1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. April 2016 The Club members and Board of Directors put together one of the best banquets we have ever had. Our guest speaker Joe Warren s presentation was spot on. Joe spoke about Washington s cutthroat fishery at Omak Lake along with the rainbows in the Colombia River. The food was very good and the audio visual system was state of the art. I would like to give thanks to all of the members and local businesses who contributed to the raffle. The TRF recognized the following: Mid Lipera Award - Mark Warren, Mike Sevon Cal Bird Cup - Wes Ong, Dave Bryeans President s Award - Tom Smith Appreciation Award - Mike O Brien The Truckee River is flowing strongly now and will be in great shape throughout the year. We have a vibert box project coming up soon. As usual we will need manpower and volunteers to make it successful. Mark Warren will have more on this soon. (This project was completed on April 8 th ) We were given little warning about the eggs becoming available and had no time to ask for help. Article and info about this in the May newsletter. 2 Page 2 The Angler s Line Fly Tiers Roundtable By Mike Hoffman Our March meeting was a real good one! Wes Ong did a super job tying a few of his hot flies. We had a great turnout and two of our members won boxes full of some real nice bugs during the Roundtable Raffle. The April meeting will be on Wednesday 4/13/16, 6:30 pm at the NDOW meeting room. Our guest tier will be Richard Dickerson. Richard is a past club President, fly tying instructor, fly fishing author and a very experienced fly fisherman. His book on fly fishing Northern Nevada is a must read! He will be tying three of his favorites; the Rhyco Soft Hackle, Bouyant Hare s Ear Nymph and the Humpy aka Goofus Bug. Check your or the website for the recipes and more info on the meetings. We look forward to seeing you at the Roundtable and don t forget to bring a few of your flies for the Roundtable Raffle. The Annual Pyramid Lake (Terry Barron) Fishout will be on Sunday, April 17 th. You guessed it, it will be at Pyramid Lake and we will have lunch at Crosby s. There will be a big fish contest, hope there are some big fish caught this year, Tom Smith won it last year with a 20 fish, (thought this was supposed to be big fish contest). We will meet at the North nets, 7:30 A.M., for coffee and donuts and to sign up for the big fish contest, we will get together at Crosby s for lunch at 1:00, there will be a raffle as well. AS usual with the big fish contest, these fish are to be caught on flies and released back into the lake, if you catch and keep a 25 lb. fish that will be your prize. Entries have to be witnessed by another person and a picture is always nice. A rod will be awarded to the winner. The contest will closed at 4:00, this will give Mark a chance to get home and take a nap. Check out will also be at the North Nets. The rod to be awarded is a Cab Atoll 8 weight, 9 foot, valued at $300. Lunch is $10 and the contest is $5. Don t forget to renew your membership, you have to be a current member to participate in the fishing contest and attend the Pyramid Fishout and lunch. April 20, General Membership Meeting. This meeting will feature Joe Kopp, he works for Berkley and is an expert on lines. Joe will be talking about the differences in line, fluorocarbon as to monofilament.he will demonstrate knots and can magnify knots and display them on a screen so we can see the imperfections. Joe will bring a knot and line testing machine. This in a great opportunity to see how your knots perform and if there is a better knot or line that you should be using.

4 Page 4 The Angler s Line April 2016 Prospects by Wes Ong Pyramid Lake: Pilots are not around the Nets. Last year April was slow at the lake with not many big number days or big fish. I ve written this the last two years and I suspect that this will be true this year also, with a good day about every 4 th day. Fish are spread out over the entire lake so if you want to avoid the crowds at the nets you can still catch a few fish elsewhere. Water at the fishway should be on by now. Fish-out, barbeque, and contest on the 17 th. Truckee River: With a somewhat normal run off season the water is high but fishable and the stones are coming off now. I suspect the Green Drake hatch to happen at the normal time of late May. IMHO there are not many fish left in the Truckee River, I m not as optimistic as NDOW, and I don t count the recent plants. Little Truckee: With continuing low water in Stampede Reservoir I look for good flows for the rest of the spring. Use small flies and fine tippets East Walker River: Now that the California side is open all year you can make a trip down there and have a lot of river to fish. Normally March is a good stone fly time and may carry over into April. Look for consistent flows for at least 4 days before making the trek down there. Hinkson Slough: With the oncoming of spring the Slough should only get better based on the opener that we had. Smaller midges and finer tippet may be necessary as the season advances. Frenchman and Davis Lake: I have heard almost nothing on either lake. Fish at Frenchman are in the spawn mode and will be for the next couple of weeks. The funk that the fish go through when they finish spawning, or while trying to spawn, should end about the beginning of May. Frenchman camp ground is open but I am not sure about the boat launch. Eastern Nevada: Illapah has been ice free since the middle of March. Ruby Marsh has been tough this spring because of ice. South Fork is fishing well when there is a good wind. Fish are not up in the Humboldt trying to spawn. Wilson should be hot this year, again! Sleepers: Almanor near the Hamilton Branch, Stripers in the Delta, they didn t come in last fall so there ought to be a good healthy run this spring. Squaw Creek reservoir. 5 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 5 Fly Craft Fullback This flashback pattern is a variation of the popular Fullback nymph and is an excellent stillwater searching pattern. You can fish this pattern several ways to imitate scuds, damsel nymphs, caddis larvae, dragonfly nymphs and water beetle larvae. My favorite method is under a floating line with a 10 or 12 foot leader using a slow hand retrieve and incorporating a twitch every now and then. Hook: Nymph 2XL long, #8 - #12 Thread: Olive 8/0 Tail: Pheasant tail, Natural Body: Arizona Synthetic Peacock dubbing Rib: Copper wire, Brassie Shellback: Pheasant tail, Natural Wing case: Pheasant tail with Mirage opal mylar Thorax: Arizona Synthetic Peacock dubbing Legs: Partridge, Natural 1. Attach thread and form a thread base while tying in copper wire. 2. Create and load dubbing loop near hook bend and wind dubbing noodle forward to the ¾ point on the hook. Tie off and trim. 3. Place Pheasant tail, approximately 12 fibers, over the body forming the shellback and the tips forming the tail, approximately ½ length of hook shank. Tie in at the thorax area. (Do not trim excess; this will be the wing case material). 4. Wind rib forward securing the tail and shellback. Tie off in front of wing case material. 5. Tie in mylar on top of wing case material pull both back slightly over the body, secure. 6. Create and load dubbing loop to form thorax. 7. Tie in Partridge feather near hook eye and wind forward 2 3 turns secure and trim. 8. Pull wing case material over thorax secure and trim excess. 9. Form a neat head. (Reinforce wing case material by applying UV resin) Mike O Brien
