1 The F A L L Magnolia Elementary Physical Education Newsletter I Good SPORTSMANSHIP Physical education not only teaches the psycho-motor domain but the cognitive and affective domains as well. My goal is to have every student experience success. I do not stress competition. Instead I stress that if you do your best then you are a winner. Good sportsmanship and teamwork are very important not only in the PE but in real life situations too. Good sportsmanship is always required in class! Hello! My name is Seantae Beard and I have been a Physical Educator in Prince George s County for 10 years. I received my Bachelor of Science from Temple University and will be receiving my Master s Degree in Educational Administration from Trinity Washington University in December It is my pleasure to teach your child Physical Education this year. I thought it would be beneficial to let you know what s going on in P.E. at Magnolia. I m excited about the school year and look forward to working with you all! Save the Date! Thanksgiving Break 11/26-11/30 Half Day 12/10/14 :
2 Lesson Objectives For the months of November and December students in grades K-2 will work on Basic Skills- Throwing & Catching. Grades 3-6 will begin Soccer. Basic Skills The foundation of the elementary physical education program is the teaching of basic skills. It is essential that students master these basic skills at the primary level in order to apply them to lifelong activity. After students have first been taught the basic skills and have practiced them in isolation, students should be given opportunities to use them in a game or activity. The basic skills of throwing, catching, dribbling, striking, and kicking are the foundations for most sports and games. Throwing and Catching Benchmarks: K/1 st : Roll a ball with two hands from a straddle position Students will demonstrate overhand throwing mechanics Students will demonstrate the underhand throwing mechanics Students will bounce and catch a ball to self with two hands 2 nd Grade Students will throw a ball overhand demonstrating side orientation and foot opposition Students will demonstrate the underhand throwing mechanics Students will toss a ball overhead to self and catch Students will throw overhand and hit a stationary target 2
