2 Dear Customer, First off, on behalf of the staff at Michael and Young, we would like to wish you and your families the very merriest of Christmas s, and an awesome holiday season! We hope 2018 is filled with smiles and great fishing. We would also like to thank all of you for your kind patronage this past year since we would not be here without you! For the last 12 years we have held an annual Spey Day and it has become our customer appreciation day, our EVENT OF THE YEAR. This free venue allows you, our customers, a chance to try before you buy, an opportunity to come out and play with most all of the new rods and lines in the SPEY world. It also allows you to watch world class demos on the various topics in the vast realm that is spey. Thank you to all that attended and presented. With the help of generous donations from our suppliers, we hold a fundraiser every year at this event and this past year we raised almost $8, with the proceeds split between the BCFFF and the Steelhead Society of BC. We hope next year s event, to be held on Saturday April 7, 2018, will be bigger and better than ever before. As is always the case, a PDF version of this Holiday Flyer will be posted on our website at This is a scary time We are watching our salmon and steelhead stocks drop to record lows and are very worried about their futures. The legendary Thompson is expected to have much less than 200 steelhead spawning in all of its tributaries; Skeena salmon and steelhead returns were well below average; Pink returns were much lower than expected, so low that the Fraser remained closed for most of the run. Chinook numbers were very low in most of the Fraser tributaries. There are many factors in play contributing to environmental and fish health. Some close to home, some in the middle of the ocean, some environmental, some political, and some plain human greed. A friend shared an analogy any user (sport, commercial, FN, even predators like whales and seals and resource users like irrigation, fish farming, mining, Hydro, etc.) we are all drinking from the same bucket (blaming one another for taking too much) but there is a hole somewhere in our bucket that needs to be plugged and we can t find it without everyone helping out. The only for sure is you can help by reaching out to BC Steelhead Society, the Sport Fishing Institute, BCFFF, or other organizations gathering bodies and voices to try and make a difference. Being in BC we are blessed with an amazing Stillwater fishery that is well managed and full of opportunity s of lakes throughout the province are stocked for you and I to enjoy. The insane fires this summer kept many of us away from our favorites, but, sent us on adventures to new possible favorites. We heard some fantastic stories and saw some amazing pictures. Whether you enjoy chironomid fishing, stripping flies, or trolling you will find some quality fish and fishing throughout the province. We have our annual fly fishing Stillwater School June 8-11 at Roche Lake Resort. For the river fisherman there are countless rivers and streams throughout the province that are world class. Maybe a bit of effort to get to but amazing. Included in those is the Skagit which had a good season - plump healthy rainbows and bull trout, great dry fly fishing, and stunning surroundings. For any of you looking to get away on a tropical fishing adventure Christmas Island has become an annual event for us, so if you ever want to put your name on the list, just call the shop and we will try to accommodate. At the time of writing we are full for early March 2018 and are taking names for This year Pierre Morel joined our team as did a few great part time helpers in Jesse Brown, Matt Fitzgerald, and Jack White. If any of you have been thinking about Aaron Goodis he is recovering well and has started a few shifts back at our Vancouver location. Come visit him on Thursday mornings in Vancouver! Our man Gary Slang has been helping out on the odd Sunday as well.
