2 ALAN BEATTIE HERRIOT DA ARBS I am a professional sculptor, having graduated from Duncan of Jordonstone College of Art in 1974, under the tuition of Scott Sutherland, author of the Commando Monument at Spean Bridge. My work is represented in private collections and on public display both in the UK and abroad. 3 INTRODUCTION Many of the statues I have created are on public display both in Britain and abroad. Several war memorials are prominent among them. The 51st Highland Division Piper at House of Bruar, Perthshire and the Durham Light Infantry Bugler at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire. Over the past thirty years, I have sculpted characters from history, legend and literature for some of the main heritage and conservation bodies, such as The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, as well as public organisations and private individuals. A major public work of art, my larger than life-size bronze equestrian statue of King Robert the Bruce is sited outside the Marischal College in the City of Aberdeen. In 2012 my life-size bronze of football legend Denis Law was sited at the Aberdeen Sports Village. My Ancient Mariner statue is sited on the Esplanade in the Somerset town of Watchet and in the summer of 2006, HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York unveiled my bronze statue of Bamse, the muchloved WWII Norwegian sea dog at Montrose. I was commissioned by The Watson-Watt Society of Brechin, to produce a bronze statue dedicated to Sir Robert Watson-Watt, pioneer of radar. I am working on an interesting sculpture of a brown bear called Wojtek, mascot to the Polish Army as a memorial acknowledging the role of Poland during WWII. 4 Durham Light Infantry Bugler National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire Commissioned by the Korean Veterans of the regiment, This statue depicts the regimental bugler wearing the uniform worn at the time of the Korean War. The life and one quarter size statue was unveiled by HRH Princess Alexandra at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire July 23rd

5 Denis Law This commemorative statue of football legend Denis Law was unveiled in his home city at the Aberdeen Sports Village on the 20th July

6 The Black Watch Memorial Polygon Wood, Flanders, Belgium The Black Watch Association commissioned this memorial statue to remember some 8,960 officers and men who lost their lives - and 20,000 wounded, during WWI. The statue stands at Polygon Wood known as Scots Corner and was unveiled in May

7 Knock an Crag An area of great geological interest these figures show Peach and Horn, the two Edwardian geologists who proved that the oldest rocks were actually visible at the surface and the younger rock strata lay below. These two figures, plus a modern depiction of a geologist form part of the display at the new ecologically friendly visitor centre north of Ullapool

8 King Robert the Bruce Aberdeen, Scotland KING ROBERT THE BRUCE Commissioned by the City of Aberdeen. This larger-than-life-size equestrian statue depicts the Bruce holding aloft the Charter of Aberdeen. His generosity towards the City was a demonstration of his gratitude for the help and shelter the citizens gave him during his struggle for the kingdom. Sited in the newly landscaped area outside The Marischal College, the statue was cast in bronze at the Powderhall Foundry, Edinburgh

9 King Robert the Bruce Aberdeen, Scotland These visuals show the location of the statue of King Robert the Bruce. The day-time visual shows the new landscaping work outside the building along with the new glassenclosed entrance arch. The night-time visual demonstrates the lighting specification and the spectacular effect on statue and building

10 The Miners Monument, Newtongrange, Scotland The monument is dedicated to all mine workers and sited in the recently re-landscaped village centre

11 The Horse and Figures Group, Loanhead, Scotland This sculpture was commissioned to mark the site of the Queen Victoria Jubilee fountain in Loanhead town centre 20 21

12 Broxburn and Uphall Combined Services Memorial Broxburn, Scotland Commissioned by the War Memorial Trust, the statue shows a WWII Royal Scot in full battle kit. The larger than life size figure is cast in Bronze and mounted on a grey granite base plinth which carries the combined services motif. The memorial was unveiled on Armistice Day

13 The Ancient Mariner Watchet, Somerset, England In 2002 I was commissioned to produce a largerthan-life-size bronze sculpture of Samuel Taylor Coleridge s Ancient Mariner for the Watchet Market House Museum in Somerset

14 Yankee Jack Watchet, Somerset, England This project followed on from the Ancient Mariner project at Watchet, Somerset, and forms part of West Somerset District Council s plans to enhance the esplanade. The life-size bronze figure is dedicated to the memory of John Short ( ), who was known as Yankee Jack

15 51st Highland Monument Bruar, Perth, Scotland On the 60th anniversary of D-Day, Brigadier Andrew Jackson unveiled this bronze statue at Breville, Normandy, France, on behalf of the WWII Veterans of the 51st Highland Division. To mark the demise of the Veterans Association and the laying up of the Regimental Standard at St. Johns in Perth, it was felt that a second cast should be taken and sited in Scotland. Clan Donnachaidh (Robertson) gifted the land upon which the memorial stands at the entrance to the House of Bruar, Perthshire. The 8 tonne granite base stone and inscription plaque was supplied by Glenrock of Aberdeen

16 51st Highland Monument Schijndel, Holland and Perth, Scotland This memorial was inspired by the liberation of Dutch towns by men of the 51st Highland Division and the subsequent liberation of the Brabant area. Commissioned by the Golden Pheasant Trust, the memorial now stands at the entrance to Schijndel, one of the first towns to be liberated. A second cast was taken and sited at the North Inch in Perth where it was unveiled on the 50th anniversary of VE Day

17 Bamse, Norwegian Sea Dog Montrose, Scotland and Honningsvag, North Cape, Norway In 2006, the Montrose Heritage Trust invited me to tender for the statue of Bamse, a St Bernard dog which was a celebrated Norwegian Navy mascot during World War II. I was awarded the commission, and in 2006 His Royal Highness The Duke of York, KG, KCVO unveiled the statue in Montrose in the presence of representatives from the Royal Norwegian Navy, the British Royal Navy and the Norwegian Consul. A second cast was taken of the statue of Bamse and erected in 2009 in Honningsvag, North Cape, Norway, Bamse s home town

18 Boer War Memorial Nuneaton and Bedworth, England This statue was commissioned by Nuneaton and Bedworth Council after the original statue was stolen. Working from four small photographs I was able to recreate this much-loved statue for the local residents. The site for the statue was close to a main road and was vulnerable to thieves with heavy lifting gear. A new site was chosen in the Public Park at the entrance to the town s Museum. The Statue was rededicated in November

19 Lord Elgin and Sir Archibald Ewing Freemasons Hall, Edinburgh Both portraits and the associated plaques (overleaf) were commissioned by the Grand Lodge of Scotland and were sited in the Freemasons Hall in Edinburgh

21 Wallace and Burns The Irvine Burns Club Wallace and Burns, The Wellwood Bronze, was commissioned by the Irvine Burns Club to commemorate the 250th birthday of Scotland s National Bard

22 Mary Queen of Scots Linlithgow Museum This statue was commissioned by the Linlithgow Heritage Trust which manages the Annet House Museum in Linlithgow. The statue is life size and is made from cold cast bronze. Mary is depicted with a merlin perched on her arm. The merlin was the traditional hunting bird of that time

23 Drummer Boy War Memorial Winchburgh, Scotland Commissioned by Winchburgh and Niddrie British Legion, this statue is a memorial to all the local people who gave their lives in conflicts from Waterloo to the Falklands. The base cairn was built by a local stone mason to my specifications and the statue occupies a prominent position on the village green

24 Army Piper Inchdrewer House, Redford, Edinburgh This statue of an Army Piper is dedicated to all Pipers who lost their lives in conflict. The statue forms the centrepiece of the new memorial garden in the grounds of the The Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming

25 Watson-Watt Memorial Brechin, Scotland Sir Robert Alexander Watson-Watt was the physicist who developed the radar location of aircraft in England. Born in Brechin, Angus, Scotland he was a direct descendant of James Watt, pioneer of the steam engine. Commissioned by the Watson-Watt Society, the statue is sited in Brechin s St. Ninian Square and was unveiled by HRH Princess Anne in September 2014 The statue shows Sir Robert demonstrating the principal of interception using a model of a radar tower and a Spitfire fighter plane. 26 Some Projects completed in the pipeline projects Wojtek, the Soldier Bear Edinburgh, Scotland and Warsaw, Poland A Memorial dedicated to the bravery of the Polish soldiers who fought with the allies throughout WWII and the remarkable bond they formed with a very special Syrian brown bear. The design for the memorial was decided in In May 2013 the Wojtek Trust was formed in order to raise the necessary funds for its creation. Planning permission was granted for the statue to be placed in Princes Street Gardens in the centre of the Scottish capital at the foot of Edinburgh Castle. Morris and Steadman, Architects, have designed the contemporary grey granite setting for the sculpture, which will feature a 4m bronze relief panel illustrating the bear s story

27 Projects in the pipeline St. Andrew Proposed siting in Freemason s Hall, George Street, Edinburgh 2015 The Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch Better known as The Skating Minister it was painted by Henry Raeburn and was almost unknown until its discovery in a private collection in It became one of Scotland s best-known paintings and is considered an icon of Scottish culture. The image is used by The National Gallery of Scotland to promote itself and is reproduced in print form and on gift products in the gallery shop. Surprisingly, there were no three dimensional representations of this painting. I decided to sculpt this small prototype figure for the approval of the National Gallery. The piece has great potential and it is hoped that a life-size version may be commissioned and sited within the gallery grounds, raising its profile even further
