Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. It is overcast and windy, the perfect fishing weather for Pyramid. It s great that we re getting a little more snow in the mountains as we certainly need it. The RGJ printed an article last week stating that the Truckee River would run strong all year, which is a good thing. Law determines flows to the Truckee and upstream reservoirs are required to support that flow if possible. The summer flows are 500 cfs. Although the Truckee River might be secure, other water bodies will be hurting including the Carson River, the Walker River, Lahontan Reservoir, Washoe Lake, Wildhorse Reservoir, Rye Patch Reservoir and Frenchman s in California. If the fish are still alive, low reservoirs and rivers can produce great fishing, as the fish become concentrated as the water levels drop. There is no general meeting in April, but we do have the fishout at Pyramid on April 19th. Judy Crosby has agreed to cook tri tip with assorted sides (lunch at 1 pm under the tent). We will be charging $15.00 for the meal and $5.00 for the big fish contest, so bring a twenty. A Cabelas LSi 9 foot, 8 weight rod will be given away to the person who lands the longest cutthroat. There are also several donated dinners left over from the banquet that will be in the general raffle along with other goodies. This might be the first time in several years that we have a fishout at Pyramid and the fishing is good. I fished last Tuesday at the North Nets and landed 6 fish. I counted 26 chairs and ladders in the water. Even Curt caught fish. I will be set up at one of the tables at the North Nets at 8 am with coffee, donuts and Big Fish Forms. Remember, your fish has to have one witness signature. The contest will run from 8 am to 5 pm. I m working on finding a speaker for the May 28th general meeting. I hope to get one of the staff working on Independence Lake to give us a talk on their work over the past several years. It s a beautiful place to fish and they provide boats (with motors), kayaks and pontoon boats. All for free. If you grow tired of fishing at Pyramid, give Squaw Valley Reservoir or Hinkson a shot. 2 The Anglers Line Page 2 Parachute Fly Tool by Bud Johnson Most Dry fly Fishers are well aware of parachute style dry flies and how effective they are in deceiving trout. However, I do hear some tiers complain about the problems that occur when applying the hackle to the sometimes wiggly posts. You may overcome this problem with a simple attachment for your vise which makes it a bit easier to use and quite simple to build. I use my vise with the arm set at about 45 degrees, but see no difficulty with the device used on rotary style vises. Materials Needed: 12 inches of.040 hard music or spring steel wire. A flexible hose clamp to fit your vise arm. Small hackle pliers or other type clamp. Install the wire held by the hose clamp, tighten then gently bend the wire in a loop so that the hook end with the pliers attached will pull the post straight up, right angle to the hook shank. I am partial to white Poli Pro for the posts. I tie it in a loop and then hold it under tension with the hackle pliers. Or you can eliminate the pliers and hook the Poli Pro loop in the bend. After the hackle is wound and tied off, I cut the loop open and slightly flair the two halves to become a single post, then shorten to whatever height preferred. 3 The Angler s Line Page 3 Meet the Board by Mike Hoffman This Month s submission comes from Mike Hoffman: Born and raised in Southern California in a family that fishing, hunting and camping was what we did together. Probably at about five or six years old my dad took us Trout fishing to the Sierras and that was it, hooked for life! During junior high school I started surfing and I followed that addiction until the early nineties hitting all the spots I could in California, Mexico and Hawaii. In 1968 I purchased my first fly rod and reel and began fly fishing anywhere I could in So Cal. Soon we began venturing into the many streams and lakes of the Eastern Sierra, armed with dry flies, a few wet flies and only a floating line. Around that same time I was also doing some Ocean fishing and I learned that catching a 4 lb. Bonito on a 5 wt. fly rod was a real blast! My Dad owned a construction company so I got my first real job as a carpenter but as that died out I got back into trucking which I did as a part time job during college. I spent twelve years as a Teamster driver driving local, intra state and inter state long haul. Driving started to take a toll on me so I decided to give transportation management a try and I took a job as a supervisor working my way up to director of transportation. In 1985 along with a partner we started a third party warehousing business and two trucking companies that we ran successfully for over eight years. After a short attempt at an early retirement my wife and I moved to Reno in 1995 and I took a job running transportation for a logistics firm in Sparks. That same year I joined the Truckee River Flyfishers and started tying my own flies as my fishing days and fly loses drastically increased. Looking back it might have been cheaper to just buy them, but then again there is something very special about hooking Trout on a fly that you created. Previously I served on the board for over nine years and worked with or chaired the fly tiers round table, fish outs, conservation, banquet, membership and the newsletter. I was club V.P. from 2002 to 2004 and in 2012 I was awarded with the Cal Bird Cup for many years of teaching and sharing our local fly patterns. For the past eighteen years I have been fly fishing our Northern Nevada and California lakes and rivers every chance I get. I don t know which I enjoy more fishin or tying flies but they sure keep me busy. In 2007 I retired for the last time! Recently I got back into ocean fishing going Long Range out of San Diego down to Baja, great fun! I live in Reno with my youngest daughter Shannon and I have two older kids, Allison and Drew, who live in So Cal. Keep a tight line!

4 The Angler s Line Page 4 April 2014 Prospects by Wes Ong Pyramid Lake: Lately at the Nets, I have caught no Pilot Peak fish. I don t believe that they are trained to come back to the Nets in April to spawn. If you were at the February meeting with the US Fish and Wildlife Service presentation, they stated that the mature spawning fish were in the 10 to 15 pound range. Can you imagine cruising groups of fish at the Nets that big! I think that the Pilots will be down at the South end of the lake, but they were at the South end in December and I have not heard many big fish reports lately. Water at the fish way should be on by now. Fish out, barbeque, and contest on the 19 th of April. Truckee River: There should not be a significant run off this year, so that means that several hatches that we don t get to fish in normal run off years will be available to us. These are the golden stone hatch which occurs in May, and the green drake hatch which starts at the beginning of June. I only know one other fly fisher that has actually fished the green drake hatch on the Truckee. Little Truckee: With the small snow pack this year the fish have been getting some pressure from the locals. Use the usual small flies and fine tippets. East Walker River: Now that the California side is open all year, you can make a trip down there and have a lot of river to fish. Normally March is a good stonefly time and may carry over into April. Look for consistent flows for at least 4 days before making the trek down there. Hinkson Slough: With the oncoming of spring, the Slough should only get better based on the opener that we had. Smaller midges and finer tippet may be necessary as the season advances. Indian Creek Res. Last year the Carson Club had a great outing here in March. Ice has been off since late February and fishing has been ok. Frenchman and Davis Lake: Guys have been thinking of going up there but I have not heard from any members who have fished it this year. With the low snow pack this year, the road around the lake has been clear since February! Boat ramps could be an issue this year with the low water. Eastern Nevada: Illapah has been ice free since the middle of March, Wildhorse is very low and I am not sure if it is iced off yet. Ruby Marsh was hot in March and I expect it will hold until April! Sleepers: Almanor near the Hamilton Branch, might be able to get in to Milton on the opener with the small snow pack. Project Healing Waters by John Imsdahl We had our first "program recovery" fly tying session on March 20th. While the volunteers outnumbered the veterans, Project Healing Waters, Reno, is making a comeback and we are assured there will be an even larger number of veterans at our April 17th session. A special THANK YOU must be given to all of our TRFF volunteers: Mike Hoffman, Ron Reitz, Jim Kwasny, Harry Prall and Joe Cendagorta for their contributions and participation. These men are the very best that this program and the VA could hope for as they are thoughtful, skilled and compassionate instructors. Finally, additional appreciation must be given to Michael Hoffman for all of his dedicated time on the phone, and in person, giving guidance and insight.
