St Austell RFC Youth Rugby Coaches, TM s and Volunteers Brief 5 th September 2017 Andy Rice / Ian Grantham
Introduction Tonight we will cover: Roles Regulation 15 Code of Conducts Empowerment Qualifications Safeguarding Player and Coach Development The Club incl. the grounds Getting more people involved (sub-committee) The Gym Kit/Kit Stores One Club Ethos PR Drinks Andy
Volunteers Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. Elizabeth Andrew (Author and Commentator) Andy We know you are all volunteers with busy lives outside the club We appreciate what you give and know we are lucky you are giving it to us We want you to enjoy volunteering for St Austell Rugby Club And this brief is designed to make it easier for you to volunteer!
Roles We recognise the following Volunteer Roles Coach Team Manager Parent Helper First Aider Referee Andy The roles must abide by the Coaches Code of Conduct we will cover later on. They must all have current DBS clearance
Regulation 15 Relates to youth rugby known as Age Grade rugby from U6 to U18. Applies to both genders up to and including U11s, then specific regulations apply to girls rugby for U12 to U18 Relates to training, matches and all variations of rugby permitted within the relevant age grade Supported by the Best Practice Guidance document Current Reg 15 is dated 1st August 2017 Andy Reg 15 is there to help you understand the rules applicable to your age grade, to ensure players and volunteers are kept safe and happy
Regulation 15 Where to Find It It is available on the England Rugby Website from the front page via Governance then RFU Regulations where every Regulation they have is listed. Andy It is also available on our club website under the Documents Tab along with other important and helpful items - Governance RFU Regulations - Information - Documents
Code of Conduct[s] We have: Andy Coaches Code of Conduct Players Code of Conduct Parents Code of Conduct All are stored in the document section on the Club Website. They have all been reviewed and approved for the 2017/18 season. There is also a Dealing with Challenging Behaviour advice sheet.
Empowerment 7 things you need to know and remember: Ian 1. Fun and Player Safety is our No.1 aim at all times; 2. Don t be afraid to ask for ideas or guidance; 3. We trust you You are part of our team; 4. You are empowered [and we expect you] to make decisions on behalf of your players and the club; 5. You have Reg. 15 and the Codes of Conduct to guide you; 6. We will back you 100% if you make a decision based on items in 1 and 5; 7. *Be brave, communicate clearly and follow your intuition It's not always clear cut or easy. *You have support from the Club, Youth Committee, and Player/Coach Development Officer (Dave Clark) at all times
Courses The training provided by England Rugby Cornish Reps is very good! Ian There are courses available in: Coaching; First Aid; Leadership and Management; Refereeing; Safeguarding; Volunteering;
Qualifications England Rugby Coaching Award (Level 2) Ian The course is 150 and is 3 days in one month There is financial help available from the CRFU (See Andy Seaton) Stop Press Referee Course!
Qualifications Moving forwards we would like all our Coaches, Team Managers and First Aiders to have completed the Play it Safe Safeguarding Course*. Ian It's one evening for around 2.5 hours. It's an eye-opener and interactive so not boring! Ann Demaine is running a Play it Safe Course on Wednesday 11 th October at the club. Please book online via the England Rugby website *Each age grade should have at least one person who has completed this course at the start of the season.
Continuous Personal Development (CPD) Short low cost courses (some are 2-3 hours and cost 5-15 approx) Here s a selection: CPD Kids U7/U8 Tag Rugby; CPD U9-U13 Rugby; CPD Coaching 7-a-side; CPD Rugby Smart; RFU Level 1/2 Strength and Conditioning; CPD Scrum Factory (U9 s and up); Head Case (Online, free and we d like to make this a must have ). Ian
Safeguarding Safeguarding is about player s welfare and wellbeing. Linda Caroline Connolly manages the Child Welfare Team Safeguarding is not limited to Caroline, Sha Rice, Lesley Bennett, Jenny Tyrrell, Linda Ranger, Claire Louise Hunt and Clair Grantham. Everybody s business, Everybody s concern, Everybody s responsibility
Safeguarding Linda Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play in safeguarding children. School and college staff are particularly important as they are in a position to identify concerns early and provide help for children and young people, to prevent concerns from escalating This is from the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education and is equally applicable to your role in the Youth Section at St Austell RFC
Safeguarding Linda As part of those safeguarding responsibilities the RFU expect you to act as a role model and never put yourself in a position through your behaviour and conduct that would lead a reasonable person to question your actions and attitudes. Don't find yourselves in a vulnerable position that leaves you open to accusations or taking advantage of the balance of power in your favour; Raise your own awareness in order to keep both players and coaches safe.
Safeguarding Linda Things to do asap: Read the RFU Safeguarding Policy - Guidance and Procedures available on englandrugby.com. Over the season look for changes in a player; Ideally attend the Play it Safe course being held here on Wednesday 11th October; Read and sign the Coaches Code of Conduct Advise Parents of their Code of Conduct
Player and Coach Development David Clark Coached Youth and Adults in both male and female game; With RFUW coached Club, County and Divisional sides; Member Leadership Academy (nice tee shirt); Currently South West manager/co-ordinator for Scottish Exiles; Carried out Coach mentoring and disability training as well as child protection and safeguarding. Also qualified as FA level one and Rugby league L2 coach.
The Club Aside from our players this is our most valuable asset! Andy Great turnout on the Nat West Force Day (49!) Look after our club Carpets Tell all players and Parents to remove muddy footwear Wash hands after a game food and walls Brief the visiting Coaches, Parents and Players Use our club The club needs your support at lunches/home games/functions etc
The Grounds Training areas to be organised in advance by Rugby Committee/ Youth Committee (This will not be up to coaches on the night except in exceptional circumstances); Andy We need greater communication from coaches in use of scrum machine, Line out area, use of ruck pads (grabbing at start of night for something later is unfair to other groups who may wish to use them. Coaches should have a coaching plan so should have an idea of what when and where they would like to be); Try to avoid excessive wear in one place; Proactive booking of a 3G will be made from Dec Feb 18.
Sub-Commitee We have around 500 Parents involved via their Children playing rugby! Ian We want a Youth Rugby Ents Sub-Committee to form: 4-6 participants with a Chair/Vice Chair; One task organise a Christmas function for younger age groups; After that they can decide if they want to organise something else (perhaps look at the end of season awards nights); Simple, non-onerous, options to bale after one but we hope they enjoy it and carry on!
Saints Gym Saints Gym now focusing on supplying courses/sessions to suit Older Youth Players and Coaches/Volunteers Ian They get player membership so the costs for courses are very low or free; Talk to James Earp or Ian Grantham about what you would like to see happening or what you need; Push the gym concept if chance arises (not enough know about it); It's on our doorstep, Lets use it if we can!
Kit/Kit stores The Tackle Bag/pad store needs to be managed better by all coaches using kit from there! Don t just throw bags in there. Stack them upright to either side of the container to leave a channel in the middle; If they are wet its even more important to stack them standing up so they can dry; We extend the life of them if they are stored correctly and it prevents people wearing studs from climbing over them for cleaner items at the back! Andy
One Club Ethos St Austell believes in and promotes a One Club ethos Steve This translates into treating every volunteer, every player, every member of the bar staff (everyone!) with the same importance, the same reverence and the same respect.
PR (Or Getting the Word Out) It is the Clubs ambition to grow the brand of St Austell Rugby Club: So we attract more Youth Players So we attract more spectators So we attract more volunteers So we attract more positive media attention So we sell more Pre-Match Lunches (which fund kit/minibuses etc.) So we host more functions (which help keep the club in the black) So we are the most highly thought of rugby supplier in Mid-Cornwall Ian
PR (Or Getting the Word Out) Your Club PR Officers are: Ian Grantham Mark Lawther Contact them for advice on anything to do with club communications! There are advice papers available on writing articles, doing radio interviews and match reports. You are all part of the PR machine! Club
Drinks That s it Team! Andy Please stick around and get to know each other. Ensure you know the coaches one age group above you so you can ask for advice on new rules. Ensure you know coaches one age group below you so they know who to ask advice from!
