Chapter members have a passion for flying and are willing to share it with others. Chapter 113 provides the opportunity for exchange of information, as well as the interaction that leads to friendships that last a lifetime. BOARD Of DIRECTORS: The Board of Directors are to provide both advice and assistance to the chapter officers on an ongoing basis.

3 PREsIDENT s PODIUM John Maxfield (248) avee8rrr@yahoo.com October 2015 Fall is in the air here in Southeast Michigan. The cool air is great for flying and the trees are mere days away from their annual color explosion. The Mettetal Airport Open House was well attended. Interest in EAA was high as we toured guests through our building, including some former members and families that happily recalled many of the people and planes on the meeting room wall. The Garden City Jr. ROTC group had their Young Eagle s Day at Mettetal October 3rd, our Thanks to all that participated. Due to the sale of the Newbury Airport in Ohio this year, the popular Mini-Chili Fly-In hosted by EAA Chapter 582 in Toledo has been moved to Haar Airport. Haar is on the Detroit Sectional, just south east of Toledo along the Ohio Turnpike. Its country atmosphere and grass runway will be ready for the October 25th event beginning at 11am. More information is at: Looking ahead to November, please mark your calendar for November 7th and 14th. Tracy Beckett s Young Astronaut Class is scheduled for Young Eagle flights on the 7th. Our annual Fall Chili Fly-In will follow on Saturday November 14th, from 11 to 3. These two events are on different days this year in an attempt to accommodate each more efficiently. We hope to see an increase in participation at both as a result. (Volunteers NEEDED for both!) Movie Nights also start on November 6th, join us for a block buster Aviation Film at 7pm in the EAA Meeting Room! Elsewhere in this newsletter is a plea for information from our Chapter Members and Spouses who have served in the U S Armed Forces. Debbie is working on a Chapter Project for next year and promises to use your information in confidence. Please help her along if you served, she ll be happy to discuss it with you at the number above if you prefer. David Brent spent most of September in Delaware studying at FlightSafety International. He emerged with a new Gulfstream V Type Rating. It won t be long before David is reading this newsletter from around the world. Congratulations David! This month s meeting is the official time to announce the Chapter Officer Nominations collected thus far for the November Election. Al Bosonetto welcomes your nomination at abosonetto@aol.com or I will be stepping down as the Chapter President at the end of the year and look forward to serving on the Chapter Board of Directors. It s not too late to step up and lend a hand in the Chapter s operation. The program this month features Martina and Oliver Reik who flew to N Fox Island and the Upper Peninsula in their Cessna 172. They also did some flying in Washington State, but I ll let them tell you that story! Sanjay flew his Quickie to Massachusetts recently and will share some of that trip with us as well. There's a quote included here for each of us, but Otto Lilienthal (pioneer aircraft builder) really captured the EAA spirit when he said: "To invent an airplane is nothing, To build one is something, To fly one is everything." 5 EAA 113 Wants YOU! This year is an Election year for EAA 113. It is an opportunity for YOU to participate in the business operation of our Chapter. We are seeking volunteers for all Executive Officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer as well as members to serve on the Board of Directors. All positions are for two year terms. Please thoughtfully consider how YOU can help your EAA Chapter. The Chapter By-Laws describe each position or any of the current Officers or Board Members would be glad to discuss the duties and time commitment required. The nominations will be presented to the Chapter at the October Meeting with a vote taking place during the November General Meeting. The transition of new leadership will begin in January. 8 QuICKIE TANDEM WING FLY-IN By sanjay Dhall I attended the 2015 Quickie Tandem Wing fly-in in Orange Ma. The flight was 650 statute miles each way, and my Quickie Q-200 performed well. There were five Quickies that made it to the event. I arrived there and parked last beside the others. All Photos Courtesy of Sanjay Dhall The Lobster feast cookout that the host Dave Dugas arranged. 9 All the Quickies lined up at sunset. The foreground plane is a modified Quickie with tricycle landing gear. This variation is called the Tri-Q. On my way back I had company from Orange to Cleveland two of the pilots heading back to Iowa. That s where I swung Northwest to come home. 9

11 seattle, WAsHINGTON, september 22, 2015 by Martina Reik We were on vacation to Seattle and got a check out on a C172 at Paine Field. From there we did some tours in the Seattle area. There was a TFR over Seattle on the really sunny day, but we got the opportunity for a scenic Seattle flight later that week. All Photos Courtesy of Martina Reik 11

12 upcoming Young Eagles Our last Young Eagle event for this year will be held on Saturday, November 7th from 9:00 am 12:00 pm at the EAA 113 Aviation Center. Our guests for this event will be the Southfield Young Astronaut Club. Tracy Beckett has been bringing this enthusiastic group for several years to enjoy several mini-aviation themed classes, in addition to their flight. To have successful events, we need help! We are looking for instructors, pilots and lots of ground support. We simply cannot have safe, efficient events with only a couple of volunteers. Unlike previous years, this event will be held the week prior to the Chili Fly-In, however, we will have pizza for the kids (and those that volunteer)! This is the most excited, appreciative group of students you will ever meet. If you would like to help out and share some of your passion for aviation to future generations, please let Debbie know. 12
