Row six: Ryder Sroufe, Brock Snouffer, Jackson Wilcoxson, Javier Perez, Rob Wood, Ryan Mosher, Logan Smith, Caleb Rans,Trefor Gatchell, Grady Hicks and Austin Bolt. Coach Fox, the Eagles ready for 2015 COLUMBIA CITY After losing what Head Coach Brett Fox says to be 91 percent of last year s offense, the Columbia City Eagles will look to returning players to keep the offense alive. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? We lost Braden Meyer, who broke the single-season rushing record last season, quarterback Trevor Bolt and wide receivers Drew O Dell and Dayne Asplund. We also lost four starters on the offensive line. That s going to be tough to replace. 2. Who are your key returning players? Returning guys are Ryan Mosier at wide receiver, Carson Reed at running back and we have a lot of guys coming back on defense. Bronson Ball, Kolten Wood, Cody McClure and Drew Lamle started last year and they are ready to go this year on defense. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? It looks like Brock Snouffer is going to play some quarterback. Replacing Bolt is a tough thing to do but I think he is ready for it. Jackson Wilcoxson will play some linebacker and O-line. Also, Khale Rider got some playing time last year but I think he is ready to step into his role an become a varsity player this year. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? I think the biggest obstacle is the strength of schedule. The conference is tough and our nonconference opponents are tough as well. Each week we have to continue to fight no matter who were are going against because no outcome is guaranteed. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? Offensively, I like to run the ball. I like to control the clock as much as possible and try to establish a run. Last year, Braden Meyer was able to set the single-season rushing record for our school and hopefully we can continue to build off of that with some of the running backs we have this year. 6. What position poses the biggest need for you this year? If we have question marks this year, it s going to be on the offensive line and finding other guys to fill in there and be consistent and fight in the trenches.

Sade ready for year 2 with Eagles Photo contributed / Carey Jacquay Photography CHURUBUSCO With several starters from last year s offensive backfield returning, the key for the Eagles and Churubusco Head Coach Paul Sade will be to fill gaps on both the offensive and defensive lines. 1. We return Drew Buffenbarger at quarterback, Landon Harris at running back, Chance Gallmeier at a wide receiver slot, Nash Wood at outside linebacker and Carson Gatton as a lineman. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? I look for contributions from Trey Mayer at running back and defensive back and Carlin Amber at wide receiver and defensive back. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? This year one of the challenges facing Churubusco football will be to overcome a lack of size and depth. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? The emphasis of our program this year will be to be tough and to play physical. 6. What position poses the biggest need for you this year? With graduation losses, I think that the biggest need for the Eagles this season will be developing offensive and defensive linemen. 7. What are the highlights or measuring stick games on your schedule this year? We will be looking to see how we fare against Lewis Cass on week two, Garrett on week three and Eastside in week four.

8 A8 August Fall Sports Preview Columbia City Volleyball Front row, from left: manager Caitlyn Rupert, Molly Green, Laurisa Rehrer, Hannah Clark, Breanna Lahr, Alyssa Collins and manager Cracie Newton. Back: Head Coach Shannon Rehrer, Taryn Cook, Bella Krieg, Leah Mills, Avery Sparks, Jayla Wigent and Assistant Coach Caitlyn Starkey. New coach looking for offensive power COLUMBIA CITY Columbia City volleyball has a new coach, but one with a familiar face. Shannon Rehrer was the varsity assistant and JV coach last year. She takes over the varsity team this year. Rehrer will attempt to fill some offensive holes in the middle of the front row and along the back row that have been left by graduation. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? Key losses to graduation would be libero Macie Hinen and middles Sydney Burdge and Bayley Smith. 2. Who are your key returning players? Key returning players are Avery Sparks and Laurisa Rehrer, both outside hitters. Hannah Clark will move from defensive specialist to libero. Molly Green, Jayla Wigent and Taryn Cook all return with hitting experience. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? Leah Mills will play middle. Alyssa Collins will be setting and Breanna Lahr will be a defensive specialist. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? Our biggest challenge will be playing bigger than we are since our tallest player is 6 foot, 1 inch, but then everyone else is 5 foot, 9 inches or smaller. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? Playing together as a team, never giving up and staying healthy. 6. What position poses the biggest need for you this year? Post & Mail photo / Mark Parker We don t have much varsity experience with our setters other than Laurisa Rehrer, who set some her sophomore year. Also our middles don t have a lot of experience. 7. What are the highlights or measuring stick games on your schedule this year? As we do every year, we want to build each game so that when conference matches start we are playing well together. We also want to prepare for each match to do well in the conference leading into post-season sectionals. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? We had four strong seniors who graduated, but I feel between the juniors moving up to varsity and the returning players, we will be just as strong. 2. Who are your key returning players? Middle blockers Whitney Marsh and Emily Day, and outside hitter Kaity Reed. I m looking for opposite player Brianna Tackett and setter Haley Yohe to be key players. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? There are two freshmen, Kristina Slater and Shianna Bradley, who are great all-around players who will be an asset to the program in the coming years. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? Fine tuning basic skills is the biggest challenge. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? Basic skill development will be a focus throughout the whole program. 6. What position poses the biggest need for you this year? The need for a libero/defensive specialist. 7. What is something interesting or unusual that you are seeing this year? The team as a whole is very close this year. I have eight juniors and four seniors returning for both JV/ Post & Mail photo / Nick Rupert Varsity teams, with no sophomores. They have also welcomed the four freshmen and treat them as equals, not as the stereotypical underclassman. 8. What are the highlights or measuring stick games on your schedule this year? Rochester and Southwood are always tough Three Rivers Conference matches. 9. Any other comments? This will be a rebuilding year for the Whitko volleyball program. We have all new coaches from 6th grade to varsity. Roster VARSITY NO. Churubusco will also be trying to fit in a new setter for the upcoming season. The development of these two parts of the Churubusco offense will go a long way to determining the team s success this season. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? We lost Alisha Farner who was a powerhouse on the outside position, as well as Olivia Huelsenbeck who played right side. 2. Who are your key returning players? We have Elaine Horn returning as a defensive specialist and right side player, Alyssa Anderson as a middle hitter, Jazlyn Needler as libero, Sarah Holloway and Mallory Pearson at the outside hitter position and Mariah Nondorf as a middle hitter, all returning for us this year with playing experience. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? We have Rachel Jacquay stepping in as a freshman for us, who will make an impact for our team with her setting. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? Our team has an immense amount of potential for this season. It ll be our job to come together as a team and outwork every opponent we face. We will need to rise to the occasion when good teams challenge us because we have the ability to not only compete with them, but also be successful against the top teams. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? The goal for this year s program will be to improve on every level. We want to build a strong foundation starting with the 6th grade team by simply getting them exposed to the sport and educated. We want to do the same thing for the 7th- and 8th-grade teams by getting them prepared and ready for the intensity of high school, and by getting the JV ready for varsity. We are looking at the program as a long marathon not a sprint. Improvement every day is what we re striving for. 6. What position poses the biggest need for you this year? We are really looking for someone to step up and take on the role of terminating the ball. We have many decent hitters, but we are seeking someone we can go to who can consistently put the ball away when we are in trouble. 7. Something interesting or unusual that you are seeing this year. It will be interesting to see how Rachel Jacquay impacts our team as the setter. We have a lot of experienced players coming back with a mix of new freshman. 8. What are the highlights or measuring stick games or meets on your schedule this year? We are really taking it one match at a time this year, again looking for improvement every time we step on the court. We want to outwork the other team and be smart with our strategies. Back: Head Coach Andrew Thompson, Macenzie Lane, Leonie Trabert, Emilee Smith, Erin Trabert, Taylor Daniel and coach Chris Bechtold. Lady Eagles off to a strong start in golf By MARK PARKER The Post & Mail COLUMBIA CITY Before the season began, Columbia City Head Girls Golf Coach Andrew Thompson was worried about numbers. But after getting enough girls out to field both a varsity and JV squad, Thompson s concerns turn to different numbers scores. We started the summer thinking that we would only have to replace one-fifth of our varsity lineup due to Cheyanne Johnson s graduation, said Thompson. But we ended up having to replace two other varsity spots or three-fifths of our varsity lineup, when Athena Arnold and Sydney VanMeter chose not to return. The Eagles do return a strong nucleus from a team that went -4 and tied for first in the now-defunct Northeast Hoosier Conference. Seniors Taylor Daniel and Macenzie Lane will have to carry a great deal of the burden for the Lady Eagles. Lane was a First-Team All-Conference selection in 2014 and averaged 44.8 strokes per nine-hole round last year. Daniel led the Lady Eagles in their season-opener at Wawasee. Thompson lists four or five players who could either challenge for the remaining varsity spots or find themselves rotating through the available slots. Those players include juniors Taylor Glass, Abbey Polanco and Erin Trabert. Polanco played to a 56.2 average last year, with Trabert right behind at 58 strokes per round. Glass had an average of 60 during the 2014 season. Thompson also listed incoming freshman Leah Bechtold as a possible varsity contributor. Rounding out the rest of the Eagle lineup are Mekynzie Rice, sophomores Kellie Frie and Emilee Smith, and freshmen Lindsey Hoskins and Leonie Trabert. Aug. A 7:30 a.m. Whitko golf ready for new season with new coach SOUTH WHITLEY New Whitko girls golf Head Coach Mike Hanback is emphasizing minimizing mistakes with his young and largely inexperienced team that features three freshmen and two juniors. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? Our biggest losses were April Bishop and Elizabeth Gensch. These two played at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots almost all season last year. 2. Who are your key returning players? Returning for us are Claire Reiff and Aurelia Slusher, who are both juniors this year. I foresee both of them playing within the top three slots all season. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? Our newcomers will be freshmen Holly Hathaway, Alexys Rider and Makayla Compton. All three played golf as 8th-graders at the middle school, and will round out our team this season. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? Our team is pretty young. The girls playing No. 1 or 2 this year did not play those slots at all last season, so it promises to be an adjustment for them. With the addition of three freshmen, it is easy to say why we will still have some growing pains. All have some match experience though, so that is a plus for the team. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? The emphasis on play this year will be from short distance 40 yards or so in. What position poses the biggest need for you this year? Because of our youth and lack of depth, our No. 5 position is the most important to me. Makayla has played there the last few matches, and continues to improve her scores each match. We just need to make sure we are on the course, striking the ball consistently and each girl is learning what they are capable of from every position around the course. 7. What are the highlights or measuring stick matches on your schedule this year? Most probably, the match against Warsaw because of the course, which none of the girls who have played there in the past like. It is a differnt kind of course than those that we usually play, but it is the site of the sectional. As for opponents, it will be interesting to see how we match up against Manchester and how the girls focus on teams such as Wawasee and Columbia City. Both of these opponents are strong teams and I want our girls to go in unafraid and confident in their own abilities and games. 8. Any other comments. Our team may be young, but we are looking ahead instead of behind at who we lost to graduation. Each girl has the potential to be a good golfer and we look forward to the challenge of achieving the best from each of them. The coach, Elizabeth Gould, is brand new and every girl on the team is brand new, since this is the first year for Churubusco to field a golf team for quite some time. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? Its a new team and program this year so there are no losses. 2. Who are your key returning players? Since the program didn t exist last year we also have no returnees. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? They all have been doing great, but I have seen a lot of potential from Cassidy Yant, Paige Stauffer and Katelyn Johnson. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? Being completely new is the biggest challenge. Every girl started playing golf just this summer. We have been spending a lot of time going over the basics. The girls are doing a great job keeping up with the experienced players in terms of rules and etiquette. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? The emphasis this year will be on the basics. Rules, ettiquete, swing, club usage, distance, etc. Learning how to play golf and be a team. They have really bonded so far, so I am looking forward to seeing what happens the rest of the season! 6. Something interesting or unusual that you are seeing this year. It has been very interesting starting out with brand new girls and a new program. The last girls golf team here (I think) was in the 1980s. 7. We will emphasize being match-competitive. We want to be competitive throughout each match at each position. 6. What is the biggest need or obstacle this year? Due to our low numbers last year, we have a lack of match experience. As the year progresses the Eagles should benefit from increased practice and match time. 7. What is something interesting that you are seeing this year? After the lower numbers last year, it s interesting that this year we have a full team. 8. Numbers are a concern for a young Whitko team. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? Cole Bechtold was our only graduating senior last year. 2. Who are your key returning players? Key returning players from last year are junior Bailey Platt playing No. 1 singles and senior Nick Rose playing No. 1 doubles. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? We are excited to have several new players this year, including Micah Cokl, Austin Hollowell, Cory Hersha and Tim Gensch. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? The biggest challenge to success this year is the level of experience overall on the team. This year will be the first time playing tennis at this level for many of the guys, however, they are working hard and eager to learn. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? The team focus and emphasis is to continue demonstrating sportsmanship as well as striving for daily growth both as a student and an athlete. It is important to be a better person today than you were yesterday, not only in tennis, but in all areas of life. 6. Something interesting or unusual that you are seeing this year. Everyday is an adventure with these guys! They are a great group of young men. They are respectful, diligent in practice, but also know how to have fun and enjoy life. I am really looking forward to watching them continue to grow throughout the season. 8. What are the highlights or measuring stick matches on your schedule this year? All the matches should be considered highlights or measuring stick matches this season. With our goal to continually learn and evolve, there is something that can be learned from any match we play. Whether it is improving groundstrokes, consistency, strategy, mental toughness or attitude, we always have areas we can improve. The final score doesn t always tell the story. Do I want to win? Absolutely! However, if one of my players goes up against a more experienced ranked player, and demonstrates mental toughness, consistency and gives 100 percent but he loses the match, I can accept that. Row two: Joe Willson, Doug Hill, Jake Hinen, Tanner Clark, Reece Baron and Brendan Roberts. Row 3: Head Coach Bob Fahl, Nick Compton, Gage Emrick,Tim Hearld, Andrew McFarland, Jake Matteson and Asst. Coach Ashley Cearbaugh. COLUMBIA CITY Columbia City Cross Country Coach Bob Fahl starts the season with high expectations for both the boys and girls teams. Standing in the way of those high expectations is the need to replace several key components from last year s teams. Both the boys and the girls lost senior leadership, with the girls team also losing a key component to injury. A great deal of the teams success will depend on how well they fill in the gaps left by those absences 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? On the boys side we lost senior team leader Evan Sauers. For the girls our losses were Samina Qureshi, a senior leader to graduation and Alissa Jagger, a steady top runner for us at the conference meet to a career-ending injury due to a car accident. 2. Who are your key returning players? For the Columbia City boys, the key returners are Andrew McFarland, Gage Post & Mail photo / Mark Parker Emrick, Tim Hearld, Jake Matteson, Nick Compton, Daniel Watts, Ashtin Lee and Jake Hinen. For the girls, our key returners are Hannah Wappes, Bailie Brown, Lauren Keller, Natalia Johnson, Karina Rubrake and Isabell Hunter. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? On the boys side the newcomers who will have an impact will be Reece Baron, Tanner Clark, Doug Hill, Joe Willson, Eli Fudge, Brendan Roberts and Brock Roy. On the girls side we are looking at newcomers Olivia Campbell and Shay Trump. Both of these runners had good success at Indian Springs Middle School. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? For the boys, the biggest challenge will be focusing at practices so that we can find the right mix for at least a regional appearance this year. For the girls, the challenge will be filling the shoes of Samina and Alissa Jagger. Post & Mail photo / Mark Parker Front row, from left: Bailie Brown, Shay Trump, Hannah Wappes, Olivia Campbell, Isabell Hunter and manager Jessica McFarland. Back: Head Coach Bob Fahl, Karina Rubrake, Natalia Johnson, Lauren Keller and Asst. Coach Ashley Cearbaugh. Harriers ready to race into new season Another challenge will be making the transition from the 3K race to a 5K race. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? Without a doubt, the team goals for the guys will be not to finish at the bottom in the new conference and to advance out of the sectional and set personal records doing it. Goals for the girls are set very high after making a great tournament run last year, but without Alissa each runner will really have to step it up. 6. Something interesting or unusual that you are seeing this year. This year there is great cooperation and effort every night at practice. The parents are all very supportive and positive on both teams. 7. What are the highlights or measuring stick games or meets on your schedule this year? The measuring stick will show up very quickly on the highly competitive Saturday invitationals. Both teams have high hopes of having successful seasons. Aug. 18 DeKalb Inv. 18 A18 August Fall Sports Preview Whitko Cross Country Bradley takes the reins of Whitko XC SOUTH WHITLEY Brandon Bradley, who takes over the reins of the Whitko cross country program as the new head coach, returns key runners on both the boys and girls teams. Bradley will look to fit several newcomers on the girls team into the mix. 1. Who are you biggest losses to graduation? The boys team graduated one runner in Jonathan Johnson. The girls team graduated two runners in Michelle Kelsey and Courtney Edwards. 2. Who are your key returning runners? The boys team returns a young nucleus of four runners, with Junior Josh Wright being the oldest. There is also a Sophomore trio back in Logan Busz, Collin Bross, and Ezra Miller. All four returnees are strong and steady runners, and there hasn t been a major gap in time between the four during our practice runs. The girls team returns just two runners, but both have multiple years of experience. Senior Brigit Nemitz is our most experienced and fastest runner, and she already has plans to run in college.junior Hanna Yohe has also run each year of high school, and she has improved a great deal since last season. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? The boys team has just one newcomer, freshman Zach Freel. He had a great deal of success at the middle school level and should adjust nicely to the high school team. The girls team will rely heavily on three newcomers to fill the void left by graduation. Freshman Lizz Foutz brings experience, having run at middle school level. 4. What will be the emphasis of your program this year? I think the biggest emphasis we are focusing on this season is the mental aspect of the sport. As they become tougher mentally, they will become better runners. Yes, there are team points awarded each race, but as each run takes place they are competing against the course and against their personal, individual limits. If they can push themselves to be the best they can be, there isn t much more that can be asked of them. 5. What poses the biggest need for you this year? The one thing we always talk about being important is making sure our three, four and five runners finish strong for a good team finish. You don t have to have the winner of the race to win the team standings, so we want to continue focusing on our depth and finishing strong as one unit. 8. What are the highlights or measuring stick meets on your schedule this year? This isn t an easy one for me to know, being a first-year coach. However, we want to focus on our conference meet and the sectional meet as priorities. If we can continue to get stronger as the season goes on, then we want to challenge for those meets. 9. Any other comments I have been extremely pleased with the effort of our runners. We are pushing them very hard and they are responding nicely. 19 2015 Fall Sports Preview August 2015 A19 Churubusco Cross Country Graduation losses need replaced CHURUBUSCO The replacement of four key members of the Churubusco crosscountry teams lost to graduation will be a priority for Head Coach Kurt Hogeston. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? We lost two girls, Paige Long and Darby Allen and two boys, Ty Backman and Blake Gross that were very important. All four were key contributors to the team on the course, during practice and in the areas of team chemistry and camaraderie. 2. Who are your key returning players? On the boy s side, we have Reed Geiger, Jacob Eyer and Trey Springer. For the ladies team, Julia Folland returns. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? We have two freshman that are showing promise Jamie Zeigler and Bradlee Kolvoord. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? Everyone needs to step up their effort to replace the four runners that graduated. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? We will emphasize getting faster, stronger and being more competitive. 6. Something interesting Go! Eagles! Go! or unusual that you are seeing this year. The team seems to be enjoying the hard workouts more than last year which qualifies as both interesting and unusual. 7. What are the highlights or measuring stick games or meets on your schedule this year? Two meets that immediately come to mind are the Wildcat Classic at Indiana Wesleyan, a large meet with a fast course and the NECC conference meet. 8. Any other comments. She is a senior playing as a defensive midfielder. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? Sam Law is back with us for her junior year after tearing her ACL her freshman year, and we are so excited for her to be back in goal. We are anticipating great things from her this season. Grace Cotter is a freshman who we anticipate to have a tremendous impact on the team this season. We look for her to really spark the offensive side of our team. 4. Second row: Brandon Davidson, Matt Hartley, Drew Diamente, Colin Wood, Zach Baker, Jesus Gil, Ian Cook, Frank Planchon and Matt Wright. Third COLUMBIA CITY Columbia City boys soccer Head Coach Derick Rice hopes to use the enthusiasm of a large freshman class and the experience of a few returning players to help the Eagles get through the first several matches until those freshmen can gain varsity experience. 1. Who are your biggest losses to graduation? Our biggest loss is Drake DeWitt. Everything we did in the attack moved through Drake. Jordan Gregory is another who will be missed. He had heart and drive to do whatever necessary to score. Jordan Lahr was a staple in the goal for the past three years, so we will miss him back there. 2. Who are your key returning players? With Jordan Lahr gone, we look to Chase Johnson, our backup goalie, to step up huge this year. He has grown tremendously since last year and we are very excited to see what he brings to the table this year. Frank Planchon will be our work horse in the attack. Post & Mail photo / Mark Parker row: Jeremy Barrus, Dillon Potts, Davis Snyder, Logan Bachelder, Cole Straub, Evan Gates, Jacob Dittmer, Chase Clifford and Dakota Hoover. Back row: Head Coach Derick Rice, Ian Rhodes, Ryan Jordan, Chase Johnson, Evan Straub, River Sheare, Cesare Barbera and Cory Behm. Columbia City boys soccer boasts large freshman class A small piece in our puzzle last year, he will be counted on many times this year to get us going offensively. Evan Gates will again be a key player for us on defense and Jacob Dittmer will be our go-to man to find the back of the net. 3. Who are newcomers that will have an impact on your program? This year we bring in a huge freshman class and many of them will be key players this year. Colin Wood is a fantastic soccer player with amazing pure soccer talent. He has an incredible work ethic and great vision and feel for the game. He will be a big part of our future, as well as how successful the team is this year. Ryan Jordan is another newcomer who will make his name known on the defensive end of the field. Cole Meyer and Dominick Planchon are two other freshmen with incredible talent. 4. What is the biggest challenge to your team s success this year? Youth and inexperience at the varsity level will be our weakness this year. Many of our freshmen will spend time at the varsity level this year, which after a few games, could work out really well for us. 5. What will be the emphasis to your program this year? Keeping possession of the ball during the game, and most importantly on the attack, is our biggest emphasis. It is a simple concept but one that is very hard to do. If we can keep possession of the ball more than 60 percent of the game, we stand a higher chance of winning. We also have been talking with our guys about playing for the full 80 minutes. We may not come out the victor in every game this year, but we will take it to the last minute if needed. As coaches, we believe we have a talented group, so we will make every team work to beat us. Nothing will be easy. 6. What position poses the biggest need for you this year? Our biggest need this year will be on the defensive line. Though we Aug. 15 E. Something interesting or unusual that you are seeing this year: It may sound odd but a rejuvenated love for the game has sprung back up in Columbia City that hasn t been here for a couple years. The past few years it has slowly grown but this year could be something special. We have 32 talented young men who are eager and ready to push their potential to its max. 8. What are the highlights or measuring stick matches on your schedule this year? The coaching staff and myself see all games as measuring sticks with such a young and raw team, but the games we have circled on the schedule to see how far we have come are Marion on Aug. 24, DeKalb on Sept. 8 and Leo on Sept. 28. These three games will really help us as coaches gauge how far the team has come throughout the year.
