Newsletter for July 2017 Established 1983 GENERAL MEETING WEDNESDAY, JULY 12 Slideshow featuring Monache Meadows Don Honus, Bob Kieling & Gary Scott This is a remote area of the Kern Plateau reached by a rough and rocky road, High Clearance a must, 4WD recommended. Dispersed camping, fishing and hiking are all available here, Monache Meadows is surrounded by the Golden Trout Wilderness. - USFS There are lots of Golden Trout in the river which is the south fork of the Kern River, the same one that flows into Lake Isabella. They are available in the main meadow and also in the upper campgrounds above the meadow to the north. There is ample camping and access to the water is easy, once you have hogged your way in. You will need four-wheel drive and low range to get here, but the scenery and the fishing are worth the trip. - Sierra Pacific Fly Fishers 6:30-7:00 - FLY TYING / MEET AND GREET 7:00-7:30 - CVFF CLUB BUSINESS / FISHING REPORTS 7:30-9:00 - SPEAKER PRESENTATION & WRAP UP LOCATION: Church of Christ 2525 E Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA ~ free to the public ~ INSIDE THIS ISSUE July Slideshow Presentation... 1 Fishing News... 2 Mike Weigand s Fishing Report 3-4 Member Photos Product Review, Bob Kieling.7 Fish Tales 10 Trout in the Classroom..10 Outings Board of Directors Membership Application SPOTLIGHT Mike Weigand s Fishing Report Idaho/Montana Page 4-5

CA SPORTFISHING LEAGUE -California State Senate Unanimously Passes Fishing License Reform Bill Legislative Update: 12-Month Fishing License Legislation Advances. Before Senate Bill 187 can reach the Governor's desk, it must first pass the Assembly Appropriations Committee and then a floor vote in the State Assembly. Petition - Support a 12-Month Fishing License. Click on this link to sign the petition: stln0kd0jyinmc/ CAL TROUT: Online magazine & videos Caltrout works to ensure there will always be resilient wild fish thriving in healthy waters for a better California (video) If you love to fish, and if you care about wild places and healthy landscapes, then CONVERGENCE is an absolute must-see. Enough is Enough follows three anglers as they tell the story of the McCloud River in Northern California The River a deep ecology river poem SOUTHWEST COUNCIL IFFF: President, Michael Schweit When I came on as Council President, the most often asked question was "What does the Council do for me". In the ensuing time, I hope we have shown you the answers and the endless possibilities. Education, speakers, more conservation projects, better relations with Department of Fish and Wildlife. The list goes on and on. All of this came about because of the cooperation of many, many people. I hope that they, and those of you reading this, remain engaged or if you have not stepped up on any level, to come forward and help the new president, Bill O'Kelly. I have often said that our sport could be so much bigger than it is and I still believe that to this day. We have the ability to introduce fishing to children of all ages through Trout in the Classroom, to involve their parents with Casting For Recovery, Project Healing Waters and conservation, to continue their education through the many local clubs, retailers and guides and keep them involved until they bring their own children into our sport. For that to happen, retailers, manufacturers, guides, clubs and individuals need to work together for the benefit of the sport we love. I leave you as president but because of so many of you, I leave as a better person. Thank you! TROUT UNLIMITED: As every TU member knows, salmon and trout depend on a steady supply of cool or cold water to survive. Although we don t expect to find salmon and trout in waters with bath-like temperatures, this usually-reasonable generalization has the risk of lulling us into an overly conservative vision of salmonid habitat Read more at:

Henry's Lake is in South West Idaho, about 15 miles west Article feature: Mike Weigand Club member Casting instructor Resident of Idaho & California of West Yellowstone, Montana. It, along with Big Springs located about 10 miles south, are the headwaters of the Henry's Fork River, also known as the West Fork of the Snake River. The lake is just a few miles south of the Continental Divide and is fed by several creeks and springs. Like some other productive lakes, Henry's is shallow, no more than 24 feet deep at the outlet. In 1923 farmers in the Snake River Plain built an 8-ft. high dam at the outlet, greatly increasing the size and capacity of the lake. Numerous "pet" flies are tied and, when successful, kept secret. Fly-tier Reporter for waters local and abroad 3 In the late 1800's Henry's Lake was known for holding large trout, which were caught to feed the gold and silver miners in the area. With the dam, there was more water for more fish and Henry's Lake became known as a Trophy Trout Lake. The native trout are West Slope Cutthroat, and can grow to 6-8 pounds. They are "trapped" for eggs and milt and grown in hatcheries to be stocked back in the lake. article continued on page 5.

Henry s Lake Fishing report continued There is also natural spawning in the tributaries; several of which have been rehabilitated by the State and local groups, such as the Henry's Lake Foundation. Hybrid Rainbows are stalked and they grow quickly in the fertile water; every year fish weighing 12 to 15 pounds are taken. The third type of trout is Brook Trout. And, because of the amount of food in the water, they can grow to over 20" and 6 lbs. That is a Big Brookie! Winter ice can be almost 2 feet thick, but the springs continue to feed fresh water into the lake and there is not much winter kill. Fishing opens on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and is looked forward to by many local and out-of-state anglers. If "ice out" is close to opening day fishing can be spectacular. The Cutthroats crowd every tributary and there will be schools of hundreds of fish at the mouths. Unfortunately, the last few years have been warmer than normal and ice-out has occurred 4-6 weeks before fishing starts. That means the fish are scattered in the deeper parts of the lake and natural food is plentiful. While there are large number of "conventional gear" fishermen at the opening, the majority of anglers through the year are fly fishers. Bill Schiess has been fishing and writing about Henry's Lake for years and his book can be very helpful for someone new to the area. Many fishermen spend the summer in homes or RV's and fish the lake daily. Numerous "pet" flies are tied and, when successful, kept secret. Various styles of wooly buggers and leech patterns are used, along with fresh water scud patterns. Bead Head Pheasant Tail Nymphs, size 16, can be very productive when stripped behind a larger nymph or streamer. There is little dry fly fishing on Henry's Lake, but when Callibaetis are hatching some fish can be caught with a Parachute Adams or "stuck-in-the-shuck" pattern. Other times, when midges are emerging, Zebra Midge Nymphs fished below an indicator can be the ticket. Just as any water, lake or river, the fishing can be wonderful, but catching can be tough. Occasionally you can get tired of catching 20" + trout, but that is not the rule. Especially for newcomers. Many "ol' timers" fish the lake daily and learn what works when. And, you have to be in the right spot; such as over one of the springs or an old creek channel. Anchor away from and cast to weed beds to try for the fish hiding there. Good Luck and have fun! ~ Mike Weigand 5

JULY FLYFISHING PROBLEM: TIPPET BIRDSNEST SOLUTION : LOON RIGGING FOAM How many times have you been all rigged up and then put your leader and flies in the trees or bushes???????? You then (after necessary cussing) start to cut off the leader and the 2 or 3 flies that are a TANGLED MESS. You now take 30 minutes putting on new tippet, new flies, new lead, etc...all the time continuing to cuss. The solution is the LOON rigging foam disks. The night before or in the morning you can rig three setups and wind them on the foam. They are the size of tippet spools and will fit on you tippet spool system. When needed, you unravel and install with loop too loop or attach to your ring system. Within 5 minutes you are ready to proceed to your next BIRDSNEST!!!!!!!!!!!!! PRODUCT REVIEW COST: Under $7.00 on ebay TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM TU's mission is to conserve, protect and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.
