1 Chairman s Note Rossett and Gresford Flyfishers Club Newsletter Autumn 2017 Dear Members, May I introduce you to our 4th electronic newsletter. As previously mentioned, we have requested details of all members - although most members have already provided us with their address and we are aware that some members, for personal reasons, prefer not to supply their address some have still not notified the club. We have, therefore, assumed that these people do not wish to receive the clubs newsletter. If your circumstances change and we are made aware we will send future Newsletters through the system you wish. The latest newsletter will be published on the clubs website under Articles. This information will be sent out to all members with the notification for the AGM. As you may be aware Mave, my wife, is now Helping on the Committee, as part of that work on the Web Site in Maps you will find a series of parking guides for all the river. A second guide to fishing our river is now to be found in Articles. This is a working document and will change as the river alters. For those who have not tried all areas, it will give a guide via pictures and a few words that you may find helpful. Many thanks for this project and I hope it is of use to all members, the feedback so far has been very positive. Two more members joined our Committee at the July meeting, they are Dave Meadows and Gary Shawcross. In August Fly Tying and Fly Fishing published an article on our River. High praise was singled out for Steve (Sunley), our Web Master, as it has been one of the best and up to date site they have seen, with images changing most weeks. This season I have had the pleasure of helping new members find their River Feet. This is a free service (time permitting) and is open to all. There will be several people doing this and it is hoped that it will enhance members enjoyment of our river. As usual I have not fished as much as I wanted to, but it has been a very good season for me. I would like to say that I took lots of fish on dry fly, but sadly that was not the case, most fish were caught on PTN s. New Membership Secretary After several years in the post Graham (Apprentice) Alexander has made the decision to retire. A huge debt of thanks goes to him for all the hard work he has put in as the first contact with potential new members. He always made time to send details of what to use / how to fish the river, along with many telephone conversations to help new members. My personal thanks to Graham for all the challenges he set for me and the company when on the river, long may it continue.

This was held in June and those who attended seemed to have a good day, despite the hot weather. For any future events, a suggestion that due to the advanced age and working status, a midweek may be better? There could even be another event this year? Please drop me a line or call and I will endeavour to organise. Eddie (e.j.wilkinson@hotmail.co.uk) Sunday Working Party This is the usual plea for help - it is your river and your fishing and this vital work makes it more accessible and, therefore, better for fishing. Without this work members will struggle to fish! There is no need to commit to every Sunday, just pop along when you can. Details of where we will meet is on the website. Please check before you come, as the few who do this work on a regular basis are now struggling, so if we know that we are down to one or two we will cancel. Alternatively, drop me a line to say you can attend. If nothing else it helps you to understand the river more (and find that unknown fishing hole). Not all work is in the river and there is always time for tea (and biscuits)! Fishing Reports For the 2016 season the final total, from those who submitted returns, came in at: Browns 166 Grayling Giving a grand total of 317 recorded fish for the year (this was for just 7 members) Please forward any reports via the club web site or to Eddie Wilkinson at: - e.j.wilkinson@hotmail.co.uk

3 This season I feel I have done better and had better fish, but that is just my take on the season. My results are: browns 142 Grayling 1 sea trout 1 parr 1 perch 253 fish 16+ browns over 1lb 27+ grayling over 1lb (10 over 2lb) Some Highlights so far for 2017: - Couple of nice Grayling (still in season when caught)!

5 Fly Tying Corner The mark 29 PTN as promised (now the season has ended) Dressing Hook Kamasan B175 size 14 Tail Cock Pheasant centre tail Body - Cock Pheasant centre tail Shellback Mirage Tinsel (large) Rib Fine gold wire Collar Straggle Fritz (Black or Green) Hackle Hen (Pale Ginger or Black) Bead Copper coloured tungsten 2.4mm Tip This fly came about after the white beaded fly started to slow up. I found, at the start of the season, the fly needed to be dark, so black straggle with a black hackle worked well, but by the end of April, early May a lighter colour was needed, so green straggle and a pale ginger worked better. By the end of August, it was back to dark again. My preference is to fish two PTN s, one white - one copper on a short line, but as in all things fishy it pays to vary the flies and distance, they are also a pain to cast on a short rod. Fly Tying Evenings Please check the website for details, but normally the 2 nd and 4 th Mondays of the month at Rossett Village Hall 7pm to 9pm. The Club does have several fly-tying kits, a vice and the various basic tools that are needed, so you do not even need to buy anything before you have a go.
