Rod Building Saturday, December 12, 2009 Ooops! Grabbed an old notice from the web site last month I guess I ll have to add this to the newsletter bloopers file Fall Catch n Eat, Golden Meadow By Sheldon Anderson, News Letter Editor Master Cooks this year Kevin & Catch Another Great Job!!!! Our club cooks knock it out of park again!!! Another great group of guys enjoying the nice weather with the LSU game in the background. Wow, more food than we could eat! Thanks to all that that helped pull it together!!! JOB WEELL DONE!!! RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 3 Baton Rouge, La

I s I see Gary landed a very nice trout I think I heard someone say show off!!! Water was rather cold and the fish were in the deep holes for the most part, later in the day the warmer tides rolled in, the fish moved into more open water but seemed to concentrate at the mouth of the cuts where water was flowing. Some of the guys had a hard time finding fish whereas other caught their limit of trout. 2 buddies from Alexandria and I fished mainly north west of Leesville in the broken marsh, targeting Reds. Friday and Saturday, we caught 21 keepers and another 12 or so undersized reds. Even though the nats were horrible at times, the weather was nice which made for another great time fishing our Louisiana Marsh. Stories I m hearing, the big bull reds are moving into shallow flats mid-day along the outer edge of the marsh near deeper water. Also moving up into the mouth of the Mississippi. Just a quick note from the editor. I d like to wish all a Very Merry Christmas (Yes I said Christmas!!!!), a Happy and Prosperous New Year!!! RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 4 Baton Rouge, La

You never know who you ll run into at the launch By Sheldon Anderson, News Letter Editor My wife Carmen and I decided to take our 1 st trip to Venice, La. over the Thanksgiving weekend We rented one of the 1 bedroom Villas at the Lighthouse (which was great!!!!). As we pulled up Wed night, we saw a truck and 18 Flats skiff with Florida plates parked next to where we were to park. I commented to my wife the Florida guides sure like to fish La in the winter. Chasing the big reds I d beat!! then proceeded to unpack. The next morning, the wind was blowing 90 mph it seemed and knew it going to be hell to keep control of the boat. Launched the boat, tied up to the dock, then I noticed that same Florida rig about to launch. Ran back to park the van then back to the boat I walked. By now the mystery boat was tied up at the dock with a man in it with his back to me. As I approached, then passed him, not paying a lot of attention, I wished him a great day on the water. Something made me turn back and look at the gent, it was Roland Martin. After my double take, I paused in disbelief.. All that came out was looks like the pro is fishing today he smiled and said, only if the wind will let us Time was short, he was about ready to take off but he did pause long enough to say that the big bull reds were moving up the passes of the Mississippi river. They had been catching 20-30lb bulls in the main passes at the mouth of cuts into the marsh all week with 4-5 long minnows fishing in 3-5ft water. Then he was off with his wife and camera man Always pays to be friendly to those around you, you never know who you re talking to.. Fly Tyer s Bench by Emmitt Simmons Introduction Tis the Season Dreaming of a new Renzetti? How about a new Regal? This year why not think a little bit more about giving than getting. It won t cost you anything but a little time and patience. If you are an experienced tyer, seek out someone interested in the sport and show them a couple of simple flies. I know they will be fascinated as I was the first time I saw demonstrations at Red Stick Day. You just can t beat the excitement of introducing someone to the craft of fly tying. If you are just beginning, don t hesitate to mention to RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 5 Baton Rouge, La

someone in the club that you are interested in tying some flies. Most members, no matter what their skill level are more than willing to share their skills with beginners. Featured Tyer - Dirk Burton Bass Pro, Denham Springs, November 22, 2011 Dirk s Fish Xtractor Materials: Mustad X long shanked hook Small black bead chain (1/8 or smaller) Black and yellow barred round rubber legs Black and yellow floss or other suitable material for weaving the body Black Ultra thread in 140 and 70 denier Zap a Gap Head cement Begin by laying a base layer of 140 denier thread. Bring thread back to 1/4 point behind eye. Clip off two pieces of bead chain to make eyes. Tie in eyes with figure 8 pattern at point where thread was stopped in previous step. Take a section of barred rubber legs and fold in half. Tie in on top of hook and bring thread all the way back lashing legs down to the rear of hook shank. They should extend in a nice even V pattern from rear of hook. Bring thread back up to just behind bead chain eyes. Tie in one strand of floss on far side of shank and wrap tying thread back to end of hook shank making sure floss stays on the far side of the hook. Repeat on near side of hook with the other piece of floss. Build up a tapered tying thread underbody with the rear of hook shank being narrow and the fat part of taper behind bead chain eyes. Use a drop of Zap a Gap on thread wraps between bead chain eyes. Make a couple more figure 8's over the ones you put in earlier. Cut tying thread. Turn vise toward you so you are looking down the length of the hook. Invert the hook so the point is facing up. Using the overhand knot weave or granny weave, as it is sometimes called, tie a series of knots using the two different colors of floss around the hook to create the patterned body RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 6 Baton Rouge, La

with the black on top and yellow on bottom. Do this until you reach the halfway point of the shank. Cut two more lengths of rubber legs about 1 1/4 inches long. Tie one more knot in the floss, but do not cinch it down. Slip in the two legs on the upper side of the hook between the black floss and the hook shank. Cinch the floss down at this point. Tie two more overhand knots slipping them over the rubber legs and hook shank and cinching them down normally as you go. After you have done this adjust legs so they are splayed properly, in an X pattern. Now weave the remaining knots over the hook and in front of the legs to just behind the bead chain eyes. Start your 70 denier tying thread just ahead of the bead chain eyes. Bring the floss strands together, give them a twist. Lay this "rope" over the eyes, wrap the floss in securely, trim remainder off, and make a tapered head with the tying thread. Cut off thread and whip finish. Apply head cement, trim the legs and tail to desired length, and you're done. Next fly, the : Cajun Tickler Materials: Size 14 streamer hook 8/0 thread 1/8 gold bead Rayon embroidery thread in two contrasting colors Round rubber legs Peacock herl Grizzly hackle fibers Begin by opening the gap of the hook a bit with pliers. Bend the hook shank down somewhat to make a more bug like body shape. Place the bead on the hook and slide it up to the eye Start the thread behind the bead and wrap back into the hook bend. Tie in four or five grizzly hackle fibers. Tease out one or two strands of thread (there are six in each piece of rayon) from a six inch piece RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 7 Baton Rouge, La

of the rayon weaving material. Tie in along the side of the hook shank from the back to just about the halfway point of the shank. Repeat with the other section of rayon on the other side of the hook. Tie in a half hitch and cut off so you can begin weaving. Use the overhand knot weave to make an abdomen up to the halfway point on the shank. Start your tying thread again and secure both pieces of weaving material. Trim the ends and put in another half hitch. Wrap your thread forward 3 or four turns and tie in a strand of peacock herl. Allow it to lie out past the rear of the hook. Put the rubber legs into three one inch sections. Lay the first one across the top of the hook just forward of the woven section, and tie it in using light thread tension with a figure eight wrap. It should resemble a wing on an airplane. After it is secure, make a couple of regular wraps around the shank and slip in another section of leg on the rear of shank and tie this in with medium pressure. Repeat on the far side with the last section of leg. From above, the legs should resemble an X with a cross box bisecting them. Wrap forward making sure not to alter the pattern the legs are splayed in. Place a drop of head cement on top of the legs to secure them in this shape. Palmer the peacock herl around, over and between the legs until it is behind the bead. Tie it in and trim the end off the herl. Whip finish, and apply head cement. December 2011 Featured Tyer - Roger Del Rio Orvis, Baton Rouge, LA Monday, December 19, 7:00PM. Fishes with Wind will be demonstrating his famous Flip Flop Popper. Note that this will be a demonstration only as the pattern has too many steps to be completed in the allotted time. That s a wrap for this month. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Orvis this Month. Have a great Christmas. Good Fishing to All, Emmitt Simmons RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 8 Baton Rouge, La

Leaders for the Fly: in 9 Parts by Bill Brown, Membership Chair Part 4 - Cold Water Leaders Leaders for fishing for cold water species tend to be longer and thinner than those for either warm water or salt water, mainly because the flies can be smaller, but also because the water is usually clearer; therefore, the fish can see the leader more easily. Here are some of the leader designs for cold water that have been used successfully. The 60/20/20 Formula Leader One of the simplest general taper formulas around today is the 60/20/20 Formula. It states, if I m reading it correctly, that one should make a butt section out of a single level line to be 60% of the total length of the leader. This is to be followed by a tapered midsection (multi-piece) that s 20% of the length of the line. This section starts out with a piece of line whose stiffness is short of that of the butt section and ends with a piece of line just stiffer than the tippet. The remaining 20% is the tippet. I have read that most of the manufactured one piece tapered leaders are made to this formula. I ve found it very hard to use leaders made from this formula. When you do the math on the part of the leader before the tippet, you ll find that the stiff butt section is actually 75% of the leader, excluding the tippet, and you have to step down the stiffness in just 24 inches on an 8 leader. This formula lends itself to the shorter stiffer leaders. Table 3 shows the breakdown of such a leader using some of the materials I have used. Code for the table: T/xx = Trilene XT / test st.; O/xx/xx = Orvis tippet/size/test st. Twenty four inches of 3X tippet is added at the end to complete the line. Table 3 An 8 ft. Joan is, in her own right, a fly-fishing guru and is credited with getting more women into the sport, among other things. People are always experimenting to find a good leader design to get a soft lay-down for fishing with dry flies for trout. She suggested one start with a manufactured tapered leader and add to it, especially when you RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 9 Baton Rouge, La

need to get down to very small diameter tippets. It s not actually a hand-tied leader in the strictest sense, but some portion of it is. You may find it fits with your needs. Tables 4 and 5 show the break-down of two leaders using this design. Table 4 A 10 ft. He uses a leader material called Maxima Chameleon (MC) for his line material. Tables 6 through 8 show three different tapers of his design, based on use Table 6 A 5 ft. 12 Butt Taper 1 Taper 2 Tippet MC dia. MC dia. 0X or 1X 3X or 4X or 5X The Harvey Style Leader Another design concept found in Gary Borger s book came from a man named George Harvey, who found that when his casts ended up with the line perfectly straight, he couldn t get drag-free drifts with dry flies. He designed a leader taper with a more flexible butt sections and longer, thinner tippets to make the line fall in S curves which allows a period of drag-free drift to occur. Table 9 shows an example of a Harvey design Table 9 An 8 ft. Harvey style Trout Leader + 48 tippet for dry fly dead drifts (total length = 12 ) Butt Taper Tippet MC MC dia. 3X 4X or 5X dia The Ritz Formula Leader One of the oldest designs, which was first published in the 1940 s when monofilament first came out, came from an early trout guru named Charles Ritz, one time president of the Ritz Hotel chain. As an avid fly-fisherman he invented the parabolic taper for fly rods and the following leader design, which reportedly, is always accurate and lays out straight even in the wind. He authored the book A Fly Fisher s Life on the subject of trout fishing and was the founder of the Fario Club, an exclusive fly fishing club in the 1950 s and 60 s. Table 10 shows an example of his design. Table 10 An 8.3 ft.
