A couple of weeks ago we fished San Luis Forebay, nine of us. We were everywhere, like ants on an apple pie. Everyone was landing fish, not at the same time or in great numbers. But, we had a great time. Greg S., Loren and I had our boats out. It was much a needed adventure. I drove Jay around to some of my favorite spots and picked up a few schoolies in the process. Jay even picked up a fat one trolling while we were moving from spot to spot. Greg told me that Scott hook onto something so big that a wake was created as Scott was being towed across the water by the islands, but the weeds and a smart fish got the better of the fight with Scott being left with an empty tippet and no end to the story. Also, we have Pyramid Lake going. Not much of a report to give yet as it is day one and everyone is tight lipped about what is going on except all the new rules and the cost! Please check all the new regulation s before you get all the way out there! A quick FYI: on November 7 th Monterey Bay Salmon & Trout Project will be having its 38th. annual Albacore feed in Castroville. It s at 6pm. You can buy tickets at the door, great fun and raffle prizes for all! We had a rod build class during the last few weeks and we produced three nice new fly rods by, Rich Wilson, Greg Smith and me. Thanks to Jay for helping out and letting us use the meeting room at the ranch. It is now and time to chase some chrome. I have heard reports of salmon in the rivers. With that being said, there should be some nice steelhead right behind them feasting away. So let s get ready for our yearly trip to the north starting with egg patterns. With the rain we received a few nights ago and talking to some northern friends their prediction is the fish are coming. I have visions of chrome steelhead in my head for the coming year. And a chance to try out the new Sage 6wt that I built! Fly tying Sheep Creek Special Recipe for the Sheep Creek Special -Hook: Tiemco 2457 scud hook #10. -Thread: Black 0/6 thread. -Butt: Brown dry fly hackle, over sized. -Body: Chenille body in olive or brown. -Wing: Wood duck feather for the wing, Note: Some fly tyers substitute Jay Fair s Short shuck or short crystal chenille for the body material The Sheep Creek Special is an old school stillwater fly created by George Biggs of Jerome, Idaho. George developed this fly in the sixties for Sheep Creek Reservoir on the Nevada - Idaho border. This man was way ahead of his time as he learned and mastered the secrets of fishing stillwater with a fly rod and flies. It is sometimes referred to as a Damsel imitation though the resemblance is not clear. A quick fish report From the Prez.. Sacramento River Salmon fishing is starting to pick up, there are Salmon from Redding to the Delta of the Sacramento River. The Wild Rainbow Trout fishing has been great the past month. Per fish sniffer Delta-The fall striper run is strengthening in the West Delta and trollers are rounding up limits of bass. Sturgeon are present too, but few anglers are targeting them. Alaska-A monster 466-pound Alaska halibut was "team fought", and thus not IGFA- legal, but it exceeded the current IGFA mark of 459 pounds. Treasure Greg Smith reports that we have $ in the coffers. Tracy and the boys went over to Central Coast Fly fishing and bought up a bunch of raffle stuff. Please note that Geoff has closed the shop. (We ll miss you Geoff and best wishes from all of us at the club) The members talked about ideas for the newsletter and web site. The board voted to propose changes in the annual club dues as follows: A modest raise in individual dues from $35 to $40, with a Family Membership at $50 and Junior members (under the age of 16) free. New members who join after June 30th would pay $20 for the remainder of the year. These proposed changes will be brought to the membership for a vote. It was notes that the club is looking for Board member for the new year. In particular we need someone for the position of Vice President and Secretary. Up coming programs were discussed. Jay Murakoshi will be presenting this month. The Board also reviewed the outing schedule for the remainder of the year which has lots of potential but needs to be firmed up. It was noted that we need Fishmasters ed.

Board meeting Landing Zone Restaurant All members welcome Rod Sanchez November 11th Monthly Meeting Landing Zone Restaurant Doug Ouellette Fishing Pyramid Rod Sanchez September Outing Report San Luis (O Neill Forebay) Septembers outing to the forebay was without a doubt one of the most successful striper outing that our club has ever had. I remember the outing a few years back when everyone took turns holding up the only fish that was caught for pictures. The funny thing was that we almost called it off due to the weather conditions. The thermometer was predicted to be in triple digits. Most everybody arrived sometime on Friday. Loren and Rod brought their boats and fished with the accompaniment of Roger Caton and Jay Jefferson. respectively. Frank Cunha, Sutter Creek Tim, Rick and Scott all bivouacked at the campground just southeast of the islands and those guys all fished the island s area from their pontoon boats. On Friday, everybody seemed to be catching fish, even the sissies in Rod s boat, although Jay apparently had a little trouble getting the stink off his fly rod.. Friday night the wind came up and howled, but just like magic, it died off almost as soon as the boys hit the water on Saturday morning. We seemed to catch fish every time we went out. Most of the fish were small schoolies, maybe inches. Rick claimed to have landed one that was 26 and both he and Scott lost big fish. Frank found a honey hole on Friday evening and pulled out a dozen fish without moving more then 20 yards. I didn t get a count from the guys in the boats, but from what I saw, it appeared that well over 100 fish were caught for the outing. Saturday evening found everyone excepted Greg (who must have drowned) lined up for Tri Tip and all the fix ns, By Sunday afternoon, folks were pulling out and heading home.. Good fishing, good friends, good food..great outing! Thanks to all who attended Rick (Fishmaster) A Little Something About Damsels Zygoptera, Damselflies prefer lakes and ponds but will also be found in slow moving streams. The nymphs hatch from eggs laid on subsurface plant material. They move through the water at a slow pace by undulating it's entire body. Below the abdomen are three gills which also help create movement. Usually the nymph will hang within the water column so that a Chuck and Sit Presentation will generally be more successful than retrieves. The colors of the nymph will vary from Green to Olive to Brownish hues depending upon the time of year. The adult rests with it's wings folded over it's body. Female damsels lay their eggs by crawling down plant material into the subsurface environment. She carries a volume of air trapped by her body to respire and will be carried by the air bubble to the surface after laying the eggs. Trout will key in on this since many adults get trapped within the surface film. There are particularly Good Damsel hatches at Davis Lake and Frenchman Reservoir.

4 More Fishing Reports. Some reports are coming in from Pyramid now that it is open for the season. A number of fish in the pound range, but mostly from boats in deeper water at least initially Striper action at San Luis forebay appears to be continuing Small fish but lot s of them Tim and Rick, just back from Heenan Lake and Indian Creek Reservoir, report lots of fisherman and not very many fish being caught. They say that the weather was great, but Heenan had big algae bloom.. Remember Lake Almanor for late in June If you re already starting to think about next year s trout season, be sure to put this one on the calendar for This is the home of the legendary late evening hatching Hexagenia mayfly hatch. Not to mention some of the very best Small Mouth bass fishing in the state. For camping, be sure to check out PG& E s Rocky Point Camp Ground. You ll be hard pressed to find a prettier spot or more exciting fishing.
