1 Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Ecological and Water Resources Hydrologic Conditions Report Previous reports at: The preliminary statewide precipitation total for was 3.98 inches or 1.57 inches above normal. There were two heavy rain episodes. One was on October 2-3 and another on October 6-7. The first event was more significant and impacted much of Minnesota with many locations seeing one to three inches. The final week of October turned wintry, with many locations in Minnesota seeing some snow. Despite the cool finish, was warmer than normal for the month. The preliminary statewide average for was 48.2 degrees or 2.2 degrees above normal. The U. S. Drought Monitor map released on October 31, depicted a small area of north central Minnesota in the Moderate Drought category. About nine percent of the state was Abnormally Dry. A majority of the gages in the state reported high flows when compared to historical monthly data. Portions of northwest and north central Minnesota were within the normal range and the Mississippi River Headwaters and the Leech Lake watersheds were below normal. When comparing lake levels to their entire historic record, approximately 48% of the statewide gauged lakes were in the Normal percentile, 42% above normal or high, and 10% below normal or low. In October 2017, 64% of the reporting lakes were above their average lake level of the entire historic record, with 14% at their average, and 22% of the lakes below their average lake level. Thirty-two percent of the statewide reporting lakes have lake levels more than ½ foot higher than their average. A large number of lakes had increased lake levels in the first few weeks of October after precipitation events. Some lakes in Crow Wing and Douglas Counties reached their highest ever reported lake level. Looking at only October lake level comparisons in this report, thirteen of the 24 selected lakes showed High or Above Normal percentiles, while one lake in the Northwest was at Below Normal percentile. Groundwater levels in show average to above average groundwater level measurements throughout much of the state. For sites where data was provided, groundwater levels were at normal (50%) to above normal (75%-90%) or high water level (>90%). More data for groundwater monitoring sites would be needed to determine if this was a regional or statewide pattern, however, higher than average groundwater levels were found throughout Central and Eastern regions of the state. Of note, there are several water table and buried artesian wells in Western Minnesota showing lower than average water levels paralleling water level patterns in September The information in this report is provided by DNR through long term programs committed to recording and tracking the long term status of our water resources. The current conditions of precipitation, stream flows, lake levels and ground water levels in this report provide valuable information for natural and economic resource management on a state, county and watershed level. If you have questions on the content of this report please contact DNR Climatology Office: climate@umn.edu
