1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. Inside this issue: President s Letter Fly Tying Roundtable Prospects Guide s Choice Hares Ear Members Ship Application Upcoming Events: June 14, Fly Tying Roundtable 1100 Valley Road, 6:30 June 17, Fishout, Frenchman Lake, 8:00 A. M. for coffee June 21, General Membership Meeting, Sam Sedillo, with TU will be our speaker July 6, BOD meeting 6:00, 3030 Vista Blvd. Ste 100 November 2016 President s Letter President s Letter It seems that spring is here, finally, and summer not too far behind. I hope everyone is doing well. I haven't heard, but I hope the fishout at South Fork went well. We'll find out at the meeting on the 21st. A neighbor and I were talking about Squaw Reservoir, outside Gerlach. Water is low, but someone is clearing out the shoreline vegetation and burning it, so access will be easier, and the water level is rising. By the neighbor's report, nice trout are being caught at the dam end of the lake. We will have one more Fly Tying Round Table, on the 14th of June, before we take a rest for the summer. Wes Ong will be the guest tier. We will resume the Round Table in October. The general meeting will be the 21st of June. Hopefully all you hunters were luckier than I was on the tag draw this year. It looks like Gordon Q and I will be hunting Jackalope this year. I wouldn't object if someone were to donate a rib or two to my freezer (haha!!). And hey, if you want to get to know a fellow club member better, if you don't want to go fishing alone, or if you want to share a nice place to fish (if it's not your "secret" honey hole), CALL, get a phone number at a meeting, and make it happen! There's nothing like sharing a great fishing experience with a friend. Good fishing! Stu C. June 2017

2 Page 2 TRF FLY TYING ROUNDTABLE When: Wednesday, June 14 th at 6:30pm Where: NDOW Bldg Valley Rd. The Angler s Line Our guest tier for this month will be Wes Ong. Wes is a long time club member in addition to being a former club president, great fly tier and great all around fly fisherman. Wes is involved with a number of our functions throughout the year promoting our club. He also instructs monthly fly tying classes at Cabela s. Below are the fly patterns Wes will be tying for us and a list of the materials he will be using. I know from my own personal experience that these flies will put big fish in your net. 3 Page 3 Angler s Line June 21, Speaker "Sam Sedillo works for Trout Unlimited as the Sierra Cascades Field Coordinator out of the Truckee TU (TRTU) office. He works on restoration projects, volunteer operations, fish sampling, and outreach. Specifically, Sam will be presenting on how TU is leading projects to conserve, protect, and restore trout and salmon fisheries throughout Nevada and California. TU is excited to be working on projects that both directly benefit the special fish that exist in these states and also provide increased opportunities for anglers to catch these fish. Sam will also be talking about a trout tracking study that he is leading on the Little Truckee River through November this year. 25 rainbow trout and brown trout are being monitored to better understand the way trout move and utilize habitat in this special tail water. Sam moved to Truckee from Colorado one and a half years ago, where he completed his degree in Natural Resources Management and Fishery Biology from Colorado State University. He s an avid fly fisherman and spent the majority of his angling career there fishing for trout with tiny flies in tail waters. This, to nobody s surprise, prepared him for spending most of his days on the water in California fishing for trout in tail waters with tiny flies." June17, Fishout Our June fish-out is scheduled for Frenchman Reservoir on Saturday, June 17th. We will meet at the Frenchman Boat Ramp and Campground on the south east side of the lake (turn right and go over the dam). Stu will be in the parking lot at 8 AM with coffee and donuts and Deb and I will be cooking hamburgers, hot dogs and my world famous chili along with drinks. Bring a chair. Lunch served at 1 PM in the back corner of the parking lot. The lake is full and the fish are pretty spread out, but there are some nice leftovers from previous years (16+ inches). They were also suppose to stock in May. One angler reported good luck with pheasant tails. I have had luck with Sheep Creek's and Denny Rickards (sp?) Stillwater nymphs. Mike O'Brien reported catching a few with small black leeches. In years past copper John's of various colors under an indicator has worked well fishing to the east of the boat ramp. You just never know. Hope to see some of you there. Mark Warren VP PS You have to pay a fee to fish Frenchman. the fee is $7/day (I think) or $35/year. If you are a senior and have a Golden Age Card (Federal) the annual fee is $ the pass is good for both Frenchman and Davis. If you are 62 years of age older, you can purchase a Golden Age Card at the Forest Service in Sparks (off McCarran) for $10. It is good for a lifetime. Also, they plan on raising it to $85 in August. It's a great deal as you get in all the National Parks for free, a lot of them presently charge a $35 entrance fee.

4 Page 4 The Anger s Line (Betsy and the Rubies) I feel bad about leaking a favorite fishing spot to other than my very best friends. But now that we are more involved in club events, we all have to share. And, we need a definite presence there at Southfork Reservoir. Why, because it's the best rainbow and bass fishing in NEVADA right now. It reminds me of the old days at Davis Lake. Here's Murph with a nice rainbow. There's also another member there in the background Yes, it was an epic weekend. Everyone caught fish. There were rainbow trout, wipers, and small mouths. Here is a sweet Wiper!! It was also a beautiful landscape, the Rubies were snow capped, it was fairly warm and the water was in the low 60s. It was true swimming weather. And u ask who was there.? Why only the best: Doug and Jenny O, Jerry Harding, Terrell, Murph, Betsy, Deb, Tina and Tom Smith. So now that u all are on my friends list, let's get out there! Deb Robinson

5 Page 5 JUNE 2017 PROSPECTS Truckee River: The river has been dropping constantly each time I check it. A couple of hundred cfs every couple of days. Little consolation since it is still over 3000 cfs at this writing. If you must fish the river, look for the soft water. Lower flows will be on the California side. Little Truckee: Good news here the water has dropped to 200 cfs! Hopefully this was not just for the Memorial Day weekend. It may drop even further on the 15 th of June which is the end of the spawn at Pyramid Lake. Knot Creek Reservoir: year. Opens the 10 th of this month and water condition should be good this Milton Res. I don t think that this will be accessible until the end of June or even July! But get in as soon as you can because when the work gets out that you can access the fish will get lots of pressure and get educated fast. Jay Clark did a good explanation on the lake. Frenchman: So, we have the same number of fish with four times the water to find them in. Some have been doing good, other are having a tough time. It helps to be able to cover a lot of water. Lake Davis: I have heard that some of the trollers have done well but have heard nothing about the fly fishing at the lake this year. The damsel hatch should start soon but with the highwater conditions it may be up to 3 weeks late. Lake Almanor: Hex hatch here generally starts the 20 th of June and should start on time. My suggestion is to stay on the nymphs and when the hatch hit s the surface just go to a floating line with a nymph. Lots of smallies are in the mix. Wilson Sink: This lake has seen good water conditions for over three years, so there should be lots of decent fish here. It gets very little pressure, but if you lived in Elko would you drive and hour to fish here when South Fork is only 15 minutes from town? Duck Valley Indian Reservation: Great fishing conditions here because the tribe here used the water in Wild Horse to keep these lakes full during the drought. Good reports on all three lakes. South Fork Res. Fish out here was just before the lake turned over. Should fish well now. Look for the damsel hatch to start soon. Good sight fishing up by the inflow of the South Fork of the Humboldt. Sleepers: Carp at Rosewood Lakes. Has anyone been down to the East Walker? 6 Page 6 GUIDE S CHOICE HARE S EAR The Anger s Line This Hare s Ear variant pattern comes from the Greater Yellowstone Flyfishers up in Bozeman, Montana. The soft hackle collar that offers more movement in the water, the gold bead, flashabou wing case, gold rib and the hot spot collar all adds up to produce a more attractive fly to the fish. Try drifting them, swinging them or stripping them it s an amazing little fly. The Guide s Choice Hare s Ear is a killer pattern that belongs in everyone s fly box. HOOK: Mustad 9671 or TMC 5262, Size 12 THREAD: UTC Fire Orange, 70 Denier BEAD: Brass Gold, 7/64 WEIGHT: Non lead wire,.015 TAIL: Natural hare s mask guard hairs RIB: UTC French Tinsel, Oval gold, Medium BODY: Natural hare s mask THORAX: Peacock herl WING CASE: Flashabou, Pearl COLLAR: Partridge, Soft hackle HOT SPOT: UTC Fire Orange thread 1. Place bead on hook up to eye and wrap non lead wire, 6 to 8 turns, along hook shank behind bead. 2. Attach thread at back of wire and build a thread dam to secure then wrap a thread base forward to the bead then back to the bend of the hook. 3. Prepare a small clump of hair from the center of the hare s mask and attach to the hook shank with the tips extending approximately a half hook shank length beyond hook bend. 4. Secure gold tinsel along near side of hook shank. 5. Dub a tapered body forward to the 2/3 point of the hook shank. 6. Spiral wrap gold tinsel forward with 4 to 5 turns to front of the body. (Secure and remove excess) 7. Attach flashabou near front of body. 8. Attach 3 or 4 peacock herls near the front of the body and wrap forward to the bead. (Secure and remove excess) 9. Pull flashabou forward over thorax and secure behind the bead. (Remove excess) 10. Prepare partridge hackle and attach in back of bead with the concave side toward the rear of the fly. 11. Wrap the hackle 1 to 2 turns just behind the bead. (Secure and remove excess) 12. Build a prominent thread collar behind bead and whip finish. (Remove excess) I also tie this pattern in olive with a bright white thread collar and had good success in still water applications. Mike O Brien
