-Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF* and lacquer thinner in a mix *Automatic Transmission fluid This is taken from Redline Times volume 27, issue 2. 4 Looking through the pictures on the Fetch Toto website of the chill, I came across two cars that looked very familiar! Mr. Tom Wilhite s 65 Mr. Jeff Vann is pretty poplar too! His 68 was also in the pictures from Fetch Toto.

5 It always amazes me as to what people find to collect, and that includes me. Just wanted to show a few of my dealer emblems and of course tell a few stories. What started me on these was one of our Scholfield shows. Now my 64 isn t a Scholfield car but I decided I wanted to put a Scholfield emblem on it anyway. Now this was back in the 80 s when I was still find a few 60 s Pontiacs in the salvages to pick pars from. So was finding Scholfield Bros. Wichita on a few cars then. But the kicker was for 1964 that wasn t going to work. Scholfield wasn t in Wichita in 64, it was in Augusta. So I was looking for a Scholfield Augusta emblem. But I starting saving all the emblems I found on the old salvaged Pontiac s anyway. After about 5 years, I had a nice cigar box full of them but still no Augusta Scholfield. Then one day at the Benton Antique Mall, there it was! It was like Christmas morning for me! The hunt was over...or was it?? It was too late, I was hooked on yet another collection. Found a McKenzie Omaha emblem on a Grand Prix one day, so the hunt was on for a McKenzie. Ended up finding another emblem collector with one and was able to trade him out of it with one of my extras. Oh yes I m not the only one with this disease. One the GTO forum one day, I saw there was someone from out in California that was looking for a McKenzie emblem also. I had mine but it wasn t for sale. So I started looking for another to help this guy out. It took about two years but I finally found another one. I contacted the guy and asked if he was still looking, and of course he was. Didn t think he would find out in California. Anyway, I had $15 in it and that s all I asked for it. But he sent a big tip. He was so happy! You know we all love checking out the cars at the shows and for me, one of the things I look for are the dealer emblems. At the GTOAA Nationals in Portland, out of all the cars there, only one still had its emblem on it. Meadows Portland. Of course I enjoyed talking with the owner and I m sure I asked if he had any other. Nope!! But hey, two years later and bang there is one on ebay. With the coming of ebay, the collection has even doubled in size. So next week one will be in the mail on the way to my house. It is one which has no brand on it. A generic one meaning no brand identification, like Scholfield s, McKenzie and now Meadows also. I enjoy these as they take some research on my part to be sure it is or was a Pontiac Dealership. I have four different models from the Byron Stout dealership. With them being in Wichita, starting in the 40 s. The chief head would have on their first cars, then in the 60 s they moved to the arrow head, then on to the generic one with no brand. Found three on cars, but I had to trade Joe Stout for one of his with the chief head on it. Thanks again Joe! ~~Enjoy, Les
