AMA CHARTER CLUB #397 NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS MAY, 2013 Welcome to the May flying season! The weather has been crazy as usual for our area this time of year. If you haven t been out to the field you better not wait for perfect weather or you will only get to fly twice this year. Like Rich Schaefer used to say The plane doesn t know it s windy. Flight Assistance is in full swing on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Tom Camp our Chief flight Instructor reports a good showing so far. Our first Intro to Flight event will be occurring on May 18 th and should be a great time. We have 4 visitors coming to the field on that day. The field will be open fly, just make sure we conduct ourselves in Prop Master style. This event will start off with a basic ground school, Field etiquette and markings followed by a test flight with an instructor. Remember to check with family and friends that would like to try our hobby. Those friends of ours to the North, the Barnstormers I think their name is; have not gotten back to us with suggested cross-town classic event. Probably because we have beaten them at every event they have come up with. In due course I told them if we don t hear back by the May meeting they are forfeiting the event. If they want to come by to fly and hang out watching a real club we would oblige of course I am kidding about the hanging out part. In any case, I am sure they will get back to us before our meeting on 5/28 so our Fun Fly 6/2 we will be practicing the event. Please mark that as a Honey the grass can wait, I have to practice because the Club President said so Sunday. Extra points always flow on these days too. wink, wink. ;o) We have 12 counted for the Minnie Mambo fly-in scheduled for September. Kits are still available contact me if interested. Great food will be provided to all Mamboians that will help to make it a great day. The field will be open fly all that day too. The first row of our 2 nd Annual Swap Event is just about full. Spots are going faster this year and the word must have spread about out 1 st class swap event. A flyer is included in this edition so make sure to mention it to all your flying buddies. Fly Safe, Have Fun The Prez.

Fun Fly Committee Winter Project Contest Report The annual Winter Project Contest was held at the April meeting. It s not really a contest though. Members just bring whatever they have completed over the winter and everyone at the meeting gets to vote on the best one. There may have been some questions concerning the voting. Everyone at the meeting was welcome to vote, however only 22 votes were cast. It just looked like there were more than 22 people at the meeting, but I could be wrong on the number of members in attendance. Back to the contest. As far as points go, everyone who entered got 50 Participation points right up front. Then we award points for the first five places. Fifty points for first, forty for second and so on. They way it worked out there was one first and second place finishers, and two third and fourth place finishers with everyone else, nine total, finishing fifth. Below are the results along with the number of points awarded. Finish Pilot s Name Model Participation Finish Pts. Total Pts. Pts. 1 st. Dave Engel Maxford Spad XIII nd. 9 Fun Fly Committee Fun Fly #4 Fast-N-Slow On Sunday, May 5 th, the club held the Fast-Slow Fun Fly Contest. The weather was wonderful sunny in the low 70s and the wind was from E-N-E at about 7 mph during the contest. It did get over 12 mph by late morning. The results of the two classes of planes were as follows: Planes Without Retracts & Flaps 1 st Place Hank Bourassa 2 nd Place Dave Carlson 3 rd Place Ray Good Planes With Retracts and/or Flaps 1 st Place Bill Hickey 2 nd Place Bruce Haynes 3 rd Place Jeff Gittelman Twelve club members attended the fun fly and eleven participated in the event. Special congratulations to Bill Hickey who had the largest speed difference between his fast and slow flights at over 61 mph. His fast pass was at 74.50mph (2.73 seconds) and his slow pass was at 13.15mph (15.23 seconds). You d be amazed at how long 15+ seconds is when flying across the field!! I also want to extend thanks to Tom Camp and Dave Cotton for continuing to share their experience and knowledge of the hobby and our field. More of you should try to attend these events not just for the auction points but for the camaraderie, the opportunity to learn, and of course for the fun! Hope to see you next month!! Jeff Gittelman and the Fun Fly Committee Annual Flight Box Beauty Contest On Tuesday May 28 th at the meeting, we will hold the annual Flight Box Beauty Contest. This is your opportunity to clean up, repack and rearm those flight boxes for the upcoming flying season. So drag those puppies out of the basement and let them see the light of day again and bring them to annual Flight Box Beauty Contest. Due to the large number of flight boxes entered each year, we recommend that you NOT bring anything for Show and Tell, as generally we are tight for table space and the beauty contest voting takes up a lot of the time. Here s how it works: Bring you flight box to the monthly meeting. Enter your flight box in the contest by filling out the signup sheet. Pick the category you want to enter and sign in on the next available line. The Categories are: Most Functional, Best Organized, Most Style and Back Breaker. At that time you will receive a number. That number will correspond to the sheet and line you signed in on. Affix that number to your flight box and set it up on one of the tables supplied.

Fun Fly Committee Each member in attendance will receive a ballot. Voting on the flight boxes will be held during the break and the winner will be announced at the meeting as soon as the ballots are counted. To vote you simply examine the flight boxes and write down the number of the flight box that you feel is the best in each of the categories. Don t forget to also vote for Best in Show. Remember any flight box is eligible for the Best in Show category The numbers on the flight boxes refers to the category the box is entered in. Flight boxes in the Most Functional category are numbered 1 99 Flight boxes in the Best Organized category are numbered Flight coxes in the Most Style category are numbered Flight boxes in the Back Breaker category are numbered The point awards will be the same as for a Fun-Fly. Thirty (30) points going to the winner in each category with twenty (20) for second place and ten (10) points for third. These are in addition to the ten (10) points awarded to everyone who enters the event. Larry Dudkowski and the Fun Fly Committee Prop Masters 500 The month of May is known for the Indy 500. The Prop Masters are going to make June known for the greatest spectacle in aero racing, the Prop Master 500. The date of the event is Sunday June 2 nd. Please sign in when you arrive, we will start as soon as pilots are ready, at approximately 10:00 am. Here s how it works. The plane begins at one end of the runway within the painted X. The pilot taxis the runway to the other side without taking off, turns around in the opposite X, taxis back to the starting X, turns around and then takes off. After the model passes the tall grass Beginners perform 1 circuit, Novice 1 loop, Advanced 2 loops, and Expert 3 loops. The model then must pass the center painted + on the runway before landing. The pilot may simply pass the center +and choose to go around in any fashion then land, or pass the + and land in one maneuver. Time stops after landing. Fastest time wins, pilots participate within their class. There will be 10 second penalties for the following: Running off the runway during taxing, not landing on the runway, and running into the weeds after landing. The use of spoilers is not allowed. Point Awards. Points will be awarded for first, second and third place finishes in each of the pilot classes. First place is worth thirty (30) points. Second place is worth twenty (20) points. Third place is worth ten (10) points. A one-time award of 10 points for participation will be made to each pilot flying the day of the event.

Museum of Aviation at Robins AFB Joe Bartek Museum of Aviation at Robins AFB, Warner Robins, GA On our way to Florida this year, we stopped at a fine aviation museum just a short drive from Exit 146 off I-75 South of Macon, GA, at Robins AFB. The museum s detailed web site has descriptions of the planes on display. I was particularly interested in the utility and observation planes, since I have 3 kits from these classes needing scale documentation. There are lots of other planes in hangars and on the grounds, ranging from a P-40 to a Blackbird. There are 17 cargo planes, including a Cessna Bamboo Bomber to a C141 Starlifter and 19 fighters, mostly jets. The six bombers include a B-25, a B-29 and a B-52. A Stearman biplane trainer is hanging in the main entrance hall along with a training glider from WWII under a sky painted ceiling. Utility and Observation Planes of Vietnam War Era in Hanger 1 DeHavilland U-6A "BEAVER" The U-6A (known as the L-20A until 1962) was manufactured by DeHavilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd. Between 1952 and 1960 nearly 1,000 were delivered to the US armed services. Most were used by the US Army, but more than 200 U-6As went into USAF inventory and were flown in utility transport and liaison roles. CESSNA L-19A (O-1E) "BIRD DOG" The O-1E is a two-place observation and liaison aircraft developed from the commercial Cessna Model 170 in Originally designated as L-19s, Bird Dogs were used by the USAF, Army, and Marines for such tasks as artillery spotting, front-line communications, medical evacuation, and pilot training.

Museum of Aviation at Robins AFB Joe Bartek CESSNA O-2A "SKYMASTER" The O-2 was a military version of the Cessna Model 337 Super Skymaster. Distinguished by twin tail booms and tandem-mounted engines, it featured a tractor-pusher propeller arrangement. HELIO U-10B "SUPER COURIER" The Super Courier is a light utility transport developed from a civilian design first tested in Its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability allows it to operate from a clearing the size of a football field and its ability to fly very slowly at speeds of approximately mph makes it an excellent aircraft for visual reconnaissance. STEARMAN PT-17 "KAYDET" (On Display in Eagle Building Entrance Rotunda) The PT-17 was typical of the biplane primary trainers using during the late 1930s and WWII. Whereas it was powered by a Continental engine, the same airplane with a Lycoming engine was designated the PT-13, and with a Jacobs engine, the PT-18.

Throttle Disable Jeff Gittelman Safety Throttle Disable for Electric Engine Using Futaba 7C FASST At the recent Fun Fly I accidently bumped the throttle while bending over my electric plane which resulted in a couple of cut fingers luckily nothing serious. David Cotton suggested the idea of programming a disable switch to prevent just this type of accident. In the programming example listed below, the throttle functions normally when the switch is in the up position. In the down position, no power can be applied to the motor. Use the down position any time the plane is not flying. If you inadvertently bump the throttle stick, nothing happens. The programming shown below is for a Futaba 7C. Note that the MASTER and SLAVE are the same the throttle channel is channel 3 on Futaba. P-MIX 1 > ON MAS > CH3 SLV > CH3 SW > G ^ (or another available switch) RT > -100% > -100% OFS > SET With the cursor on OFS>SET and the throttle stick closed, press and hold the dial/press control on the transmitter. Jeff Gittelman (An electric novice)

Hints, Information, Tips and Stuff Larry Dudkowski I m not sure who I got the original from but I found this interesting and hope that you do too. Pictured below is the world s THIRD LARGEST AIR FORCE. It s parked in the Arizona desert near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Just Google Air Force Bone Yard. There are a few websites with more interesting shots of the facility. But I think these give a good view of just how big it really is. And from the article, I understand that there are even tours of the facility. So if you re going out west this summer you might want to check this place out. Fly Smart, Fly Safe, Larry D
