Welcome to 2017 Welcome back to our Bombers of 2016 and a very warm welcome to all the new families joining us for the first time this season will again see over 200 Bombers running out onto the field. The club will be entering teams in the following age groups - u17, u14, u12, u11, with two teams each in the u10s and u9s ages. Of course, we have our great numbers in the Auskick squads to look after our younger players. Our numbers are so strong we have had to lock off almost all age groups a month out to ensure we are not playing with oversize benches and have a better experience for our players. Over the off season our committee and redevelopment Committee have re organised our new and old clubhouses to get ready for the season so we will start to see the full benefits of our new clubhouse in 2017, more space, a better canteen, better spectator facilities; the list goes on. My personal thanks goes to all the committee who have continued to work tirelessly during the off season. Our biggest challenge early in the season will be ground availability. Waratah is close to finalisation with the latest update from council (who will have the final say on usage), that if the right weather conditions prevail in March/April, we may have use of the ground for games in May. This date is still not confirmed. In the meantime, we are truly grateful for everyone s patience and cooperation in dealing with any inconvenience associated with the necessity of alternative training venues due to the current unavailability of our ground. Once we get Waratah back we will be enjoying the best AFL facilities in the south of Sydney. I would like to acknowledge our sponsors, most notably Tradies who have provided us with significant funds towards the building of a scoreboard at the ground in addition to putting up their normal year to year sponsorship of the Club, for which we are very grateful. Please think of supporting our sponsors. I would also like to acknowledge the Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres and Member for Heathcote Lee Evans whose offices have generously granted towards the installation of a roller door at the Club house over summer which will protect the clubhouse from any property damage and additional funds to fit out the canteen. We are still seeking some volunteers to fill some vacant roles on our committee and importantly, we always are on the look-out for new parents to be involved as Coaches and Managers in Auskick particularly. Please contact any member of the committee if you are able to assist, no offer, however small will be rejected. If you would like to help, just ask; many hands make light work. On the field, we will continue to focus on the club values RESPECT, ENJOYMENT, FAIRNESS - to make sure, above all else, that our players enjoy being part of AFL. We have a dedicated team of Coaches and Managers to support your sons and daughters so, please offer your support to them during the season. Go Bombers in I look forward to seeing you during the season. Andrew Briggs President

These roles need to be filled each week (some roles only at home games) include: Coach Assistant Coach (if appointed by the Coach) Team Manager Runner Trainer Water Runner Minimum Age for Under 9 s game 12 yo Minimum Age for Under 10 s game 12 yo Minimum Age for Under 11 s game 12 yo Minimum Age for Under 12 s game 12 yo Minimum Age for Under 13 s - 17 s games 13 yo Goal Umpire Boundary Umpire (U13 to U17, i.e. full field games) Ground Manager (1 per team playing for the duration of the game only) Time Keeper The Coach coaches the team in accordance with the requirements as set out in the AFL SJ By Laws, and all coaches must wear approved identification (supplied by the club) during the game; The Team Manager Prepares team sheets; Ensures Ground Manager, Time keeper is in place for home games Your contact point for Team Roster/disseminate information to team; Communicate any game changes/wet weather information to teams; Provides team trophy each week; Hands umpire monies at homes games to umpires Provides team information to the club newsletter the Bombshell after each game; and Liases with the club committee. The Team Manager must also wear identification at all times (supplied by the Club). NOTE; Some home games may be played away at neutral ovals away from the Miranda home ground of Waratah Oval. In this instance, when Miranda is listed as the Home Team by virtue of being listed first on Footyweb, it will be the responsibility of our team to provide Ground Manager, First Aid and a timekeeper.
First Aid volunteers are trained by the committee at the start of each year to take on this role.
Game Day Duty Roster Each family will be allocated one Sunday during the season per registered player that they will have responsibility for the fulfilling a role to help run home games. These roles include ground set up, operating and service at the BBQ and canteen. This means if you have two children playing, there will be two rostered shifts during the season for your family. Miranda AFC has a policy of rostering people as close as possible to their child s game time so that inconvenience is reduced. Ground set up is normally allocated to Auskick parents as they are the first game at home. A checklist of the activities required to set up the ground is available at the clubhouse, and this activity will be directed by the Football Manager or a delegate. The line marking is also performed by the Football Manager on the day before (ie Saturday) Sunday home games. Once the ground is set up, parents/carers are rostered for BBQ and canteen duty and pack up at the completion of the last game. The Committee will allocate the positions on the roster, generally 2-2 ½ hours per person for each team your children are involved with. We will have the whole season s roster prepared within 7 days of the final draw being released by the AFL Regional Committee. This roster is applicable for all teams from Auskick through to Under 17. If you are unable to do your allocated roster, it is your responsibility to swap with someone within your team and advise the club (rosters@mirandabombers.org) of the swap. An reminder will be sent out to all parents for each home game roster in the week leading up to game day by the roster officer. Please respond to this with confirmation you are aware and will attend for your roster. If you do swap with someone else within your team, please reply to that and inform the Rosters Officer who you will be swapping with. It is important that you perform your roster during the season. Remember it is only a short commitment during the whole season and is for the benefit of your child s playing experience. Many hands make light work.

Game Day Ground Manager For home games, this position will be filled by a parent from the playing team. Team managers should assign a parent to perform this task, and ensure they know and understand their role. When there are multiple games being played simultaneously, the team managers will confer and appoint a Ground Manager. Duties include:- To ensure all equipment (including first aid and a stretcher) for conducting the game is available before the game. The ground is safe and ready to play on, to ensure the ground is set-up through the day including the movement and placement of goal posts and padding and the interchange area. Making sure games run to schedule and liaise with visiting clubs BBQ and canteen are manned. Ensuring a copy of the Rules and a copy of the Laws are available for all games Receiving any formally submitted objections, protests or complaints from Officials of Clubs. Must wear a distinctive vest with the title Ground Manager printed on the back so as to be easily identified. Provide water for the Field Umpires at each break. To accompany the Umpires on and off the ground To collect all required paper work, including team sheets, scorecards, Umpire documentation. Ensure Umpires review both team sheets for inclusion of all jumper numbers and then sign the sheets. Both Clubs are to retain both home and away team sheets plus appropriate score cards. The Ground manager is to retain the umpire team sheets. To check completion of Umpire paperwork and ensure it is completed correctly. To organise payment to Field Umpires. To ensure that both teams are aware of where the interchange area is. If necessary, ensure that the Field Umpire is aware that a stretcher is needed on the field. The Umpire shall then stop play at the first opportunity. The Ground Manager should also ensure that a phone is available to call an ambulance if required. In the event of a possible serious injury (e.g. neck), the Ground Manager will dissuade any football Official from moving the injured Player and to wait for an ambulance. The game will not continue until qualified medical personnel have
removed the Player from the field. If the playing time of the game is greater than two (2) quarters, then the final scores will be taken as that at the scheduled FINISH TIME. If the playing time is less than two (2) quarters and if the coaches cannot agree on final scores and a winner the game will be postponed and rescheduled if possible. In the event of dangerous weather (e.g. lightning or hail) or other life threatening events, the Ground Manager will terminate the game. If the playing time of the game is greater than two (2) quarters, then the final scores will be taken as that at the scheduled FINISH TIME. If the playing time is less than two (2) quarters and if the coaches cannot agree on a final scores and a winner the game will be postponed and rescheduled if possible. To receive any reports from the Field Umpires and notify the Regional Committee of the reported Players by no later than 6pm on game day. To keep a check on the behaviour of all Officials and supporters and to issue warnings for any misconduct or behaviour that is contrary to the spirit of the game. This process should be completed by Officials of the Club involved after the Ground Manager has advised an Official of the offending Club. It is not the intent that a Ground Manager should be confrontational or assume direct responsibility for behaviour management. In the event that an offence is deemed reportable, the Ground Manager must obtain signed statements from witnesses and video footage if possible. Such reports must be substantiated in this manner. Ensure coaches have their identification bib on match day. Playing Times Teams will be issued with a draw near the beginning of the season that will include playing locations and times. Parents are also encouraged to check on Footy Web for venue, playing times etc as these are subject to change. Team managers will be kept informed of any changes to playing times etc. Bombers Playing Jumpers Playing jumpers are provided to each player at the beginning of the season at the Jumper Presentation. These are to be held for the season. It is the players responsibility to ensure that the jumpers are worn on game day. These jumpers are the property of the Miranda Bombers and must be returned to your Manager at the end of the season. Most teams have an individual sponsor on their jumpers and we ask that you support these organisations where you can, for without their generous support we would not have such great jumpers. NOTE: Playing jumpers must not be worn at training.
The Club also runs a Boot Box, so if you have out grown a pair of boots you can donate them to the box and take another pair your size. Alternatively if you need a pair from the box you can make a $5.00 donation to the Club.
Team Selection These are generally done on the basis of age as at 31 Dec to determine the grade level, and then on the basis of keeping friends together where two teams exist in the same age group. Our policy is to have mixed ability teams for a more even and fairer competition. All team selections are approved by the executive committee and any concerns regarding team selections should be directed to the committee. The AFL has a policy of seeking ongoing registrations of players throughout the course of each year. This may often place pressure on numbers in terms of whether there are too many players for one team, depending on the age group and number required, there may be too many players on a bench. The policy of the Club is to, as far as is reasonably practicable, accommodate all players who seek to play for the Club, at any time. In the event there are too many players for one team, all attempts will be made to accommodate the new registrations. Firstly, efforts must be made to accommodate the players in the first team with rotating interchange. If numbers are too large, efforts must be made to create a second team by splitting minimum numbers if necessary. Other factors to consider are the numbers of other clubs in the same age group. Miranda Bombers seeks the co-operation, understanding and patience of parents in relation to team selections. Every year is different in terms of player registration numbers, mix of age groups and number of teams from other clubs. Miranda Bombers will always strive to maximise the benefit for players, and that is our first priority. Selection and performance of Coaches Coaches for each team are selected and approved by the Committee at the start of each season. All coaches agree to be bound by the AFL Code of Conduct for coaches. It is the policy of the Club that all coaches must strive to ensure that all players gain equal playing time, within reasonable bounds, taking into account injuries, rotations and game day factors. Coaches should avoid overplaying the talented players, aiming to maximise participation, learning and enjoyment for all players regardless of ability. Auskick The Auskick program is designed for children 8 and under, and seeks to introduce them to the game in a fun and non-competitive manner. The players have about 25 minutes of skill drills followed by a 25 minute game against other clubs. There is no premiership competition, and the rules are modified to encourage the development of individual and team skills.
All Mums and Dads are urged to help out, as the spirit is one of backyard family footy: i.e., everyone gets a kick. Training Training nights will be conducted on a night determined by each teams coach at the start of each season. Competition Age Range Where player numbers do not permit conducting a competition in every age group, in accordance with AFL policy, teams will be made up based on a two year age span e.g staggered age groups eg 9,11,13 or 8,10,12. If numbers are too many for one team, all attempts will be made to rotate players off interchange to ensure equal participation. Female Participation The Club welcomes and seeks to promote female participation. For girls aged 5yo to 8yo, they are entitled to play Auskick which is mixed gender. After Auskick, the policy of the club supports, adopts and adheres to s. 42(1) of the Sex Discrimination Act whereby people aged under 12 cannot be excluded from sport on the basis of sex or gender identity from participating in a competitive sporting activity. Therefore, the Club actively encourages female participation up to U11 in mixed gender competition. Pursuant to s.42(1) of the Act, people of one gender aged 12 and over can be excluded from participating in competitive sporting activities in which strength, stamina and physique of competitors is relevant. As a result, it is the policy of the Club to encourage girls that have turned 12 to play in the Southern Power U14 Girls team. To the extent a female participant wishes to play in U12 or U13 mixed gender competitions, special consideration will be given to any such request by a female player and their parent or guardian having regard to the player s strength, stamina and physique. Please note that the club adopts and adheres to AFL policy that any female player who reaches the age of 14 years of age as at 1 January in the year of play is excluded from playing in any competition that is not a female competition. A female competition is defined in the Act as a competition in which the majority of the players are female.
Children with Disabilities The Club adopts the AFL Disability Action Plan and supports the notion that every child has the right to be involved in sport, especially a sport such as Australian Rules Football. Participation will take place following consultation with the child and their parent and after assessing the needs and abilities of the child. Any adjustments or modifications may be made to enable participation in activities. Playing up a level A parent is to be the ultimate decision maker as to whether a player should play in a higher age competition than one determined by chronological age. Players should only be permitted to play up an age level when their physical capacity and social sense enable them to compete adequately at the higher age level. The decision on whether to play up should be based on the advantages to be gained by the player subject and any final decision is subject to approval by the Coach and Club committee. Playing down a level The club may at its discretion grant a player permission to play down an age level where a legitimate reason exists such as physical capacity or disability. This may require approval from the controlling body depending on the circumstances of the request. Jumper Number Allocation A jumper number to an AFL player is a very important issue, and the club policy in relation to issuing numbers is: 1. If a returning player desires, he/she may retain his/her number from the previous year. 2. Where 2 returning players had the same number the previous year, the player with the highest number of games played has the first option to retain that number; the other player then selects a free number.
3. If a returning player desires, he/she may select a free number. This selection is based on seniority; i.e. the player with the higher number of games played has first option and so on. 4. New players to the team may select a free number after points 1, 2 & 3 above have been completed; or be allocated a number based on a size jumper that will suit the player. Miranda AFC attempts to fulfil all requests for desired jumper numbers, but we only have a finite supply of jumpers in combinations of size and jumper number, so in some cases requests cannot be fulfilled. Team Captain Under 9 Under 12. At the commencement of the season, the team should vote for a captain. The player with the highest number of votes should be named captain, the player with the next highest number of votes should be named the vice-captain. Under At the commencement of the season, the team should vote for a leadership group. The team first is to vote whether there be three co-captains, or a captain and 2 vice captains. Should the decision be three co-captains, the team should vote for three players; the three players with the highest number of votes should be named cocaptains. Should the decision be Captain and 2 vice captains, the team should vote for three players; the player with the highest number of votes should be named captain; the two players with the next highest number of votes should be named vice captains. Club Captain. Players in the Under 17 age group who have been registered with Miranda Australian Football Club for a period of at least five years are eligible to be selected as Club Captain. The Executive may interview those eligible players and will appoint the Club Captain. The club captain will be expected to attend the Jumper Presentation, Presentation Day and other events as requested by the Executive Committee. The Rules of The Game
The AFL supply a full rule book and this can be viewed at the Timekeepers desk. Should you require a copy, please see your Manager or alternatively a copy is available on the Greater Sydney Juniors website: 0&sID=55001&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID= Under 9s, to 12s Essentially in these age groups the rules are modified, tackling is limited in extent, and players are restricted in how many bounces of the ball they may make before disposal is required. The purpose of the modified rules is to encourage skill development and prevent better players from dominating the play. The size of the field and ball is also modified. Under 13s and 17s These grades play under the full rules of senior AFL. Club Purpose, Values and Rules The Purpose of the Miranda Bombers is to provide a quality AFL experience to families from all backgrounds and to foster a lifelong love of the game The Values of the Miranda Bombers are: RESPECT ENJOYMENT FAIRNESS CLUB RULES All coaching staff, administrators, players, parents and supporters shall at all times observe the AFL Sydney Juniors Code of Conduct. This is published on the AFL Sydney Juniors website and forms part of the AFL SJ By-Laws. All players, parents and supporters shall at all times participate in the spirit of the game. All players, parents and supporters shall at all times treat all officials and umpires with respect. No kicking, handballing, bouncing, throwing, passing of balls in the Clubhouse. No swearing, either directly at a person or yourself. No spitting. Breaching these rules may result in a suspension from the team, and continual offenders may be asked to leave the Club permanently. Safety The Bike Track a cycle track exists around the perimeter of our ground and there have been accidents in the past. Waratah Oval is a shared facility with cyclists and the club takes our responsibilities seriously. The cycling club will often use the track
for training and events, and have usage rights and players and parents/spectators must not use the track when cyclists are present. Please make sure that your child is accompanied by an adult across this track when arriving at or leaving training or on game day. Players are not permitted anywhere near the track, except for the purpose of arrival or departure. Please be vigilant with your children who may wander off when spectating at their sibling s game. Accidents/First Aid A qualified First Aid official will be assigned to be present for all home games. It is the responsibility of the home club to ensure there is a qualified First Aid official assigned and available for all games. During away games, coaches and managers should make themselves familiar with the location and identity of the assigned First Aid official. The AFL has specific requirements relating to first aid and to the responsibilities of the host club, see section 19 of the By Laws.
If an incident arises on the field only the trainer is permitted to attend to an injury in the first instance. Whilst it may be distressing if your child is injured please allow the trainer to do their job, only this person has the right to ask the umpire to stop the game if the player is in danger of further injury or if further medical assistance is required. The First Aid Official will attend to any further First Aid needs. There is a stretcher and a first aid box located at the timekeeper s desk and there will be a qualified First Aid Official at each game in accordance with AFL NSW requirements. Each team is also provided with a first aid kit in a backpack. Supplies of first aid consumables are available in the gear room of the clubhouse. Insurance Claim Forms Should you need to claim insurance through our JLT coverage, forms are available on line at Ground Set Up Auskick 30 mins prior to start time assistance is required setting up drills, goal posts and boundary markers for games. The Auskick Co-ordinator will guide set-up. Under 9s - Under 17s; The Football Manager or their delegate will guide set up, based on the combinations of games on home game day. Templates for field set up combinations are provided to the Football Manager or their delegate to assist in efficient set up and take down of field equipment. The Coach and Manager do not assist in ground set-up. Game Day If a player cannot make it to a game, the Coach and Manager should be informed by Saturday evening. Players should arrive as directed by their coach. This is to give ample time for signing on, warm ups, Coach s address, positioning on the field and organising Parental Team Structure roles. Individual Coaches will usually specify their own expectations. If you are late, the Coach may well have asked players from a lower age group to play up to make up numbers. These players are part of the team for the day, and you will have to share game time with them. You may also be asked to start Off the Bench. Players should prepare for their game by bringing your kit (jumper, shorts, socks and boots), mouth guard, water bottle and a change of clothes if raining.

Wet Weather/Ground Closure The Football Manager will be the central contact point. They will SMS/contact the Team Managers and/or the Coaches if the ground is closed. The Team Manager and/or Coach will then contact all parents by their preferred contact method, phone call or SMS or , as previously advised to parents. A message will also be left on the club web site and Facebook page. The club has responsibility for ground closure only from Saturday morning to Sunday night. The Council has full responsibility concerning ground closure doing the week. The club will endeavour to give notice as soon as possible concerning any closures on the weekend however, weather conditions and the effect can be unpredictable so on occasions, notification may be given as late as the early morning prior to games. Parents should ensure their preferred mode of team communication(s) is available and is monitored if the weather looks doubtful. Intellectual Property The use and replication of the Miranda Bombers name, colours and logo is subject to the approval of the Executive Committee. Notice of intent to use one or all of these shall be provided in writing to the Executive Committee for discussion and approval.

Umpiring The interpretation and application of the laws of the game are applied by the Umpire in accordance with the spirit of the laws (the philosophies underlying the laws). A brochure outlining the Spirit of the Laws and the complete Laws of Australian Football is available from the Club President, or by visiting aflgsj.com.au. In the Under 9, 10, Under 11 and Under 12 grades, modifications to the Laws of the Game have been introduced to provide an opportunity for players of all abilities to compete equally. They are in addition to, or replace some of the Laws under which players from Under 13 upwards play. These modified rules are available by visiting aflgsj.com.au. Umpires in the Under 10 grade are usually experienced umpires as there is also a coaching role to be performed. For Under 11s the Umpires are at least in their second year of Umpiring. In the Under 12 grade the Umpires are First Year Umpires who are identified by wearing Green Shirts. They will usually be accompanied by an Umpiring Mentor whose role is to provide support, feedback to the Green Shirt Umpire at the breaks between quarters and if necessary to take control. During a game the Umpire is under constant pressure to be in the right position to make the right decision. The ability in making split-second decisions is very much based on the level of confidence of an Umpire. As is the case of players, Umpires do make mistakes, and in most cases will be aware that they ve made a mistake after they ve made the decision. This is to be expected from time to time but yelling out abuse toward the Umpire (particularly when it s a Junior Umpire) will only reduce their level of confidence and increase their level of nervousness. All parents please note: Abuse of Umpires will not be tolerated and any person doing so will be warned by the controlling Ground Manager. If the conduct continues, the person will be asked, and expected, to leave the ground. Abuse of Umpires is a breach of the Code of Conduct. Miranda Bombers takes this responsibility seriously and will act if required.
Constructive feedback from Coaches, Managers and Clubs are welcomed at all times. If a Coach, Manager, Parent or Spectator wants to comment about the performance of an Umpire any such comment should be made to the Regional Umpire Manager through their Club President. We do not expect that the feedback will always be positive but we do expect that it is balanced and delivered in a constructive way. It should be remembered that Umpire s often see the game from the opposite side of play from coaching staff and spectators. Never approach the Umpire after the game as quite often the message is lost in the emotion of the moment. Abuse toward an Umpire will not be tolerated by Miranda Bombers at any time. All feedback, both positive and negative can be directed firstly through your Coach/Team Manager who will forward this if necessary to the Club President for further action. People wishing to take on an Umpiring Role should contact the Umpire Manager from the AFL NSW. Representative Football Coaches and Assistant Coaches select players for representative try-outs training. Should your child be selected to represent Sydney South there is a fee applicable to cover the costs of uniform and umpires. The Club will subsidise 50% of the cost. Bombers Website The Bombers website will also provide information, copies of the Bombshell, important dates and photos. It also has links to other AFL sites and our sponsors. You can also Like Miranda Australian Football Club on Facebook and be instantly updated with the happenings of the club.
Child Protection At the time of registration, parents should have signed a consent form to allow their children s photos to appear on the website. If you do not wish to have your child s photos published on the website or have any concerns please see or contact the club s Child Protection Officer. NSW legislation and AFL NSW/ACT actively support child protection in the community. All coaching staff and managers are required to complete Working with Children declarations, so that persons must declare if they have been convicted of a child sex offence, or are considered unsuitable to work with children. In addition to this, abuse of any kind (verbal, physical, emotional) is not acceptable behaviour. Breaches of the Code of Conduct should be reported immediately and directly to the Child Protection Officer. First Aid AFL NSW/ACT policy requires that all teams have a First Aid Person allocated for each team. Each First aid person must have a suitable First Aid qualification. Details of the nominated First Aid person for each team must be communicated to the Club committee at start of each season. Good Sports Program The club has signed with the Australian Drug Foundation to form and promote responsible management of alcohol/drugs and other social issues that may affect our club. We are aiming to make our club safer and healthier to all our players, parents, families all our supporters. A detailed explanation of the program can be found at or
