Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, RCPI & RCSI Dear Delegates, Following on from our very successful SEMSEP 2017/2018 programme, On behalf of the Faculty Board, I would like to welcome you to the Royal College of Surgeons today for the first Module in our Sports and Exercise Medicine Structured Educational Programme (SEMSEP) 2018/2019. The objective of the SEMSEP programme is to provide additional educational opportunities in the new specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine to our Fellows and Members, but also to medical practitioners and other allied healthcare professionals who are interested to learn more about Sports and Exercise Medicine. The modules will be delivered during the academic year, and will address a number of relevant topics. Today s module, the first of this academic year, will be dedicated to On Field Trauma. This will provide knowledge in the areas of diagnosis and emergency management of On Field Trauma. I hope this will be useful to all Fellows & Members and anyone involved in healthcare in sport. This will also feature the launch of our new FSEM Trauma Course and I hope that this will be significantly supported and provide a worthwhile resource going forwards. I hope everyone will enjoy today s module and I would like to thank you again for supporting the Faculty and we look forward to your continued support in the future. 4 Speakers Biographies DR MICK MOLLOY (FSEM VICE DEAN) MFSEM(UK) FRCEM FFSEM MSc Dip SpMed Dr Molloy is a Consultant Emergency Physician at Wexford General Hospital and Disaster Medicine Specialist and Research Director at the Beth Israel Deaconess Fellowship in Disaster Medicine based in Boston, Massachusetts. A former medical officer with Connacht Men s Rugby and Leinster Ladies having previously played Rugby union for Gorey, Old Belvedere and UCD while an undergraduate, and Rugby League for Dublin Blues, Leinster and Ireland. Dr Molloy has served as Medical officer at two Rugby league World Cups and as Chairman of Rugby League Ireland for 6 years. Dr Molloy coaches underage Rugby union at Old Belvedere and takes a keen interest in under age player welfare and injury prevention/health promotion. He provides ringside medical cover at professional boxing and mixed martial arts in Ireland and has been appointed by two Ministers for Health to the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council responsible for setting the standards for pre-hospital care in Ireland. PROF JOHN M RYAN FRCEM, FRCSEd(A&E), FFSEM, DCH, DipSportsMed Prof Ryan qualified from RCSI in He passed the FRCSEd (A&E) and the Diploma in Sports Medicine exam from Dublin University in He completed his Higher Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine in London, Brighton and Sydney. He was a Senior Lecturer in Brighton for five years before returning to St Vincent s University Hospital. He has been a board member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine. He has published many papers and book chapters on Sports Medicine related topics. His particular area of interest is in Acute Sports Injury Management and Research. For the last 4 years he has run a public concussion clinic at St Vincent s University Hospital. He is team doctor with Leinster Rugby and doctor to the Irish Under 18s Rugby Team. DR CIARAN COSGRAVE Dr Cosgrave trained as a consultant in Sports & Exercise Medicine in Liverpool. He currently works in Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC), Sports Medicine and is the Team Doctor to the Irish Senior Rugby Team. He has a wealth of experience in elite sport having worked for two seasons at Liverpool Football Club from and as the Lead Doctor at Leinster Rugby from He also provided medical cover at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and subsequently accompanied Team GB at their High Altitude Training Camp in Iten, Kenya. Other experience in elite sport includes basketball, Northern Ireland Football, athletics, karate and judo. In each of these sports he not only provides high quality sports medicine but also works closely with athletes and coaches on performance enhancement. Dr Cosgrave graduated Medicine from Queen s University Belfast in 2004 and after working for a year in Sydney, undertook an MSc in Sports & Exercise Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. Additionally he has qualifications in Sports Psychology and Medical Education. He has a particular interest in concussion and is the lead investigator for a study being conducted at SSC into the effects of concussion on adolescent rugby players. MR CLIFF BEIRNE FFD RCSI, FRCS ED, FFSEM Mr Beirne is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) based mainly at the Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC) in Santry. Previously he was a Consultant in The John Radcliffe Hospital

5 Oxford and Beaumont and St James s. He is a former International Tennis player, playing ATP Satellite Tournaments as a Medical Student, also playing under age Gaelic Football in St Vincent s and Soccer in Home Farm. He served as the Training Programme Director in OMFS and was the RCSI Representative on the Specialist Advisory Committee in OMFS. A keen advocate on player welfare issues in Sport, as a member of the Medical Scientific and Welfare Committee of the GAA he launched the compulsory use of Faceguards and Helmets in Hurling in 2009 for the GAA and spoke to the GAA Annual Congress in 2012 proposing the successful motion on introducing compulsory Mouthguards in Gaelic Football. Formally involved with the IRFU for 20 years, he currently chairs the Care Sub-committee of the IRFU Charitable Trust. Recently he has been a Medical Advisor to Monkstown Hockey Club and is a member of the Concussion Research Group at the Sports Surgery Clinic. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, RCPI & RCSI. DR ROD MCLOUGHLIN, IRFU Medical Director Dr McLoughlin Graduated from UCD 1984 and then completed General Practice and Sports Medicine Training. He has worked as a Sports & Exercise Medicine Physician at O Neills Sports Medicine Clinic, have been Medical Officer to Wicklow Intercounty Gaelic Football ( ) and Monkstown Rugby Club ( ). Dr McLoughlin also has been board member, Chair of the Accreditation Committee and Treasurer of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine, member of the GAA Medical & Scientific Committee and Past President of the Irish Sports Medicine Association. He was The Olympic Medical Officer for the Beijing, London and Rio Olympics and Director of Performance Medicine at The Irish Institute of Sport Currently, he is the Medical Director at the IRFU and a member of the 6 Nations and European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) medical subcommittees. He lectures on a BSc course in Sports Management, at University College Dublin. MR COLM FULLER Colm Fuller is the IRFU National Team Lead Physiotherapist and also works as a lead physiotherapist at Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC), Sports Medicine in Santry, Dublin. He is currently enrolled in UCC studying a PhD under the supervision of Dr. Eanna Falvey, UCC and Professor Kathryn Schneider, University of Calgary, investigating the role of neck strength in concussion rehabilitation. He has previously worked in professional rugby with Munster and London Irish. He completed his Masters in UQ, Australia where he initially developed an interest in neck rehabilitation. DR JENNIFER PUGH Dr Jennifer Pugh is a GP practicing in Clane, Co Kildare. She has been involved in Horse racing in various guises for all of her life. She held a Qualified Riders Licence for 12 years and rode with some success, becoming Irish Lady Point to Point Champion in She has been working as Medical Officer at Point to Point meetings for 14 years and for the last six years has been a Medical Officer with the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board. She has just been appointed as Senior Medical Officer for the IRHB and is due to commence this role in January She has a keen interest in pre-hospital trauma care and is involved with PHECC as a Guidance validation framework assessor.

6 ETHICAL GUIDE IN SPORTS AND EXERCISE MEDICINE The Medical Council approached all postgraduate training bodies in the past 18 months regarding the development of a specialty-specific ethical guide for their own specialties. The aim is that these guidelines will complement the current Medical Council Ethical Guidelines, as well as provide additional guidance for medical practitioners in their relevant specialty. This project was lead by Dr Conor O Brien, in collaboration with Dr Ciaran Cosgrave and Dr Loretta Nolan, as well as representatives from Sport Ireland and FSEM UK.
