1 JUNE SPEAKER FRANK SELBY Fishing Silver Salmon In Alaska Our speaker for the June meeting is Frank Selby. Frank began Fly Fishing as a young boy. He was introduced to the sport by his uncle, a syndicated newspaper sportswriter, living in the Midwest. Fishing the streams were, and are, his first love, especially those in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. He moved to Huntington Beach, California, in 1956 where he lives with his wife, Bev, who also enjoys Fly Fishing and communing with nature. With his proximity to the ocean, Frank soon began experimenting with various fly s and salt water fishing techniques. Thus began his love for saltwater fly fishing. Not only could he fish close to home, but he could do it all year round. Frank then branched out to fishing bays, estuaries, or anywhere he thought the fishing might be good.. He Volume 25 Issue 6 June 2008 has fished fresh and saltwater throughout most of the world, and has enjoyed every moment. He could be fishing for Silvers, Humpys, Grayling, Rainbows, or Pike, on some un-dammed water on the Alagnak River, in the heart of Bristol Bay s Watershed, Alaska -- his favorite places are right here in the USA. Frank is the owner of His & Hers Fly Fishing shop in Costa Mesa, California, and is a licensed guide & FFF certified instructor-caster. You may have seen him in any number of California Fishing Journals or even more fun, the Blind Date TV Show! One reporter quoted Frank as saying that he expected his clients to have at lease 30 hook-up s on every outing. When Frank is not in his store, we can usually find him along some stream, in the surf, or guiding his clients to an off-shore location for an exciting day of saltwater fly fishing. On special days we might even find him fishing by him self. You won t want to miss this months meeting, and come early to watch Frank tie some awesome saltwater flies, share conversation about places to fish, and which flies to use. Ron Bishop Vice President, Deep Creek Fly Fishers
2 PRESIDENT S CORNER JUNE MESSAGE Remember, we need to maintain our conservation efforts to improve the habitat of our streams and lakes so that all can continue to enjoy these waters. I hope that every member does what he or she can when on the water, even if it is not a club sponsored event. Remind fellow fishers that keeping the the environment fish friendly should be a goal for everyone. Hope to seen you on the water. Bob Habereder The year is fast slipping away. It is already June, and the schools have closed for the summer recess. Fishermen are on the streams and on the lakes, many with their families. Sometimes, special trips are arranged for this time of year. Last year I was privileged to join seven other Deep Creek members for a trip down the Green River in Utah. We had three days of fishing and two nights of camping along the river. Many fish were caught and many cigars and a few beers were consumed. It was a great time. This year is a little different. With gas prices approaching $5.00 a gallon, some of our long range trips are getting put on hold. This does not mean we must refrain from exercising fish. We may want to take a slightly different approach to our summer fishing. If we look to more local waters, such as Big Bear Lake, Skinner Lake, Perris Lake, Silverwood Lake, as well as some of the local streams, we can still get in a fair amount of fishing this summer without having to get a second mortgage on the house. This brings me to our speaker for this month, Frank Selby. Frank will be discussing fishing for Silver Salmon in Alaska at our June meeting. However, he is equally well known for float tube trips in Newport Bay as well as surf fishing in local waters, all done with the fly rod. Also, last month s speaker, Richard Bean provided a lot of information on quality fishing in Southern California. So, while some of us may be curtailing some of our longer trips for this summer, it does not mean we have to put up our fly rods for the summer. Just some food for thought. Page 2 Volunteers For Bratsworth Sale At BPS I wish to thank all the Deep Creek Volinteers for there support through the first half of the year. Your support has been without question, the greatest ever. Not only to me but to all of the Deep Creek Flyfishers club. The moneys raised here will support all the good things that our club stands for. This being our last Brats sale until 2009 I hope that everyone involved will take a little pride in what you have done. Without you this could not of happened. Your efforts, money and time spent away from your family are the greatest gifts you have given to me and the club. I know I speak for many when I say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting on June 25. Ron Bishop VP Deep Creek Fly Fishers

5 Helpful Hints From Trevor Walker/Dean Rickerd Dean Rickerd is one of those anglers who typically catch more fish than most, including me. One of the secrets of his success is his ability to switch methods very rapidly, so this summer Al Hobson and I persuaded him to reveal how he rigged up to facilitate these rapid changes. Having learned the method, I suggested to him that it might be worth writing it up for the club. The following is Dean s method as told verbally to me. Trevor Walker For rapid changes, I use a #6 rod around 9ft long with a #6 orange floating line for most of my stream fishing. The #6 outfit is a compromise that allows both small dry flies and large streamers or wooly buggers to be cast. A 12-inch section of stiff line, inch diameter, is attached to the line by means of a nail or needle knot. This is termed the link. Note a thicker section is used for tournament casting but for fishing it is important for the knots to run smoothly through the guides. The 12inch section terminates in a small perfection loop. (According to Orvis, the perfection and double surgeon loops are of equal strength but I prefer the perfection loop because it is less bulky and runs smoothly through the guides when reeling in a fish). Both the nail/needle knot and perfection knot are coated with a bead of 5- minute epoxy and the link is rotated backward and forward using the thumb and forefinger until the epoxy is set. This produces a symmetric bead that runs smoothly through the guides. For dry fly fishing a knotless leader tapering to 4x, 5x or 6x (size depends on where you are fishing) is attached to the link using a loop to loop connection. (Note for hoppers and salmon flies a stouter tippet would be required.) The brand of leader is not too critical, but choose a leader with a butt not exceeding inches. A stouter butt will lead to hinging of the link which in turn leads to poor leader turn-over. Most knotless leaders come with pre-tied loops. However, the loop knot needs coating with epoxy to ensure that it runs smoothly through the guides. As the leader s tippet shortens with use, add a new tippet by means of a double surgeon knot or a blood knot. For deep nymph fishing, I use a leader tapered to 3X and a fairly large dry fly which serves as an indicator. A lighter tippet is attached to the eye of the dry fly and a conventional nymph is tied to the tippet. A shot is Page 5 added about 16 inches above the nymph. Ideally, the tippet should be as light as possible to aid rapid sinking but stout enough to hold any fish hooked. Thus, tippet diameter depends on conditions. For deep water the dry fly is omitted and the orange fly line serves as an indicator. To fish a soft hackle wet fly I use a standard dry fly leader with a suitable small dry fly attached. About 4ft of extra tippet is than tied to the eye of the dry fly and an un-weighted wet fly is tied on the end of the tippet. This rig is cast upstream and fished drag free, then across the stream and allowed to swing until it hangs directly down stream. A slow twitched retrieve often produced strikes to either or both flies. If egg-laying caddis are on the water the rod can be lifted and lowered and this causes the dry fly to dance up and down like an egg-laying caddis. The dry fly can be made to dance because the wet fly acts as an anchor. Fish are caught on both-the dry fly and the wet fly. Sometimes double hookups occur. To fish wooly buggers, streamers etc. the tapered leader is removed and 5 to 6 feet of level 3x, 2x or 1x tippet connected to the link via a loop to loop connection. The length of the level tippet depends on water depth and for deep rivers more than 6 feet would be required. Enough weight is placed about 16 inches above the wooly bugger etc. to get the lure down quickly. The lure can be cast upstream much like a conventional nymph. It can also be cast across stream, allowed to swing and then be retrieved like a streamer. The fly is un-weighted which will produce a more realistic fly action. On a typical day in the Yellowstone area I will use one method for minutes and than change if the method is not productive. Consequently, over a 3-hour period all four methods may be used. An exception to the 45 minute rule occurs during a salmon fly hatch. I will fish a dry salmon fly over a known good lie and if no action, immediately switch to a wooly bugger. Dean Rickerd
6 Q & A - Fiction & Facts - Jokes & Lies Question of the month: When you re working your way downstream and come across someone working upstream what should you do? Answer: The fisherman working downstream yields to the angler working upstream. This is an old rule dating back to the time of Hewitt and Gordon. Bonus question: Who are HEWITT and GORDON? Answer: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Edward R. Hewitt and Theodore Gordon popularized the sport of fly fishing on the upstate New York river Neversink, and today the river is hailed as the birthplace of American fly fishing. F & F of the month: Fish vary in their capability to distinguish color, but most have some ability. Red is the color to which fish are most sensitive but it is visible only at close distances. Blue and purple are most visible in deep water. Joke of the month: Fishermen are born honest, but they get over it! If you like this column please support it:: Have a question (or answer) about fly fishing, do you know something that the rest of us need to know? Heard a good one lately? Wally Hayes@TatankaUSA@hotmail.com Golden Trout Conservation Projects There are currently two projects in Monache Meadows on the calendar for this year looking for volunteers. They are June and October 4-5. This is a beautiful area just south of the Golden Trout Wilderness, with good fishing and a chance to get away. For more information visit Steve Kopp Conservation Chairman Trout In The Classroom News The Deep Creek Fly Fishers successfully completed the April to June 2008 Release Schedule during the second week in June. Twenty-four schools brought in a reported 1268 children to participate in the Trout In The Classroom Release Program, at the Applewhite Picnic Area in Lytle Creek. Eighteen club members participated in the twenty-four one-day events, with one particular member participating in 20 of the release programs. Each of the twenty four programs needs at least four club members to participate in order to host all of the normally planned activities. The Deep Creek Fly Fishers Board of Directors is extremely thankful to all who participated. GREAT JOB!!! Christmas Banquet 2008 is Moving To Pinnacle Peak s Steak House Deep Creek Fly Fishers Member and guests. This is to let everyone who has not been able to come to our monthly meetings that the DCFF Club has decided that this coming Banquet Dinner would be better if we had a larger location to hold the dinner. Pinnacle Peak s Steak House can give us enough room to hold our silent auction and seat over 300 people in comfort. We will be in touch with everyone in the near future about the menu and cost of tickets, so please come to the June 25th meeting, or call me for any questions. Thank you, Ron Bishop VP Deep Creek Fly Fishers Page 6
